Aircraft Change on Upcoming Trip

Mon Mar 25, 2019 7:59 pm

I will be flying MKE-ATL-MCO on 9/17. Originally the flight from MKE-ATL was going to be DL 2539 deparing at 7:05 on an MD-90. However, I just got an e-mail from Delta saying that there has been a schedule change. My new flight is now DL 2085 deparing MKE at 6:00 on a 739. I'm not complaining, in fact, I'm actually excited! I'm just curious on why the change?

Isn’t Delta accelerating it’s retirement of MD’s? Maybe that’s why.

Schedules do change, especially so far in advance. Don't be surprised if there are several more changes between now and September. If other flight options are available you should be able to make a free change to your flight times though. That's what happened last time DL changed my flight times by more than one hour.

Happens all the time with changing aircraft requirements. Just be happy they didn't re-book you on a flight that arrived 20 minutes after your connecting flight left! Only reason I even found out about the change was my booking became invalid and I had to call Delta to change the connecting flight to a later time.

Definitely happens all the time. Sometimes aircraft change, sometimes times change, sometimes both change. It's one negative of booking so far out.

Not uncommon. Last year, my aircraft changed multiple times on different legs. Originally, it was MLB-ATL on a MD-88, changed to a 717 then finally to a 737-700. The ATL-LAX leg was a 777, changed to a 757 and finally ended up being an A321.

I was originally set to fly a 752 on a SEA-DTW red eye, but they changed it to a 739 not too long after I booked. I'm wondering if that will change again between now and flight time in a few weeks.

I would say the odds are low. Seeing changes like that months before is fairly common; seeing it a few weeks before the flight is fairly rare, unless something major (like the MAX grounding) happens. Of course, some last minute maintenance related swap is possible, but pretty rare in the scheme of things.

The aircraft subs within the AA and UA networks right now are more than usual right now trying to cover the Max flying. Especially in the last few weeks the changes were only a day or two before.

Yup these changes happen frequently. Usually they don't really change the trip much.

3 years ago I flew J from YYZ to SIN. My flight LHR-YYZ coming home was supposed to be on the 777. Got swapped to a 747 and I got to ride in the upper deck for the first time. Best change ever!

I'm actually happy I'm getting a 737-900 instead of an MD-90 and that I'm leaving an hour earlier...... gives me and my husband more time to look around ATL...... (plus I'll be flying First Class..... never done that before!) especially in Concourse F...... last time we were there we saw a lot of exciting stuff...... LH A340-600, Korean 747-8I (which I never thought I'd see in my life)..... AF and KLM 777s, Virgin A340........ was a lot of fun!

As long as you are happy, that is a good thing! Sometimes us avgeeks get very, very disappointed when such changes occur; It took me ten years to log a 753 after multiple failed attempts due to equipment / schedule changes... Just hope that, if your itinerary changes again, it doesn't end up being worse ;)

Me too. of course I am booking this thing 6 months in advance, so who knows? It might get upgraded again to a 757 or an A321! Either one would work!

It happens frequently, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. In my most recent attempt to fly the Delta A220, Delta changed the aircraft to an E175 on Republic (LGA-BOS)! I changed the flight destination to DFW for next month. I am hoping this one doesn't change as well.

So here's my updated Itinerary for the round trip:
Delta 2085- 9/7/19
DEP MKE 6:00AM
ARR ATL 9:00AM
Aircraft 737-900ER

Delta 897- 9/7/19
DEP ATL 12:55PM
ARR MCO 2:26PM
Aircraft: 757-200

Delta 1424- 9/14/19
DEP MCO 2:00PM
ARR DTW 4:40PM
Aircraft 757-200

Delta 947- 9/14/19
DEP DTW 8:10PM
ARR MKE 8:28PM
Aircraft: A320
This will be a bittersweet trip for me because it will be the final time I will be flying into and out of MKE........ I relocate to Omaha, NE this fall, so my home airport will once again become OMA! I will try and make a trip report.
