Predictions: ATL Superbowl Weekend Upgauges

Mon Jan 21, 2019 6:35 am

I'm sure Delta will add additional flights from Boston and LAX, but what will American, and United add widebodies from LA, Boston to Atlanta for Superbowl Weekend.

I predict each team will have one season ticket holder wide body charter. I know the Patriots have done that in the past. Sadly that pretty much is the total tickets each fan group gets. Most of the Super Bowl tickets go corporate. There will be upgages also.

It looks like AA is running the three-class A321T LAX-ATL daily 2/1-2/4.

There are a number of people who go to the super bowl just to party and be a part of the atmosphere. and don’t attend the game itself. Not just from cities of the teams playing too.

I just pulled up AA’s flights from LAX-ATL and there are no extra flights loaded yet nor does it show the A321T.

UA is running a combo of 777-200s and 737s from both LAX and BOS. Both have up to 3 daily flights.

True, local paper is predicting upto 1 Million visitors to the city.

DL today added a couple of extra sections from BOS, LGA and LAX.

I know ticket brokers were not wanting pats vs rams. Said most Pats fans have already been recently so might not pony up the money again and the Rams don't have much of a fan base yet being newly back in LA. I saw DL was adding one to LAX and 2 or 3 to BOS.

Oddly enough WN is adding an extra STL-ATL flight.

Probably helps they have some flow on both ends. I doubt they can fill a plane with them but they can add connectors on both ends to fill the rest.

AA2573 all four days is showing as the 321T on AA.com and it also shows internally as the T. If you go to the seat map you can see it.

LGA is not a bad addition for the Patriots fans. Alot of patriots fans in Connecticut or even Western mass or southern Western VT who LGA is same distance or closer.

A321t out LAX for AA makes total sense. I don't see any issues with them filling those premium seats with ease.

The 321T always shows as a 32B "A321 with Sharklets". You have to go to the seat map to see that it is in fact a 321T.

Most of the people I know that have stuck with them are older (like my dad). There are definitely some around still. I would say it is a small minority though.

The Rams fly UA, so expect at least one more widebody for the team. I expect the organization will also have some type of UA plane/s also for them along with friends/family.

I would like to know what gates the 777’s are going to use, too. I don’t believe any of the non-Delta T gates will fit a 777.

A better question is how on earth all those people are gonna get through security on Feb 4th, with what's currently going on with the TSA.

Does UA only use the T gates at ATL? Can the T gates handle a T7 or do they need to use a different terminal which likely means a DL preferred gate?

If need be, there are also D gates that are "general use", or if needed, there are certainly gates out on E or F than can accommodate larger aircraft.

(domestic flights can certainly use E and F, they just tend to do so fairly seldomly)

usually not ... but in 2000 - the last time Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl - the city was digging out from a big ice storm

I lived there then ... I remember it well

In January 2000, two ice storms struck the Atlanta area within a week of each other. The second storm occurred during the week the Super Bowl was hosted.

If need be, there are also D gates that are "general use", or if needed, there are certainly gates out on E or F than can accommodate larger aircraft.

(domestic flights can certainly use E and F, they just tend to do so fairly seldomly)

Seems like D is mostly RJ and 737 sized gates. Can't imagine seeing a T7 there, much less packing the narrow concourse with a T7 full of people!

Delta uses E all the time for domestic and international. I've always wondered if DL "owns" E or not? I know F is 'general use'.
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

Where will they park? Can their gates on T accommodate a 777?

Concourse E is common use. More than likely United will use E or F. Their gates on T can't accommodate a plane as large as a 772 without some serious maneuvering and closing adjacent gates.

A better question is how on earth all those people are gonna get through security on Feb 4th, with what's currently going on with the TSA.

Busiest day at security in ATL I am aware of was Memorial Day 2018 with 93,000
Monday 2/4 is expected to have 115,000 pass through security. Even if they overestimate by 10% it will still be a single day record.

Hopefully UA already figured that out. Once E became the international terminal, ATL densified the gates on the AA/UA side of T from 6 gates to 9 gates since with no terminal space expansion on T. Of the UA gates, T13 looks like it has more space but not enough for a 777. T was used for overflow international departures, but only 767's until F was opened. And again, that was only on the DL side of T. Delta gate T2 definitely can handle a 777, and T3 can handle a 330, but I imagine they will be used heavily by the "hometown airline" although DL could trade a narrowbody operation at T2 to UA for one of UA's slots at T13-17.

Plenty of gates in E and F can handle the 777 as well as the mid-concourse gates on A, but those are prime real estate for DL even on slow days. DL notoriously refused to give up their A380 compatible gate on E to Qatar back in 2016. One would think they would not be as adversarial to UA.

So my bet is that they will find space on E if they don't do a deal with DL for T2

Well, fortunately, Atlanta doesn't ever experience temperatures in the upper -20s Fahrenheit so I think they'll be okay...

usually not ... but in 2000 - the last time Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl - the city was digging out from a big ice storm

I lived there then ... I remember it well

In January 2000, two ice storms struck the Atlanta area within a week of each other. The second storm occurred during the week the Super Bowl was hosted.

Same here, lived in Midtown Atlanta during that time. I remember how bummed out the partygoers in Buckhead were and how the folks who run the Super Bowl were peeved that ATL wasn't warm and inviting that time hehe :)

:checkmark: UA will use E concourse for the 772s. Don't forget the other carriers RON flights out of E concourse, and UA has flown widebody military charters out of E in the past, so not foreign to see this occurence.

AA gates will be full as well with added flights from JFK and LAX. It appears nothing larger then a A321 though.

In doing some dummy bookings with United, it looks like there is also a 757-300 paying us a visit on Friday
Careful, doors are closing, and will not reopen. Please wait for the next train.
