Smallest airports with TATL service

Thu Feb 21, 2019 7:03 pm

I was wondering, what are the smallest airports (by pax numbers) on both sides of the pond that have regular scheduled TATL service. On what airlines and why did those airlines pick those airports for TATL?

Starting in May, TUI Airways UK will start flights between Doncaster-Sheffield and Orlando-Sanford. Doncaster-Sheffield only sees about 1.2 million passengers per year.

I would have to put SWF near the top of that list, but I do not have any data to back that up...

Just found an even smaller one. LOT Polish Airlines flies between Rzeszów and Newark. In 2017 Rzeszów didn't even reach 700.000 passengers a year.

Whitehorse (YXY) saw 366,000 passengers in 2017 and enjoys seasonal DE service to Frankfurt

YYT sees about 1.5 million a year. I doubt that you'll find a smaller airport with year-round TATL service.

Halifax YHZ...pop 400,000 and 4 million pass/year has year round service to LHR on AC. In summer there's also KEF on Icelandair, FRA on Condor and CDG, DUB, LGW and GLA on WestJet.

S4 flies from TER to BOS and seasonal to YYZ and OAK. Service to OAK is impressive out of this tiny island airport with less than 700k pax.

This is a stretch on several accounts, but what about Saint-Pierre in Canada (LFVP)? Sure it's technically a domestic flight inside France, and it's only seasonal, but it's a scheduled flight that does cross the Atlantic. Air Saint-Pierre goes from the island to CDG. Can't do numbers that high considering there's only 6,000 people on the islands.

What do they use on that route? By all accounts I can see they only have one ATR-42.

OK, why does the 8th-busiest airport in Poland have TATL service? The only other connection LOT offers is to Tel Aviv from this airport, aside from Warsaw.

...really? The city has a population of less than 200,000 inhabitants. The whole province has a population of only 2,000,000. The one province to the west has Krakow (KRK), a substantially larger airport and tourist destination city with its own nonstop to ORD. I feel like there has to be more to the story, otherwise you would expect substantially larger areas than Rzeszów to have nonstop flights to the US all over Europe for the same reason. Like why not simply KRK-EWR, for that matter?

They’ve done KRK-NYC, but the VFR traffic ex-KRK is much more Chicago-centric. It’s really no different from something like the US-Mexico VFR market, where different markets have vastly different demand patterns to Mexico.

Thanks everybody for the input so far.

I'm really curious for the reasons behind these flights. Why is BY flying DSA-SFB? How does S4 make TER-YYZ and TER-OAK work? Why do they fly there from TER instead of PDL? Very interesting to learn about the RZE-EWR flight.

Any more small airports with TATL service?

It seems like an odd connection but here several reasons behind this one weekly service.

1. Large ethnic Polish population in New York
2. Around 32.000 pax travel from Podkarpackie Voivodeship to NYC each year
3. Business demand from Aviation Valley in which many aviation companies are based
4. Cargo demand on this route is substantial too

Starting June this year Air Europa will fly between Madrid and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina. Puerto Iguazú handles less than 900.000 passengers a year. However this is a triangle flight that also stops in Montevideo after Puerto Iguazú. Not that Montevideo is exactly a big airport, but way bigger than Puerto Iguazú.

Two airports in Greenland see scheduled transatlantic flights from Copenhagen on Air Greenland: Kangerlussuaq SFJ year round and almost daily, sometimes even 2x per day with an A330, and Narsarsuaq UAK in summer by a wetlease, often a Jettime B737.

TUI (BY) are flying seasonal DSA to SFB on behalf of it's parent company TUI Holidays, it's not a scheduled flight but a package flight/charter flight taking British tourists to Florida similar to their other long haul flights from BHX, BRS, GLA, MAN, etc.

TUI has many European subsidiaries that fly transatlantic such as their operations from AMS.

The demand comes from TUI holidays and not down to local demand as in the case of DSA to SFB.

I've got to believe that Ponta delgado in the Azores would rank up there. I think there's a daily flight to JFK with Delta and to Boston and Toronto with Air Azores.
As of Dec 2019 I've flown 457,440 miles on 270 flights on 54 airplane types with 60 airlines traveling thru 104 airports. I've visited 60 countries.

Answered in Post #12 above....

Flight PJ637/PJ638 between St Pierre and CDG is operated by an ASL Airlines 737-7. It’s a summer seasonal service….and the second year it has operated. The rest of the year the ATR will get you to St. John’s, Halifax or Montreal where you can connect to TATL flights.

I'm surprised no one has brought up CHS, Charleston, South Carolina. It handles about 4.5 million passengers/year, but doesn't even have service to Canada or Mexico. Yet British Airways will begin flying it from LHR this summer.
