How many US states have you visited?

Thu Mar 21, 2019 4:04 pm

So, how many US states have you visited? And what is your criteria for counting it? Does it count if you drive through it? Connect at the airport?

If I count all states I've ever set foot in (even during flight connections): 30 states.
If I take out the states I've visited because of flight connections, then the number drops to 26 (AZ, UT, MI, and NJ...maybe 25 if I consider MN though an upcoming trip will likely put that state in the firm category).

Probably 37 all together. I think I am missing,
AK, OR, ID, NM, WY, KS, ND, SD, MN, NE, AR, IA, ME,

UT could be a technicality as I have connected twice on planes there.
Where ever you go, there you are.

I have been in all 50 with the 50th being a two week vacation in Alaska. For Maine and New Hampshire my wife and I were on a trip to Boston and we drove up I-95 through New Hampshire and into Portsmouth, Maine, just across the NH border!

Last year, I finally completed my goal of getting all 50. The last three were Mississippi, Iowa, and North Dakota. I went on a weekend trip with my family to log the 50th, North Dakota, and also managed my last two Canadian Provinces at the same time, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

My next goal is to finish up visiting the rest of the European nations. Eventually I'll have to visit Nunavut, Northwest Territories, US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa to round out my Canadian and US territories collection.

When I was three we drove from Moncton, New Brunswick to Florida, so everything on the I-95 but I don't remember it very well. In my memory I've got Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida, Virginia, and DC (though it isn't a state).

I've only been to the USA once, that was to California. It's the only state I've visited. Have overflown a lot more on my way to and from California, but never touched the ground in those states.

I have spent at least one night in 24 and set foot in three others. Should I count KY and WV even though I was 16 months old? Sure, why not!

Several years ago, I took Amtrak's Empire Builder to Fargo, ND and went to Moorhead, MN because it was right there. I then took the bus through southwestern Minnesota to Sioux Falls. I never got off the bus, but I count it.

So, my list is OR, WA, CA, HI, AK, ID, UT, MT, AZ, NV, NM, CO, WY, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, MO, IA, MN, IL, IN, OH, KY, WV.
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

As a tourist visiting from the UK I have visited:

New York, Florida, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California. If I am allowed to include states where I never left the airport then add in Illinois(ORD).

I have been to all but Alabama and North Dakota.

This takes me back to 1984/5, when United was the first carrier to fly into all 50 states. They had a promotion that if you could fly into or out of each state on a UA flight with a fixed time, you would get free travel for a year.

I was a teen. But I had a great time pouring over the timetable seeing how I could theoretically do it!

This is most incorrect; regardless of who gets to count what state on which list, you are required yes REQUIRED to set foot in the world's greatest city.

dfwjim1 wrote:

Which means you drove over the Piscatacqua River Bridge, which is most correct. Good onya.

For my list, I don't count states that I've only changed planes in (MI, KY, TN) or the ones I trundled yes TRUNDLED through by train. I've been across the country by train three times (Broadway Limited-Southwest Chief in 1991, Sunset Limited-Crescent-Mayflower in 1992, and Lake Shore Limited-California Zephyr in 1993. The Crescent took me through Mississippi, 'Bama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware and I didn't set foot in any of them; though I have since visited Georgia and N.C.

So, in alphabetical order:
Arizona (Hoover Dam, 2002)
California (lived there for 17 years)
Colorado (stepped off of the California Zephyr at Denver Union Station in 1993, have driven through the state several times since)
Connecticut (family driving from Boston to New York several times in the 80's)

Florida - Disney World 1979; Grandma in Fort Lauderdale 1984, Palm Beach, home of an architecturally significant post office in 2010
Georgia - Drove up from Jacksonville on a business trip in 2010. Mailed something from the architecturally insignificant post office in Folkston.
Hawaii - Vacay on Kaua'i in 2001. Utilized the NRHP-registered post office in Lihue though I'm not convinced the building merits the listing.
Illinois - Whole freakin' fambly is from Chi-town; attended pre-school in Arlington Heights
Indiana - Road trips 'twixt Boston and the Midwest. Bought gas at the Marathon station in Howe.
Iowa - October 2013 road trip from Minneapolis to Santa Fe; bought a bottle of water (mmmm water) at the "Country Store" in LeMars.

Kansas - Returning from Santa Fe, took U.S. 36 from Colorado through Cheyenne County, then up to Benkelman, Nebraska.
Louisiana - Nawlins 1992, overnighted ("overnit?") between arriving on the Sunset Limited and departing on the Crescent.
Maine - dropped Sis off at summer camp many times in the early 80's. Did Mom a favor and visited a psychic in Kennebunk in 1990.
Massachusetts - grew the hell up there for like a trillion years (or it seemed like it)
Minnesota - live there now. Am typing this there.

Missouri - visited St. Louis when a toddler; Mom's college roommate lived there. Remember nearly nothing of that trip; but returned in 2016 and was really struck and engaged by the WPA murals in the lobby of the main post office
Nebraska - same October 2013 road trip referenced above. Got to observe Bertram Goodhue's unique state capitol building in Lincoln.
Nevada - Holiday in Las Vegas in 1997. Several trips to there and Reno since. (Reno schmeno.)
New Hampshire - as many N.H. trips as are normal for someone growing up in Massachusetts

New Jersey - attended NYU for a bit, used to ride the PATH train just for a mild change of scenery. Also schlepped out to Newark to drop off toys for the WBGO toy drive. However, PATH's destination "indicators" inside the cars need work ("WTC" for World Trade Center, "JSQ" for Journal Square, "NWK" for Newark, "HOB" for Hoboken, but "33RD" for 33rd Street? What's wrong with "33D" for 33rd Street? Everything was working fine with three yes THREE letters till this "33RD" mess comes along and makes everything all uneven. I require compensation.
New Mexico - Mom lived and died in Santa Fe. First visited her out there in 1991.
New York - many times, growing up a Northeasterner.
North Carolina - Charlotte for work in 2010.

Ohio - the ol' I-90 trek
Oregon - weekend in Portland in 96. Just to get out of San Fran.
Pennsylvania - the usual I-90 stop in Erie, plus Sis went to college in Philly area so coupla road trips thereto
Rhode Island - see previous notes about Massachusetts upbringing.

Texas - long weekend in Dallas for some reason in 2000. Had just scored permanent employment, like an a.nutter, bought an airline ticket for the sake of it
Vermont - again with the Massachusetts thing
Washington - AWESOME week in Seattle for my 23rd birthday. Hooray for the Klondike Gold Rush Museum, Smith Tower, and a performance of Greater Tuna at the Velvet Elvis Theater.
Wisconsin - Milwaukee City Hall is the correct piece of architecture. (Unless we're limiting this to post offices, in which case the one in Ladysmith.)

Only states that I haven't been to are New Mexico, North Dakota, and Rhode Island. Eventually (next 5 years or so) I will get to these.

Of the other 47 states, I have only driven through parts of Connecticut and Vermont. All other states I have stayed overnight for at least one night and travelled through most of the state.

I have made it a point to diversify my travels, and my hobbies have helped with that (such as seeing a home game for every Major League Baseball team, and visiting airports with jet traffic).

As a tourist, I've visited

WA (twice), VA, CA (twice, but the second time it was a mere layover) and the District of Columbia which apparently is not a state, for what reason I don't know.

As for states I've flew over, probably all the states that's on the route from the Atlantic to IAD, all the states that's on the route from IAD to SEA, and OR. Maybe NV is my flight flew over it on the way from SEA to LAX, but I'm not sure.

All 50. Have flown into 47. Have not flown into Wyoming, Vermont, and Deleware. Last one will be kind of hard to achieve it seems lol.
And never just an aipirt connection in anyof them. Some quality time in each. Some better than others.... :)

So I’ve been to 42 states.

At least two of those will be checked off in the next few months. Others, like Kansas, Oklahoma and North Dakota I have no foreseeable need to visit.

Closest I've been to are Québec and Ontario.

Might get to 1 or 2 this year, I had no intention to visit as long as Trump was president, but a cousin of mine living in California is marrying in SF, and I will probably attend.

Too funny, that's how I crossed off N.H. and Maine as well--a road trip with the parentals up from Boston, with nights spent in Portsmouth, NH (what a cute little town!) and Kennebunkport, ME.

I don't count states where I never left the airport, nor ones that I merely drove through.

Alaska
Arizona
California (current home state)
Colorado
District of Columbia
Florida
Hawaii
Illinois*
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
Michican
Minnesota
New Hampshire
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina (former home state)
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Tennessee
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin

27 total.

*I'm not completely sure Illinois meets my criteria, but I have a vague memory of visiting relatives when I was a kid who I think were living there at the time.
