OAK Airport to Monterey

Sun Jan 27, 2019 3:46 pm

Hi....hoping SFO Bay locals can assist me here....I have a single lady client going at short notice LGW-OAK on DI due to a friend passing away in Monterey. I appreciate SJC would have been nearer but BA is twice the fare !
Can anyway recommend best way from / to OAK to a private address in Monterey ? And approx. cost if possible.
Many thanks

Well, yes, you or I would, but this is a lady in her 60's here and unfamiliar with CA.
Unless you want to make a few $$ and meet & greet and take her down to Monterey and back !!

Oakland to MRY is not easy. A few options...

If cost is the greatest concern, the Monterey Salinas Airbus goes from SFO and SJC to downtown Monterey. Fare is $52 each way.

https://www.montereyairbus.com/rates

So she could take BART from OAK to SFO and then the Airbus to downtown Monterey. From there, Uber or a taxi both of which are readily available. That is really ugly from a time perspective - probably 4 hours in all and probably costs on the order of $80 total.

A one way car rental is about $100 - $125 with the drop fee. If you dig around, some car rental agencies will not have a drop fee on this route depending on the day and if they need to move cars from the Bay Area back to MRY. If that is case, it will probably be around $50 plus gas

Good luck

its not going to work in an easy or cheap manner. In her situation I would recommend fly directly into MRY via connection rather than all that mucking about in the Bay Area.

I agree there's a choice between convenience and price. For ease, as much as that's possible, you could fly United Express from San Francisco to Monterey. This still leaves you to get from Oakland to San Francisco, in which case perhaps you'd better have booked Norwegian to Los Angeles instead of Oakland. United Express also flies to Monterey from Los Angeles. However those flights, as short as they are, are expensive.

The cheapest option might perhaps be to book Norwegian to Las Vegas and self-transfer there to Allegiant, who flies from Las Vegas to Monterey.

Thank you for your responses. She's booked for OAK now. I believe it's around an hour and three quarters by road. That'll be what, a $200 cab ride ?

Could take BART to Warm Springs ($11.15) then Uber/cab from there. UberX estimate right now is $106 Warm Springs to Monterey. Not quick or cheap though.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight train stops at the the Oakland Coliseum station if I remember correctly. While the train doesn't serve Monterey directly, I believe Amtrak runs a bus service to Monterey from nearby Salinas. Amtrak's website seems to be having problems right now, so I can't tell you what the fare would be or confirm that information. Unfortunately that train only comes through once a day, stopping in Oakland around mid morning, so the timings might not work out for her. But in theory I think it's possible to take the people mover from OAK to the Oakland Coliseum station (which is served by both BART and Amtrak), then take the train to Salinas and connect to the bus to Monterey.

Or, this might actually be easier -- It looks like there's a Greyhound bus from Oakland to Monterey. Take a taxi/Uber/Lyft to the Oakland bus station, bus to Monterey, then another taxi/Uber/Lyft to her final destination. The bus fare looks like it would be around $28-$34 depending on the day.

Most of these suggestions would work for a 20 year old but for a single lady in her 60s traveling by herself in a foreign land picking up an Uber/Lyft ride at OAK and going straight to the residence in Monterey would be the best and least stressful option. No t the cheapest option but it would be money well spent.

I agree with this. Younger people would be willing to sort something out through BART or, shudder, Greyhound, but from what we know about this woman, I'd say it's probably worth the convenience to just pay for a cab/Uber/Lyft. Even trying to get from OAK to SFO by ground and then waiting around for SFO-MRY on a separate ticket would probably be a waste of time.

Greyhound/Amtrak isn't going to work. DY get's in around 4pm and the trains/buses leave in the morning. Uber/lyft/cab is the best bet for that time of evening. It'll probably cost a bit but the convenience is worth it.

One option that hasn't been mentioned is taking the Amtrak Capital Corridor down to San Jose and then catching the Caltrain extension down to Gilroy. That'd get the person down to Gilroy at 8 and the uber would be much shorter from there. It's a pain, but it's another option.

Man, that arrival time makes it really tough because it'd be rush hour and that would hit you just about any route you take. That said, that's not too pleasant of a drive for someone who doesn't know the area - again, almost any route you take. Agree that for the situation proposed, Uber/Lyft is probably the right call.

I'd expect more like 2 to 2.5 hours at that time of day, and it would be way, way more than $200 in a cab. Cabs in the Bay Area are not cheap. Definitely use Uber or Lyft.
