United future Asia / Pacific and European routes from SFO

Fri Mar 22, 2019 10:38 pm

United continues to expand its Pacific SFO hub, have more outstanding orders from Boeing 787 and Boeing 777-300ER that will be delivered in 2020, and by 2022 the Airbus A350-900

In the Asia / Pacific region, possible expansion destinations would be;
Brisbane (BNE), Guangzhou (CAN), Bangkok (BKK), Nagoya (NGO), Christchurch (CHC) (seasonal), Ho Chin Minh (SGN) and Mumbai (BOM)
* Consolidate Melbourne (MEL) and Delhi (DEL)

In Europe possible expansion destinations:

Brussels (BRU), Barcelona (BCN), Rome (FCO) and Vienna (VIE) (All Seasonal)
* Consolidate Zurich (ZRH) and Munich (MUC)

What are your predictions, maybe there will be a future flight to South America like Bogota (BOG), Lima (LIM) or Sao Paulo (GRU)?

Sure to all of the possible destinations in the Pacific region you mentioned except for BKK, that's more of a low yield tourist market. Not the place for UA.
I feel like SFO isn't a good place for flights to South America either, AA already pulls that off from their hub at MIA

IAH is much better positioned for South America flying as SFO is for the Pacific. Any China expansion depends on the economy and the unstable political relationship between the US and China.

SFO-South America won’t happen for the same reason UA won’t be flying IAH-HKG. That’s not what the hubs are designed for.

I wonder if they would consider taking on EI on SFO - DUB, getting some of the tech contracts/traffic?

Cheers,

SFO-BKK/SGN with the 787-9 will work, but will it be profitable?

I feel like either UA or SN are bound to try SFO-BRU or LAX-BRU sooner rather than later.

I also don't know how much more growth UA can stomach at SFO. There's probably still a lot of potential, but it's getting to be a pretty tight gate situation. Isn't UA trying to get some gates in T2 soon?

I believe UA and EI still have that weird codeshare going on, don't they?

Both are low yielding routes and better suited as winter seasonal ops between 15nov-end Mar

SFO-BRU on a B787 is a no brainer as p2p is good ie 45,000 pax and decent yields.

SFO-Latin America highly unlikely

SFO-BNE more suited to B787 and again during iata winter season only.

Possibly could see them picking up some of the dropped routes from Air Berlin/Virgin Atlantic- MAN, DUS,, TXL.

Definitely not BKK for UA as it's a very low yielding tourist/VFR market. The only slim chance of UA making a return to BKK or Thailand in general is if UA sets up a ULCC to service low-yielding price sensitive travellers for tourist markets like BKK and HKT.

Christchurch, even seasonally is also very unlikely. More likely a "seasonal" candidate for NZ on their 789s as part of the UA/NZ JV.

Brisbane already has many options for that market, BNE/LAX on QF and VA, BNE-YVR on AC, BNE-HNL on HA and potentially BNE-DFW on AA (depending on QF/AA JV approval).
At most UA may operate BNE-SFO on a seasonal basis and would have to rely almost entirely on O&D on the BNE end considering they have no AU partner. UA does have an interline agreement with QF, but no interline agreement with VA (any VA/UA third party tickets requires travellers to recheck their bags at the connecting points).

In NZ's JV's it tends to be the foreign carrier that serves CHC - like in the NZ-SQ JV, and the NZ-CX JV - so I see SFO-CHC (or LAX-CHC) as more of a UA metal thing. The market would definitely be there over the NW peak period. The benefit of the route is that, like with CX on HKG-CHC, it may support regulatory approval of renewal of the JV.

Cheers,

C.
