How to find tail number from old flight

Tue Feb 19, 2019 9:44 am

I’m looking to find tail numbers of flights I’ve flown on in the past (2012) and was only able to find one on an ACARS report.

I’m looking for:

Alaska Airlines ASA156 ANC-LAX 6/11/2012 landed 6/12
JetBlue JBU500 LGB-ANC 6/18/2012 landed 6/19
Alaska Airlines ASA088 ANC-SEA 9/22/2012
Alaska Airlines ASA101 SEA-ANC 9/26/2012 (ACARS shows N323AS, want to double check)

Thanks!

For these here: https://www.transtats.bts.gov/ONTIME/

Only for domestic USA flights. Others have to come from other sources such as ACARS.

How did you get a hold of an ACARS report? A quick google search led to https://www.acarsd.org/, but I'm not sure how comprehensive it is.

I've found this site easier to use than others: https://wandr.me/bts/

Although if you get into older data, it sometimes mixes the fleet number in instead of the actual tail number, which can be a little misleading. For instance I've found older AA 752 flights that show numbers like N532UW, which would now be a LUS Airbus flying for AA, but at the time was fleet number 532 (a now-retired 752 frame). Some MD-80 regs like N7514A also don't show up properly, they might show as N514AA which either doesn't exist or is the wrong type. WN records can sometimes be a little funky as well.

I've also occasionally seen flight numbers that don't match up with my travel records, even though they are at the correct departure time.

Finally, it does not provide international data (I even signed up at one point for the 'premium' subscription which supposedly does, but couldn't get any results), and it also seems to be missing a fair amount of regional carrier flights that I have in my logs.

Despite these issues, it's a pretty easy to use interface that has enabled me to find out a ton of registrations that I failed to note back in the day.

https://www.transtats.bts.gov/ONTIME/Departures.aspx

Choose the operating airline, departing airport and date of the flight you're looking for and then look for your flight # in the list that appears.

And what about European flight.
I found the site planefinder, which is great but with quite a big number of flights that has been never recorded. Moreover you can't playback earlier than 2012 or something like that. Does someone has another way to found past flight data in Europe?

Greetings!
So I have a question, is there is anywhere to see Mesaba (XJ) flights. It appears there aren't any in the database. I'm trying to see what type of plane flew MSP to CMX in August 1997. I don't necessarily need the tail numbers. Thanks!

Best I could find is an old Northwest schedule which shows it as a SF3 (Saab 340B) in 2000. There is a gap of some years in the 1990's for these schedules.

I've never been able to find UA1101 on June 27, 2008 and TP173 on Sept 5, 2008. If anyone can help me with either of those, it would be much appreciated...

I can easily find domestic flights using the provided links, but nothing I've tried for international flights has worked. I'm looking into custom reports (https://flightaware.com/commercial/customreports) to try and get ahold of registration numbers for my past international flights.

ACARS in very good for most years. Also if any flights depart/arrive LHR/LGW it’s (www.lhr-lgw.co.uk) almost comprehensive back to the 1950s in some cases. There are more ACARS linked through that but would have to be a flight that overflow the UK. So can do quite well on Europe-USA flights.

I had a quick look but appears to have been operated by US Express (aka Regional). This means you would have to select the regional airline as the operator and not US Airways. I had a quick look and could find it. Are you sure flight number is correct? Also do you know the aircraft type as that could narrow the options down easier?

Thank you so much for both! How did you find those?

Also...I don't know what I'm missing, but I can't get the LHR/LGW database to work. I downloaded the zip files from the archives and there seem to be multiple directories, each of which seem to have multiple days. I open the files but they only seem to have either nothing or a couple flights in them. Is there any viewer I should be using for the files?

Right, just a year of data for a given flight number or registration can be upwards of $400. I'm hoping that for just a handful of flights it'll be more manageable. I'll certainly let everyone know how much it is when I find out.

The flights I know for sure are:
LH427 PHL-FRA A343 March 15 2013
LH310 FRA-FLR E190/5 March 16 2013
LH311 FLR-FRA E190/5 March 24 2013
LH426 FRA-PHL A343 March 24 2013

US532 PHX-SJD A321 March 15 2014
US533 SJD-PHX A321 March 23 2014

Still trying to figure out some itineraries from the early 2000s when I was only 5-10 years old. Would a CLT-SJU flight be included in domestic databases?

Hi I to have been in the same situation for many years, the only flights I haven't been able to find out of the 50+ since i started logging were

AF flight #321 on August 26th 2009, BOS-CDG operated by an A340-300 (looking for a tail number)
AZ CDG-FCO on August 27th 2009 codeshared Flight #AF9834 operated with a A319 leaving CDG around 2pm (looking for a tail number)
AZ FCO-CDG on September 5th 2009 codeshared Flight #AF9833 operated with a A321, departing around 7am(looking for a tail number)

If you have away of finding this it would be greatly appreciated!

Can someone help me with these? Tail numbers and flights, please!!!

ATL-FOR on July 15th, 2009. It was a Delta Boeing 767-300ER.
ATL-DCA on July 03rd, 2009. Delta Connection-Shuttle America E175 N206JQ (I just need the flight number)
LGA-MDW on July 10th, 2009. Delta Connection-Shuttle America E175 N202JQ (I just need the flight number)
BCN-AMS on July 08th, 2011. Vueling A320-200. (It was a morning flight)

This might be the most difficult one:

EZE-SCL on July 04th, 2003, on a Varig MD-11.

Thanks for checking! It is the only gap I have in my log and is really annoying. I've checked under Mesa and Skywest with no luck. I pulled up my itinerary from US Airways and it says it was operated by Mesa. Flight # and time are correct and it was a CRJ900.

Do I need a special type of software to run ACARS and find data? The best I could do was get a big block of text.

An important thing to note for anyone using the ACARS Decoder: "Since January 2006, we create daily ACARS reports which can be downloaded from this server. Because of different timezones, the reports are 2 days back. With this limit we can include all messages from the same day.
The ACARS reports are in zip or plain text format."

Also, does anyone know why random ACARS reports are missing here and there, including all reports from 2009?

Yes, it’s domestic and I’ve searched for SJU flights many times with no issues.

And TP173 (LIS-BSB) is CS-TOM (A330-200).

Those two on ACARS.

As for LHR/LGW you get the zip file and then they often have a couple in there, one is most airlines, a “ba” prefix is often just BA seperate and also a “biz” sometimes and that is private aircraft. Sometime the one with all is called “rest”. A bit of guesswork and searching. Some do only have a couple flights but the more recent ones have hundreds each day. Basically the older you go the harder it is. Try a date to more recent to make sure it works but no real trick other than unzip the files.

Oh man I owe you beverages :-) Thanks! I've got to figure out how to use ACARS I guess - so far my efforts have not been successful. I figured the Gulf legs had to be either LB or LF since they seemed to be the only ones left in the old livery on those dates, but I couldn't be sure.

In case anyone is feeling generous, I've been looking for the registrations of LH940 on Aug 23, 2013 (I think it was a 733), and LH947 on Aug 25, 2013 (probably a 321), respectively. Those were the first flights I took by myself, but failed to keep track of the registrations.

Cheers!

Hi, I'm also having trouble finding a few old flights on the online ACARS database. Does anyone know of another way to find info about these? Apologies for the large number of flights, and any missing data, but any help will be welcome.

Listed from oldest to newest:
2008-10-20 or 21 PEK to HKG on CX
2008-10-21 HKG to MEL on CX
2010-04-08 MEL to OOL on DJ745 Boeing 737-800 (should be at least)
2011-06-19 BNE to CAN on CZ382 Airbus A330
2011-06-19 CAN to PEK on CZ, don't know flight no, but should be an evening/night flight
2011-07-06 KHN to PEK, don't know flight no, but should be an midday/afternoon flight
2013-03-21 BNE to CAN on CZ382 Airbus A330, should be a -300
2013-03-21 CAN to PEK on CZ3000 I think, I know the plane was an Airbus A380
2013-04-16 PEK to CAN on CZ, should be a morning flight
2013-04-16 CAN to BNE on CZ381 Airbus A330
2014-06-28 BNE to SIN on SQ236 Boeing 777-200
2014-06-28 SIN to FRA on SQ26
2014-07-16 SIN to BNE on SQ235 Boeing 777-200
2015-08-31 CAN to PEK on CZ3101? Boeing 777-300ER
2016-06-18 BNE to SIN on SQ246 Airbus A330
2016-07-03 CDG to SIN on SQ335 Airbus A380

Thank you so much Martijn! But I actually found out it was EC-JTQ because I have a pic of EC-HQL... taken onboard my Vueling flight!
Turns out EC-HQL was right beside my gate. Anyway, many thanks!

Can anyone help me find the registrations for the following Western Airlines flights back in June of 1981?

WA #561, LAX - HNL 06/16/1981
WA #564, HNL - LAX 06/23/1981

I've been trying to get the registrations for these first two flights I'd been on for years now. Many thanks!

I started collecting flight info back in 2007, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find some details from before that time. I tried finding the info a while ago when there was a similar topic as this, but I wasn't able to. I would be eternally grateful if somebody is able to find some of my missing data:

UAL4670 - oct 12 2013 - IAH > MSY - 16:18-17:05. Missing: airplane reg
KL1578 - aug 25 2006 - ATH > AMS - 17:20-19:55. Missing: airplane reg
SK1549 - jul 28 2006 - CPH > AMS - 14:55-16:20. Missing: airplane reg + type (I think MD82)
SK0556 - jul 25 2006 - AMS > ARN - 10:30-12:30. Missing: airplane reg
EZY2165 - aug 12 2005 - LTN > AMS - 19:20-31:30. Missing: airplane reg
EZY2316 - aug 10 2005 - CAG > LTN - 16:50-18:30. Missing: airplane reg
EZY2315 - aug 02 2005 - LTN > CAG - 12:40-16:20. Missing: airplane reg
EZY2156 - aug 02 2005 - AMS > LTN - 08:35-08:45. Missing: airplane reg
DL???? - jan 05 2005 - ATL > AMS - 17:40-08:10+1. Missing: airplane reg + type + flightnumber
DL???? - jan 05 2005 - LIM > ATL - 01:10-07:55. Missing: airplane reg + type + flightnumber
DL???? - dec 11 2004 - ATL > LIM - 16:30-24:10. Missing: airplane reg + type + flightnumber
DL???? - dec 11 2004 - AMS > ATL - 10:10-14:00. Missing: airplane reg + type + flightnumber

Cheers!
