AA ranked last or next to last for 10 years in WSJ Airline rankings.

Mon Jan 28, 2019 7:54 pm

WSJ has released its annual airline rankings. Delta is the winner. Frontier is looser. Special recognition goes to American for being last or next to last consistently for the last 10 years.

AA should be credited for consistency. And its so stubborn in its place that US Airways merger couldn't make a difference.

AA is my first preference to travel out of DFW. But after reading this article, I am convinced that budget airlines not only have cheaper fares but also perform better.

Overall Score rankings can be found below, although of note is that in the main article there are scores for various categories.

This is what happens when you have a bi-polar airline one trying to be the best while at the same time trying to be a ulcc

I must be low-maintenance. The #7 airline has never done me wrong. Neither has #1. So be it.

The rankings reflect my experiences over the last 10 years as well.

I think the most interesting thing here is Spirit at #4...?!

Strictly anecdotal evidence but the 1h 15m I spend on Delta's MD88 beat 25 minutes on AA's lUS A319 by a long shot, comfort wise.

How did JetBlue rank lower than Spirit. I'm impressed how NK is climbing. Where is Allegiant?

I'm betting Alaska could retake #1

AA being so low... My flights on them have been excellent. DL does better, usually, but not always.

I cannot wait to get vaccinated to live again! Warning: I simulated that it takes 50%+ vaccinated to protect the vaccinated and 75%+ vaccinated to protect the vac-hesitant.

Definitely not an AA nut here (more of a B6 Nut), but a reminder that before AA merged with US, they announced a very large set of PAX ex upgrades to there service. These included AVOD at every seat etc... These were later scrapped by the US management.

They don't take account many important things such as (product, cost, baggage $$, lounges, etc...).

If that counted I would say the ranking would be
1. Delta
2. United
3. Jetblue.
4.American or Southwest
6. Frontier
7. Spirit

It’s been excruciatingly obvious that AA’s management has driven customer satisfaction into the ground. Yanking TVs out of their aircraft, reducing seat pitch while increasing airfare and devaluing FF miles has done nothing for me but turn me off from what used to be my favorite carrier. I’ve had much more phenomenal experiences with Frontier Airlines over the past year than American, and Frontier only charges a fraction of the price that AA charges, even with the add-ons.

It’s such a shame to see that the ULCCs and LCCs have posted better customer satisfaction scores than AA which used to be great and fun to fly with. Now they’re just overpriced Frontier, just with streaming entertainment.

I'm not clear on why Allegiant was not included. Agree that Alaska vs. Delta will continue to be a good one to watch. Delta has been narrowing that gap with J.D. Power and this is a good opportunity year for Alaska to make a statement that the VA acquisition is done and dusted.

I haven't ever flown AA but I can't see how they could fall below Spirit. Are they really that bad?

I think it's different expectations. People expect Spirit to be a no-frills airline and aren't surprised at extra fees, bare bones product, etc. On the other hand, people assume AA offers more since it is a "major" airline with higher fares, but are disappointed when they find out AA has pretty much the same fees, service, and onboard product as Spirit.

I don't really get how they reached the conclusion to drop United by two spots 2017 > 2018

By all accounts, their product has been steadily improving since ~2014, at the very least since the introduction of Polaris?

Does anyone know exactly how the ranking was done? What's been taken into account?
The article not being accessible, it's pretty much impossible to understand and comment the ranking.

The question is what are the parameters and what does a 200K mile a year road warrior value compared to someone that takes 2 trips a year.

Can anyone who daily observes the airline industry doubt that AA has been struggling for years?

One wonders how long the BOD will continue to allow the current management team to mismanage this great airline.
