Complete lack of judgement by management. Someone’s head should roll.

But the napkins have Coke branding
Aren't they to blame?

Someone who replied to one of those tweets said it best, this new world of fear and hatred of strangers is creepy.

I wouldn't go that far calling it creepy or harrassing, it's just bad taste and poor judgement. A plane is not a pool party.

Sure, they're a little bit cringey but I wouldn't call them offensive or creepy. It really is kind of sad that in this day and age approaching somebody is generally frowned upon and in some cases is even considered a form of harassment, even if it's friendly and well intentioned.

How horrible that such napkins would create such a distraction from me being able to message dudes on my phone and send pictures back and forth of our potty areas.

It's a dumb suggestion on a napkin. "Heads should roll"? Sheesh. Lighten up.

DL apologizes and pulls “creepy” napkins with Coke ad

DL’s current soft drink napkins feature an ad for Diet Coke encouraging “to be a little old school, write down your number & give it to your plane crush, you never know.” The napkin has a spot to put your name and phone number.

Appearently, numerous passengers were creeped by the concept and complained to DL, resulting in the airline issuing an applogy and pulling the napkins...

What idiots. How can major corporations be so clueless? They think it's 'cute' and they got their buzz from it...but certainly not what they expected.

The only 'idiots' are the perpetually offended who complained.

what proof is there that 'numerous' passengers complained? Probably just a handful of people who are always 'offended' by everything.

Maybe I am "old school", but I see little wrong with this.

You don't wan't the person's number, you throw it out ... like I did 40 years ago!

On the other had, it is a nice ice breaker and apart from the usual "offended snowflakes" would just cause a chuckle. I see it far safer than what is possible with today's means of communication and stalking capabilities.

I'm not sure how this is at all different from VX's seat to seat messaging system (that's still active on the now AS birds) that had marketing around it that I recall was very much in the same vein as this.

To be clear, I also do think the people complaining are just being a bit sensitive.

However, messages and actions like this have no place in the corporate world. It certainly isn't going to help their overall brand image. Not that Coca-Cola needs to keep their brand image 100% on par with societal standards--they're a large company/organization and can deal with a little controversy like this every once in awhile and not lose a buck, but I can definitely see why people would get offended by stuff like this. For a large company/organization to act like this and to send that kind of message to people is just a bit out of place, IMHO.

I guess I could see how this could spawn some awkward (and possibly unwanted) interactions with your fellow passenger. It's a touch weird from a corporate level. I'd stick with plain napkins and allow passengers to talk among themselves.

seems that showing interest in someone is now a thought crime. Glad I got all that silly business out of the way decades ago, however. No harm , no foul. I would be complimented if someone sent me a filled out napkin nowadays.

Tinder=classy. Napkin=creepy. If they had done the same thing with a URL that also collected your personal information it would be "so cool".

When will people respect my being offended at their being so hair-triggered offended? Why are they so quick to invalidate MY feelings?

In pre-social media days, people would rightly not given two poops about this kind of thing. Now, "it's blowing up Twitter" or some other already overdone meme.

You would only find it creepy if you are a creep yourself. I think it quite a nice message. I had amazing conversations on planes. I mean these days everyone just stares into their phone and IFE. I miss the times were planes were full of chatter and laughter.

Shouldn't be unless a caterer made a mistake. The current AA napkins have a Dasani Sparkling Water w/Lime ad on them to encourage people to choose a healthier option (accompanied by a drawer full of them in every galley). The old AA napkins didn't have this slogan on it.

Seriously, if I were handed a number, I'd be flattered. If I hand my number to someone and they aren't flattered, I'll start with snowflake... ;)

As noted, safe but fun.

Really??? I don't understand why you feel like this is clueless. Before social media and smart phones, people use to interact with each other, people use to talk to each other. When you met someone you thought was interesting or you had an interest in you asked for their name and phone number. In some cases you where turned down to your face in other cases the person surprised you and gave you their number. There were times when you would get a call back and then there were plenty of times your number ended up in the trash.

Neither Delta or Coke a Cola should have apologized for these napkins there is nothing creepy or offensive about them. To those who do find them offensive its just a napkin wipe your face and your hands thrown it in the trash and be done with it no one is forcing you to write your name or number on them.

It's situations like this that highlight the problems with social media, companies are forced to apologize when they've done nothing wrong. Also a few people on social media does not represent all of America.

Because it's Delta everyone thinks its fine! Hahaha!. This is just not appropriate for Americans. Brits, Italians, Spanish, Latin American countries which are more flirtatious regions and not uptight then yeah, it could work. The USA is too PC!!

Delta continues to raid Virgin's vaults for "saucy" "flirtatious" OLD ideas, can't say I blame them.....but they have to also get that Americans are not ummm, well it does not work here in the USA.

A few million $ in free positive press for DL.

Really!? Some people have way too much time on their hands. Even taking the time to complain about something like this is a total waste of everyone's time.

Actually, I find Delta at fault for even apologizing. There is absolutely nothing to apologize for. All it does is allow more people to believe that Delta is in the wrong. That is the only thing that is wrong with this issue. They could have simply removed the napkins from their service, and said nothing. Often, the more you say the more wrong you appear.

Much ado about nothing. If you want to get offended, get offended at important things like politicians wasting taxpayers money or excessive healthcare costs. A napkin that played on the old trope of people flirting on a plane is NOTHING TO BE OFFENDED ABOUT!

You're not obligated to do anything if you receive that napkin with a phone number attached, nor are you obligated to even fill the damn thing up or use the napkin in any other way besides to wipe off whatever needs wiping!

This is well said and likely the cause of the "offense" taken.

Taking note of your sarcasm, (I hope most did see that), there are some individuals that will never see a phone number on a napkin! They will be the loudest crying "offense".

I like the napkins. They're cheesy, but they do make a point....Since when did showing interest towards somebody in person become such a bad thing?

Agree with this totally. Maybe it wasn’t the best choice in the world, but do people have to make a big drama over everything? You can’t even say “boo” anymore because it might offend someone.

I suppose I should quit trying to date the old fashioned way and register for a Tinder where I can be judged based solely on my looks. Hell, maybe I should ask my Pakistani grandparents to find me someone I can arrange a marriage with, at the rate Western society is going there is going to be no difference in how we choose partners. There is NOTHING, creepy about making a romantic gesture to someone else. It is creepy when you refuse to take no for an answer, or try to harm the person who rejected you. I agree that peoples fear of strangers is very very concerning to me. If I was in charge at Delta I would have refused to apologize.

I don't use the word snowflake because it associates me with people who think that being offended at calls for genocide or racial slurs is "being too sensitive", (And also because it attaches a negative connotation to the word snow, and I love snow) but I believe people are discussing anyone who found these napkins offensive.

I'm not real interested in getting into this debate, but I'll note two things: 1) "creepy" and "offensive" are not the same thing; 2) I'm willing to bet a seriously good dinner or three that female input into this thread is minimal if not zero, and far more women found the napkins creepy than men did.

If you want to talk up someone on an airplane, do it. Don't spend an hour staring at her (or him) and then send a napkin with your phone number on it. That's creepy.
