Alaska Airlines Now Selling Long Haul Tickets To Australia

Mon Feb 11, 2019 7:29 pm

Very surprising undertaking. This is the first time Alaska Airlines has ever embarked on the long-haul ticket selling venture.

https://airwaysmag.com/airlines/alaska- ... australia/

The airline will put its AS code on flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Brisbane (BNE) and Melbourne (MEL), San Francisco (SFO) to Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne, as well as from Sydney to Honolulu (HNL).

This same model could be replicated with other long-haul partners, opening up Alaska's market reach by endless possibilities.

Way to go!

Does Alaska not already do this with other long-haul partner airlines?

They have mileage accrual and redemption agreements with long-haul partners and long-haul partners place code on AS' network, but this is the first time AS is placing their code on long-haul international partner flights.

Negative. This is the first "long haul" flight that Alaska will sell through its website/ticket offices.

This does look like a first step into the alliance arena. Once AS works out any issues, I expect we will see the same for CX, JL, and BA eventually.

It appears the fares are different than what’s offered on Qantas. So for the time being there isn’t real incentive to book with Alaska.

How many daily flights does QF have from LAX to Australia and from SFO to Australia? Do they only fly to SYD, BNE, and MEL? What about SFO?

All hints for this go to QF eventually flying into SEA sometime.

Perhaps JL, CX and BA not too far behind especially at SEA.

These connections are already available for sale through 3rd parties or even the long-haul carriers themselves. The news would be for Alaska website to sell above listed possibilities. Personally, I would prefer the long haul carrier to handle/manage my booking rather than the short-haul connector.
