Is the 747 completely gone from your home airport?

Thu Feb 28, 2019 4:49 pm

Now that the 747 is becoming more rare at some airports on which they were majority in the past, what's the current status of it around you?

If they are completely gone, since when? Which aircraft has replaced it? Are you able to list all airlines that used to operate it but no more?
I'm referring regular scheduled pax service, not cargo or charters.

Just curious about spotters/enthusiasts feeling about missing the big boy.

Boeing is making new 747's and selling them at $350 million each. These giants rules the skies. it will take 40 to 50 years more for China to make airplanes as large as Boeing 747s

LY formerly used a B744 on TLV-WAW during the busy summer months in the early 2000s. The route is operated by a 737-900 now.

BOS gets a 744 from BA and one from LH (although it sometimes is a 748).

My home airport is LAX. I think I'm safe for a bit to see 747s.

Although, it seems as if more A380s fly there... Anyone have numbers?

It's almost gone from ARN. The last regular operator was Thai, but they now use 777s instead. Although they used a 747 to ARN recently, and we still see the odd cargo 747 from Korean, as well as occasional charters.

EWR is my home airport, Currently the only passenger 747 is Lufthansa's 747-8. EWR is home for the 767,777, and 787 with a speck of A350 LOL.

KEF has obviously never seen 747s in regular scheduled service, but we used to get regular sun charters on the Air Atlanta classic 747s in the early 2000s. Now all we get is the odd diversion.

DTW is now void of all 747 service. Detroit has had a rich history as far as the 747 goes seeing scheduled flights from AA, BA, CV, DL, FT, LH, KL, NW, PA, SN, and UA over the years.

My former "home" airport, HKG, still see a few CI 744 (to TPE), LH 748 seasonally, along with KE 748s and OZ 744s once every so often. Of course, CX Cargo has a large fleet of 747Fs, so whenever I'm in HKG I should still see plenty of those. It's still a far cry from the old days when CX operates a tons of 747s, and all those regional trunk routes (HKG-TYO, HKG-SIN, HKG-BKK, etc.) along with every single North American route (i.e. AC/UA/NW) being on 747s.

Not my home airport, but IIRC there are no more pax 747 going into SIN. There are still plenty of 744Fs and 748Fs, though. The pax 747 are replaced by either 77W (Like most places) or 388 (for routes that require the capacity).

My home airport is SMF, which obviously never had the 747 in regular passenger service either. Maybe the odd cargo flight, but I'm not sure. But I think even on the cargo front the biggest SMF ever sees regularly is FedEx MD-11s.

SFO is the closest airport to me that had 747 flights, and if FlightAware is correct it looks like Korean Airlines is sending the 748 there.

DEN has a daily BA 747-400 from LHR and a daily LH 747-400 from Frankfurt (was a 747-8i a few days last week). National Airlines will also be bringing 747-400BCFs more often as well.

My home airport is LUX .. so there is still a ton of 747 action. All freighters of course ... Cargolux (747-400F and 747-8F launch customer) is the dominant carrier, but Atlas Air, Qatar, AirbridgeCargo, China Airlines and several others come with 747s.

On an average day there are 20 arrivals of 747s I would say...

In the past there was also some short-lived episode with a 747SP passenger service.

We are blessed at ORD with the LH 748i + a plethora of 748 cargo planes. I think we will see them here for a long time.

Ironic how the 747 was originally conceived as a freighter and look where we are now...

Still seeing Virgin 744's on an almost year round basis here at GLA. The 2019 MCO season begins late March and although extended to January 2020, will see A330-200 fleet enter the mix towards year end 2019.

ARN: The only two airlines that operated them in the 21st century were TG and MH. The latter cancelled its KUL–ARN–EWR route in 2009 and Thai replaced its 744s with 77Ws a few years later.

I stop for every pax 747 flying overhead (I'm mid-city LA), knowing they will soon be a memory. LH748, KL744 & BA744 is all I see now.

Haven't seen a QF744 in a while. Has it been retired from this route permanently?

Local airport is Amsterdam, which still sees quite a few 747s. KLM is in the process of phasing them out, but they still got some. Plus of course there are a good number of foreign 747s coming in regularly, mostly freighters.

BWI has no pax 747s.
DCA definitely has no pax 747s.
ADW has some military 747 flights occasionally, though. ;)

TPA hasn’t seen regular 747 service since the 80s but PEMCO used to get UA 744s once or twice a year. I saw a Katilla 742F the last year they were in service (2015 I want to say) and their 744Fs are through occasionally. A 748f came through during the flight test program a few years back. Then whenever the POTUS is in town and doesn’t land at MacDill.

EIN has never seen regular 747s. In fact only 2 747s landed at EIN in all of it's existence. One was a football charter operated by SS, the other was Air Force One.

MAN used to get quite a variety with PK and Air Atlanta/Excel. Cathay in the past, Qantas, BA etc. Now just the three Virgin 744s in residence and once-in-a-blue-moon freighters.

From what I found in the GDS for QF: LAXSYD daily on a 388, LAXMEL daily on a 388, LAXBNE daily on a 789, LAXJFK daily on a 789, too. QF does have a daily SFOSYD with 744 service.

And this summer we will get up to 2x daily BA 747s on top of the usual LH 748, KL 747 and all 747 cargo ops.

I have 3 home airports:
BKK- Still a 747 hub for TG, mainly operating to HND,BOM,SYD,DPS,ZRH
DMK-No longer one, since TG moved over to BKK in 2006, and OX doesn't seem to be operating anymore
CGK- GA retired theirs last year, but they seem to be parked on the maintenance apron as of last year. JT only has 1 left
(PK-LHG - previously 9V-SME) which only operates as backup for the Hajj configured A333

SYD has multiple passenger QF 744 daily, plus 2xThai daily and even Korean 748 some months (sub for A380). UPS and Atlas 744F also daily (UPS sometimes 748F), plus semi-regular (may even be daily) SQ744F

At the whim of British Airways, SAN still sees the 747. But when their retirement comes around, that will be it for our tiny but fabulous airport.

United had a few tag-on 747 flights from SAN to LAX, but that would have been hit or miss. I'd have considered stepping on my mother to get on a 747 flight as a child in the 70's, and SAN-LAX would have been the coolest thing in the universe. Never to be.

British Caledonian 747 service at SAN goes back as far as 1988 at least.

LAX up the road won't be far behind, either, and at one point might only see seasonal 747-8 service on LH after the -400's are gone.

Nothing will EVER take the place of the Queen of the Skies. My previous identity here decades ago:

In Perth, aside from occasional freighters, yes.

747 pax service to Perth has slowly decreased with no regular flights since 2012. Qantas did a few 747 flights between SYD-PER (which I was lucky enough to fly on) throughout September last year, but since that they're gone.

My home airport, CMH, only sees the occasional Air Force One 742, but Rickenbacker nearby sees lots of cargo 747s. I landed in San Diego last week, and it was nice to see a big, beautiful British Air 747 sitting there glowing in the darkness.

Back when OX still operates those 744, they operate it from BKK also instead of DMK anyway (I know, I rode on one of them around 2014 or so). But yes, OX had gone out of business, with one of their 744 still sitting in HKG after it broke down in March 2016.

While at CGK, doesn't Saudia operates 744 into CGK during Hajj?

I'm thinking of trying it since I haven't got a 747 flight in my book.
