Edinburgh- Johannesburg, airline suggestions please

Wed Feb 27, 2019 2:09 am

I intend to fly this route for the 4th time now. Most flights will involve transfer at London or the middle east. I have flown on Emirates, Qatar and Rwandair and was wondering if people have a carrier whose service they liked on this route. I have been on the 787, 777, a380 (emirates) and airbus a330. My fading dream is to fly on a 747 or the new a350. Does any airline fly these to Jo'burg? If not any good recommendations on a good airline?

Thanks
I dream of owning a Zenithair 801

I believe LH flies the 748 on FRA-JNB
Next flight: November 23 BA216 IAD-LHR A388
November 24 BA814 LHR-CPH A320

I believe KLM still flies the 747-400 to Johannesburg which would also be an excellent choice.

Isn't QATAR flying the A350 to EDI and from April BA the B747 to JNB?!

No, they fly 777-200/300ER on AMS-JNB

For 747, it would have to be either 747-8i of LH on FRA-JNB or for southern Winter season BA on LHR-JNB with the 2nd daily flight...or to be sure you can do LHR-CPT.

For A350, out of that direction the only option could possibly be with Ethiopian on ADD-JNB, maybe then ET from MAN or LHR...or if you have QR to DOH on A350 from somewhere, they use 777-300ER on DOH-JNB, but A350 on DOH-CPT

For a slightly out of the box idea to get the 747; EDI-AMS-NBO-JNB. KLM AMS-NBO is usually a 747.

I quite like SAA, but they won't take care of your 747 or A350 fancy. However they've got decent connectivity throughout Europe via Frankfurt, Munich, & London. You can even catch a disappearing bird in the A346.

Except for the KQ codeshare which is on a 788.

I agree KL would be my airline of choice. Not your preferred aircraft, but the best quality. LH is also a good choice.

So is BA stopping using the A380 on the JNB route?

I mostly use SkyScanner to search for the cheapest options. They compare a lot of resources including booking sites, online travel agencies and directly with the airline. Never book through a traditional (offline) travel agency, they ask commissions which only makes your ticket more expensive.

Mostly (but not always) booking directly with the airline is the cheapest.

Beware of skyscanner! They offer "great" deals from dubious OTAs like like GoToGate, eDreams, etc. They are cheap, with no aftersales support.

That's because aftersales support makes it expensive. And if you don't need it, why would you pay for it?

Ended up booking with Turkish Airlines. Its going to be my first time flying them. Nearly booked with BA before realising that the "cheap fare" I was getting was for cabin luggage only. Turkish was cheapest at £409 return. I guess the lesson is to always book months in advance but in this car I had no choice as its a bit urgent

That hardly seems super expensive, so you're fine.

TK will be receiving A350s in the next couple of years, at which point perhaps you can try one of them.

last time I connected in Munich the evening LH flight to JNB was operated with an A359.
I'd rather fly on the B748 or in the A346... SAA also flies the A346 to FRA - in MUC I've seen the A333 in latter times.

LH dont fly this route, MUC-JNB, only SAA...LH do however fly A359 on the seasonal MUC-CPT route

No, just in Northern Summer season the 2nd daily flight is operated by 744, 1st daily flight remains A380...in Winter season it's double daily A380.
The other 4 weekly flights on the route currently operated with 787-8 will also switch to 787-9.
BA operates 18 flights weekly on LHR-JNB

I stand corrected.
It was to CPT.

Sounds like a great trip.

That said, I REALLY wish people would include what class of service they intend to fly in the initial post. It would be so helpful when offering relevant responses!
