Can any commercially viable route not be flown non stop after QF starts SYD-LHR direct ?

Thu Mar 28, 2019 2:06 am

In a few years either Boeing or Airbus will
be able to provide an aircraft that will allow Qantas to fly non stop from Sydney to London with an economic payload

This is an extraordinary milestone, an aircraft that can connect just about any two points on earth with a non stop flight

Having said that, will there be any remaining commercially viable non stop routes beyond the capabilities of an aircraft with, for the sake of argument a 10,000 NM range
The best contribution to safety is a competent Pilot.

NYC-SYD great circle is 8,650nm.

LHR-AKL is 9,910nm. It is not clear whether tail winds would bring the effective distance down to the 9,500nm that seems to be the still air planning distance for QF. AKL-LHR would presumably be flown eastbound roughly over Anchorage, same as a QF SYD-LHR sector, with effective distance no more than 9,500nm. Whether NZ would have the premium traffic to sustain such a route remains to be seen – they have a business model more oriented to leisure traffic and cargo than QF.

AKL - LHR will still likely be out of the range of the Project Sunrise jet. Probably anything LHR - South Pacific (other than Australia) will remain out of range.

If SYD-LHR is viable, AKL-LHR is also viable
What?

I highly doubt this route might be considered as economically viable

I guess CDG-NOU could be eligible

Who says the route will be economically viable?

Not every route prints money.

What about HKG-MIA (CX), NRT/HND-MIA (AA/JL), TPE-MIA (BR/CI)?

Any route that doesn’t print doesn’t last long. These ULH routes require serious amounts of premium traffic. See SQ’s NYC-SIN route history.

"Commercial viable" is a term that depends a lot on cost. Qantas might be able to launch SYD-LHR but still having a higher cost that would make some route less than viable as oppose to when the cost is to be lower

That was suspended for a few years due to high fuel price and is now resuming service

Well, answering your question, what about SIN-MEX, SIN-GRU, HKG-MEX, LAX-JNB/CPT, SYD-YYZ, AKL-YYZ, NRT-GRU, HKG-GRU, YYZ-JNB/CPT

And what about YVR-CPT, SEA-CPT, SIN-BOS? Don't forget that the other longest nonstop flight is now SIN-EWR direct on SQ, so SIN-BOS would be even longer.
And how about SVO-EZE? Or HEL-EZE?

Has LY ever considered flying TLV-LAX nonstop?

Ahh, how about AKL/LHR which is further than SYD/LHR. Admittedly the routing is almost direct north over the pole, I wonder if going south would be viable if winds were more favorable albeit (I think) slightly longer distance. Being North/south orientation may be positive in regards headwinds, but sidewinds would affect both directions whereas heading west or east, at least one direction gets a tailwind

EL AL has flown nonstop from LAX to TLV for years. 744 first and now 777-200ER, the future probably will bring 787-9.

SIN-BOS is 112nm shorter than SIN-EWR.

Of possibly commercially viable routes, I'd say the following;

AKL-LHR
NRT/HND-GRU

Those two are the only routes longer than SYD-LHR that I would think could *possibly* have enough demand. This demand however - in both cases - I would imagine is less premium than LHR-SYD.
