Airlines that fly only long-haul

Fri Mar 01, 2019 7:18 pm

I'm curious about those few examples of airlines flying only long-haul. Without a short haul network to feed and with the expense of operating a long-haul aircraft, it seems very tough model to make it work successfully. Virgin Atlantic is the most successful example I can think of a scheduled airline operating only long-haul. I'm not including charter airlines or subsidiaries (like Jetstar, Air Asia X and Scoot)

In particular, I'm curious airlines that fly only long-haul and less than 5 routes:

Plus Ultra (Madrid) - 3 routes
Air Tahiti Nui (Papeete) - 4 routes
La Compagnie (Paris) - Only 1 route
Air Belgium (Brussels) do they still exist? - Only 1 route

Failed examples include:

Oasis Hong Kong
SkyGreece
Hellenic Imperial

Any others?

French Bee has 5 destinations. XL Airways France has a bit more, but they are all long haul.

Air Belgium still exists and they will restart their only route CRL-HKG-CRL on march 31st.
Flying is not inherently dangerous but it is very unforgiving in case of carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

While not entirely long haul (they operate a small short haul section) I think Air Transat deserves to be mentioned. It's even in their name, Transat is short for Trans Atlantic.

For sure WAMOS AIR, STP AIRWAYS and CORSAIR. Also TACV might count...

Sorry but I disagree... You are talking about an airline that operate around 30 737/A321 so definitely not a "small" section.

We can add to the list:

Corsair (7 destinations)
Wamos (3 destinations)
A313 A318 A319 A320 A321 A21N A330 A343 A359 A380 AT72 B734 B73H B738 B744 B752 B763 B77E B77W B788 B789 C152 DH8D MD88 E145 E175 E190 IL96 F100 PC6 PA28

How many hours/what distance to consider a flight long-haul?

There used to be an airline that had one flight only - London (I think LCY) to New York (I think EWR) in a business class only layout. They folded around the 2008 economic downturn. I don't remember the name though.

Looks like I remembered everything wrong except the year they went out of business. Took me a few hours to recall the name:

Eos Airlines (E0)

They flew between STN and JFK. All flights were operated with Boeing 757-200 with a 48 seat all-business class configuration. They were planning more destinations, but as far as I knew that never materialised.

I didn't know about that one, but I know La Compagnie basically took over that role and is still in business. They did fly from London Luton to New York Newark for a while, but that service has been suspended. They now fly between Paris Orly and Newark and will soon open a service between Nice Cote d'Azur and Newark.

Just like Eos, La Compagnie is an all-business airline and since they only fly long haul I guess it qualifies.

There was also OpenSkies, a similar airline and subsidiary of British Airways. They flew several all-business transatlantic routes on 757s and 767s, however last year they ceased those operations and are now flying under the Level brand, mostly out of Paris Orly.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, Thailand used to have an airline called Air Siam and their network consisted of 2 routes:
BKK-HKG
BKK-TYO-HNL-LAX
And their entire fleet at that time are 747-100,DC-10-30(Later involved in a accident in the late 1980s while operating for KE) and A300.
They shut down in 1976 under pressure by the Thai Government and also financial problems.

Aah good to know! I always fancied going for a ride on Eos, since they tended to be a good deal cheaper than a business class seat on the bigger carriers. I just did a few searches on La Compagnie and it's a fair bit cheaper than the rest.

A number of the ACMI cargo operators do hardly anything but long haul.
