But what do we THINK about the 777x

Thu Mar 14, 2019 4:15 pm

I saw a topic asking if we all thought it was in poor taste for Boing to have rolled it out when they did but when I clicked on it, it wouldn't open. But I want to ask, that aside, what do we all think of the looks of the 777x? I have always loved the triple 7. She is a glorious beast. BUT, I don't love the 787 tail that appears to have been put on the X. I am a fan of the more ol' fashioned squared off look of air plane tails 757. A330, 777 etc). And for some odd reason, and this is just me, I don't love the thicker front rim of the GE engine (similar to the 787 engine). But I'm nit-picking. The 777 fuselage is still so much better than the 787. So I'm thrilled she is still in production.

The only thing I am not used to yet is the thicker front rim on the engine. Makes it look smaller to me.
Other than that I can't wait to see it fly.

Don't know what you are asking? The aesthetics of the thing? Never been a fan to be honest. The drop behind the cockpit just looks cheap (and kind of is) and not designed very well.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

I think it looks mighty and menacing, very big and powerful looking. I like it. I am waiting to see the cabin, and hope that the extra width will be noticeable. But more than this I am hoping cabin noise levels will diminish. Current 777 cabin Db levels are simply too high for very long flights.

I agree. It looks like the big football playing cousin of the 787.

I too hope noise is less. From the engines, that is certain. I am not enough in the know to guess overall.

I think the 777x has a great future.

Many if not most of the world's blue chip airlines have it on order.

It is a very efficient big twin and there are no announced plans for any competition in its size class.

If it is quieter than the current B777s then great. Flying in premium economy usually means being very close to the engines which are nIce to look at but very noisy. The A350 on a flight straight after a B777 flight was so quiet in comparison.

Me neither, but the fact that they are going for thinner insulation panels is very worrisome....

Indeed. I have very recently flown the 777 again after a pretty long sequence of flights on 787/A330/A346/A350 and boy the difference is pretty mind-boggling! It's great at start-up (the GE90 howl is impressive!) and take off spool-up (both the GE90 and Trent high-pitched whine) but 20 minutes into the flight you're just wanting those engines to go to idle.... which I guess would not be necessarily be a good thing!

The hunch behind the cockpit looks better with the proportions of the 777X, but those wingtips... :vomit:

They carved out a lot of insulation to make the cabin slightly wider, so I wouldn't expect it to be much quieter than the current ones.

You all raise a good point I had not thought about. I flew the 777 from EWR to SFO last week and sat behind the engines. And I did notice how friggin' loud they were the whole time. I love that bird so much that I can overlook that, but it certainly was louder than when I fly, say, the A330 and sit behind the wing.

I'm not quite sold on the looks just yet, it's a bit oddly proportioned to me, but overall nice job Boeing, again. The crazy part to me is that, the wingspan when the wingtips are folded out is almost as long as the length of the Airbus A380, slightly shorter by about 4 feet. In addition, it's a few feet longer than the 747-8i, meaning that when it comes out, it will officially be the world's longest commercial aircraft.
If you can walk away from it intact, it was a good landing!

I'm not a fan of the three doors behind the wing. All of the renderings thus far have shown the 77X being an 8 door aircraft. I read that one of the doors can be plugged, but the renderings show no plug, just a straight line of windows.

I think it spells doom for the 747.

I think the -300ER already did that 15 years ago.

Aesthetically, the 777 is for me the best-proportioned wide-bodied aeroplane, especially those ones with raked wingtips. Hopefully the 8 and 9 versions will keep this up; I can't tell from the photographs so far. I agree that the 777's nose doesn't look that great, and it's a shame that the new versions haven't adopted something like the 787's nose, but that's my only complaint about the plane's appearance.

In comparison, the A330 and A350 have something about them that doesn't look quite right; I can't put my finger on just what it is.

I think the a350 is beautiful but it does have kind of a stubby and pointy nose, and the a330 has a pointy nose... Could it be that you don't care for pointy noses?

That's right. The A350's nose is for me one of the aesthetic improvements over the A330. Also, the A350's winglets are better looking; they fit neatly on the wingtips, rather than looking as though they have been bolted on as an afterthought as they do on the A330 and A340.

I feel like it looks disproportionate and really ugly on an otherwise beautiful plane.

The A350 is a good looking aircraft with the exception of the vertical fin
which is out of proportion and looks far too small for the airframe

The vertical fin on the 777x looks far more attractive than on the classic
The best contribution to safety is a competent Pilot.
