When was your last MD-80 flight and how was it?

Mon Apr 01, 2019 12:59 am

Recently in an S80 thrill after my flight to ELP from DFW was operated via MD-80. Super fun plane to fly, it's like an amusement park ride for avgeeks. Seats were comfy too, FA's very friendly. 4 hour delay because N501AA (our original aircraft) had some mechanical issue and we had to swap to N961TW. Almost fell asleep on her despite being on 26A, right next to the engines. We even did a funky go-around and cruised around El Paso because some small airplane was still on the runway we attempted to land at. Overall, a very fun and unusual experience compared to the B737s I'm used to.

My last MD 88 flight was in February 2016. I'm a teacher in New York, so every break I take a trip out to explore. For mid-winter break I went to Orlando for the theme parks and flew in the MD 88. It was ok, but I'm glad that Delta is phasing them out and replacing them with A321s. The engines were louuuuud. I remember thinking they probably will keep them around for sometime, but as fuel prices have risen they've started replacing them. For a period of about 3 years most flights out of both JFK and LaGuardia to Florida were all MD's, but now they're mostly Airbus.

Were they really that loud? I don't recall it being too bad on my flight... then again, it was an 82/83.

It was crazy loud haha.... I was seated towards the back. Overall, it was a good flight. Newer planes have really spoiled us. I can't imagine ever wanting to fly an older plane like that. If you wanna chat about trips and stuff, dm me!

I believe my last MD-80 flight was back in July, 2007. It was Bangkok Don Mueang to Phuket on One-Two-GO Airlines. It was about 6 weeks before the One-Two-GO Airlines flight 269 MD-82 crash on the same route. I do not remember the tail number, but we originally booked the flight on Air Asia and our group of four was moved onto the One-Two-GO flight. I remember that the aircraft was very old, noisy and rattled quite a bit. After we landed, that was one flight I was glad was over. I can't remember being on another MD-80 since, but I have flown on one DL MD-90 since that flight.

My last MD-80 flight was on Alaska Airlines, so that should give you an idea of how long ago it was. I believe it was about a month before they retired the last of them, which would put it some time in 2008 (Sorry, I don't feel like looking up exactly when that was right now). I believe they had only six left in their fleet at the time. I was flying SEA-SMF, returning from a work trip. Even over a decade ago I was happy to get a flight on an MD-80 rather than another 737. Other that that it was too long ago to remember how it was, although I do remember it wasn't full, and I got both seats on the two seat side to myself.

Although that was my last MD-80 flight, I have taken a few MD-90 flights on Delta since then.

My last (and actually only) flight was an MD-82 in 2005 with MNG Airlines (LEJ-AYT). Nothing too spectacular to be honest, but it was the first time I've seen an aircraft with non symmetrical seat layout. I was sitting quite far in the front, so I remember the aircraft being very quite.

I was also wearing headphones with music blasting, right next to the engines. It may have been "loud", but from the inside of my headphones, the MD-83 sounded very similar to the standard 737-700s and 800s I fly with WN. The one true difference is when the engines are at maximum power, and sound like electric razors on take off.

My last MD-80 (MD-88) flight was last month on Delta, from BNA-ATL. It was a nice flight, I was seated about 5 rows from the back. I like to hear the engines, those JT-8's make a noise that is unique, and is slowly disappearing from the skies.

I remember my first MD-80 flight back in 1986, and I remember thinking how quiet is was! But that was compared to the DC-9's, 737-200's and 727's of the day.

I don't hesitate flying on the Mad Dogs. In fact, I have 2 more flights already booked for later in the year on both the MD-80, and MD-90. I would much rather fly on one of them than an RJ, or boring Airbus, or 737. But remember, I am an enthusiast.

About a month ago on an AA S80 from DFW to ICT (and again on the way back) and it felt like stepping back in time as the cabin was well past it's prime. Seemed like a major downgrade from the seemingly brand new CRJ I got to DFW on. Had a similar experience with AA two years ago going to Hawaii. Flew a brand new A321 from LAX to HNL, then a well worn 757 from HNL to PHX. I can appreciate the Mad Dog and 757 but they all seem to be getting dated since they're nearing retirement no one wants to invest in them beyond basic maintenance.

11/14/2018. N968TW, MCI-DFW.

It was pretty uneventful to be honest but I enjoyed flying in it nonetheless. It will most likely end up being my last ever flight on an MD-80. It was definitely the highlight of that trip. The A321s and 737s I flew on afterwards were boring in comparison.

My first, last, thus far and probably forever only flight on an MD-80 series was in January with Delta (MD-88) from ORD to ATL. My experience was amazing, thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the flight.
I had booked regular main cabin and advance-selected a window seat on the side of the aisle that only has two seats and indeed, being a mid-afternoon departure, the aisle seat next to me remained unoccupied so I put up the armrest and had both a window and direct aisle access. I sat forward of the wings (row 20 iirc) and the cabin was remarkably quiet there.
However, when I made use of my unobstructed aisle access and went to the aft lavatory, the noise was incredible. Could not imagine sitting back here, especially since at least one row was entirely without windows.

My last flight on a MD was in the summer of 2013, DFW to New Orleans and then a change of planes to MIA on a 738 both flights on AA. I sat in the back of the MD and I remembered the inside being rather dirty and loud.

How interesting!

On N501AA, that window is actually present (on the side with only two seats, 27A for American has no window on the -83's) but on the MD-82, AA's oldest airplane, indeed had that seat.

I sat in seat 26A. I don't really remember being bothered much by the noise. On takeoff (and later on arrival at ELP when we did a go around due to a small airplane on the runway that had not turned in time..) the JT8D's sounded like electric razors while at full power, it's was great. Oh also, I nearly fell asleep despite being so close to the engines. It doesn't bother me at all.

My last MD88 flight was in May 2017 on DL ATL-CAE. It lasted a little over 30 minutes or so and we literally topped off at FL230 for only a minute or so before descending. A fun flight in all.

AA DFW to PHX, Apr 2011, can't believe almost 8 years ago.

Remember being disappointed it wasn't louder, even though I was fairly near the back.

Also had a go-around into PHX due to a tech issue which they troubleshooted while doing circuits, which my wife found a little disconcerting.

September, 2010: SAN-DFW (N482AA) and DFW-SAN (N16545) on AA.

The outgoing flight boarded just fine. And then we sat there for an hour with no explanation. The whole flight simply took place one hour later.

A completely unremarkable flight in every way, except for taking an hour on the ground with no explanation.

Oh, and the riot that nearly occurred on board after we landed was fun too - all the passengers about to the miss the one-and-only connecting flights to Latin America and Europe of the day, and the flight crew completely oblivious to it until passengers started screaming.

Our one hour connection turned into less than twenty minutes, as we let those out with tight connections first. Thank god for SkyLink, as we ran onto the aircraft to the dirty looks of all the passengers already on the plane. That's always fun, isn't it?

My absolute last flight was a replacement aircraft for an MD80 that went tech at the gate. "Don't go anywhere, because we'll have information for you soon!" AA promised. Yeah, that lasted a total of fifteen minutes before hungry passengers started going off to look for food. Three hours later - after two different San Diego bound MD80's departed from gates right next to us - we finally got a replacement aircraft.

Also a completely unremarkable flight in every way except being hopelessly delayed.

All of my flights on MD80's have been great - it's been the AAirline flying it that I don't have the greatest experiences with. C'est la vie.

Yep, classic MD-80s for you... exact same thing happened to me. N501AA decided it didn't feel like working and our flight to ELP ended up being delayed 3 hours and 50 minutes, until N961TW came to a different gate for us.

My last one was over a year ago in January 2018. It was N403NV for Allegiant, LAS-AUS. I selected my seat, 26A? It's the closest you can get to the engines without the engine being blocked. The previous time I was on the MD80 I had the engine block... it's a bit more different being behind the fan than in front. Both cases, the sound of the aircraft _reeeeally_ fills up the cabin, and fast, when the aircraft is starting up, and gets louder on takeoff. I accepted it to be my last MD80 ride, unless for some reason I end up flying it out of/to DFW from here for a trip somewhere, or I go to ATL where there are still many of them (I don't know if I'd choose an MD80 over a 757 since I've only flown the latter once though, over 6 MD80 rides).

September from DFW to GRR. It reminded me of how disconnected from the experience of flight we have become in modern aircraft. On the MD-80, I felt truly connected to the experience of flight. The roar of the engines, the deck angle, the feeling of gliding on approach. It was probably my last MD-80 flight ever. But we took a DL MD-90 from GRR to DTW on our way back to SFO.

I've got my first one booked for later this year, MIA-ATL with DL. As it's part of a return leg to Manchester with VS we've been assigned the Comfort Plus cabin meaning no seat next to the engine for me :/ Still it should be fun to finally get a Mad Dog in the book :)

I flew an AA MD-80 last month from DFW to ICT. ICT still has 3 MD-80 flights per day to/from DFW. The MD-80 is much more comfortable than AA's A319s in coach. Will miss the 3-2 seating in coach.

I'm planning a trip from ARN to SAT, and will actively be looking for a MD80 segment.
Right now the flight plan is ARN-EWR-SAT-ATL-EWR-ARN, where SAT-ATL is on a MD90 and ATL-EWR is on a 717. Neither flies in Europe.

Last Super 80 flight was in January 2019, IAH-DFW...FC bulkhead
Last MD88 flight was July 2018, IAH-ATL...FC bulkhead

Next MD90 flight will be this month, IAH-ATL...FC bulkhead

My last was an Allegiant MD-83 from SFB-TUL in February 2017. It was a fine flight. I will have another this weekend on AA from DFW-SAT and am looking forward to something different for a change and seats more comfortable than what AA has in their 737s at least. I always like sitting in the front on MD-80s for how quiet it is - like being a bird.

Hence my username, the MD80 is my favorite aircraft. I flew on an AA MD83 back in February from DFW to TUL. Got to ride on N984TW, last MD80 ever produced. Great ride, great flight. Hopefully I can catch some more Delta MD88's/MD90's/717's before they're gone.

Spanish Airline Volotea operates the 717 in Europe. Yesterday I was tracking them on flightradar24 and noticed six of the type in the air simultanously.

A very dIfferent experience with lots of squeaks and noises in the cabin along with engines being loud compared to usual NBs.

I usually fly Delta so I get them all the time (717, MD-88, MD-90)
I usually fly them in First or Comfort+ so I don't get the engine noise. They are remarkably quiet up front.

Only con is the lack of IFE, but they usually use them on short flights.

Last MD flight was January on a -88, and I have a couple 717 flights this month

With your name, I have to now, have you ever flown N501AA? She is very very... um, retro on the inside to say the least!!! Sounded exactly like N961TW though.

My last flight on an MD80 was an SAS flight from OSL to LHR. It was a business class trip and as I was seated up near the front it was nice and quiet and back in 1993 when this happened even intra European short haul business was quite comfy.

It was the last leg of an LHR-OSL-ARN-OSL-LHR trip and all four sectors had been on the MD80. That trip was my first and last experience of the MD80 though I also had three flights on its predecessor the DC9.

I have not flown that particular airframe, although I flew a bunch of other AA MD82's.

Funnily enough I was originally scheduled for N501AA for the flight I took, but about 12 hours before they swapped it to N984TW and had N501AA fly a different route. Still worked out though since I could claim I flew the last MD80 ever produced. Also flew N920DE, the last MD88 produced.

I am assuming you did this back when they had their original tail cones and the black noses? Speaking of which, you are probably an expert on this, but what exactly was the black nose dot for and why did the tail cones get changed?

I technically did not fly N501AA, but we did board it and sit in it for a good two hours. Same thing right?

Still see them regularly here from XNA-ATL on the early morning departure.
Last flight was XNA-ATL in December of 2017 (N976DL). Pretty routine flight. Other than the lack of seat-back screens, DL's brand conformity is pretty strong across the fleet, IMHO. Was seated in 1D.
Next one will be XNA-ATL in September if the current schedule holds.
Next up: XNA-ATL-PWM-ATL-XNA

Over a decade for me. Two flights in 2008:

MD-83. Avianca. Cartagena - Miami

MD-88. Delta. Atlanta - Miami

I have little recollection of either flight. Aside from seeing a pregnant Samantha Bee flying on the MD-88.

DFW-AKR E145 (...)
AKR-ATL MD90
ATL-EWR 717

Most recent one for me was in November of 2018 aboard N962DL flying SAV-ATL. I've always loved flying on the MD-80, and this was no exception; the light load made for a fun takeoff!

There's a good chance I'll catch another one this summer with American or Delta depending on how I end up traveling to IND.

Great answers guys.

To me the MD-80 (Dunno if Delta's are different from AA's, probably not.) Is not about convenience or flying to get somewhere now. My flight and most likely all MD-80 rides are like the roller coasters of aviation, amusement park rides, but very endearing and fun ones. I think that is good though, flying is supposed to be a special experience isn't it?

Last month MCI-DFW and DFW-MCI a few days later - both of course on AA. I booked these two flights specifically because it was an MD-83 both legs and soon they're going to be gone for good - at least on AA.

I live under the flight path for the departing MCI-DFW flights and when this route was almost always an MD-80 I could tell what time it was just by the engine noise from 11,000 feet. Not just the sound but the length of time I can hear it.

2011, Alitalia MD82 Rome to Venice, MD80s have been really rare outside of the US for a long time.

Interestingly my last ever DC9 flights (indeed my only ever DC9 flights) were only a year earlier in 2010 in Egypt, from Aswan to Abu Simbel and back on an Air Memphis DC9-31! That plane (48131 ex US Air) was finally retired in 2013.

I believe my most recent MD-80 flight was a Delta flight from DTW to DCA back in 2015. I'm trying to remember if I've taken another MD-80 flight since then. I've been on the MD-90 and 717, but can't recall if I've been on the MD-80 (either with AA or DL).
