Busiest aviation markets without nonstop service

Fri Apr 05, 2019 6:49 pm

Some that come to my mind are NYC-Australia/NZ/South Pacific, California to SE Asia (ex Singapore), and London-Auckland. What else can you guys think of?

I could be wrong, but I think SAO-TYO would fit the bill.

Except Singapore is not all of SE Asia, nor was it the biggest underserved market out of LAX before the resumption of nonstop service. That title goes to LAX-SGN (#5) and LAX-BKK (#11) according to the attached report.

Undoubtly SYD-LHR and MEL-LHR, NYC -Austrlia/NZ/SP does not come up to either in passenger numbers.

When Venezuela was not such a mess like it is right now, not really a joke. Citgo (Majority own by Venezuelan state-own PDVSA) has its headquarter in Houston, and there are certainly oil/gas traffic.

No. MIA cannot even beat its in-state "rival" MCO in terms of traffic to/from East Asia.

IAH-LOS would be another fair size market with no non-stop. ET is starting flights to LFW (where one can easily change to an ASKY flight to LOS), though, making that trip a lot easier.

Yeah sure but United recently stopped running IAH-CCS and I doubt the crew would be willing to go to Venezuela

Any market without nonstop service to London would qualify.

  • MUC-ADD
  • AMS-ADD
  • KIX-IST; this might have to wait until the KIX/ITM/UKB liberalization brings down KIX's sky-high fees. With Expo 2025 on the horizon, Hyogo Prefecture recently approved MLIT's request to extend UKB's flight operations by one hour (to 11pm) and increase the daily cap from 60 movements/day to 80. Also TK may not want to expand in Japan given the current political chaos in Turkey.
  • SEA-MNL
  • SEA-DEL
  • SEA-MUC
  • SFO-HGH (I am shocked by this absence. Would SEA-HGH/SJC-HGH be profitable too?)
  • JFK/EWR-HYD and JFK/EWR-BLR; this is another shocking absence. Hyd and Bengaluru are both huge for biotech/pharma, and NYC/northern NJ are the main biotech/pharma clusters in the U.S.
  • YVR-CKG (although MF/HU already have bargain basement 1-stop fares. YVR-XIY and YVR-FOC can also apply here)

Another point regarding EWR-HYD/BLR. The number of big pharma companies in northern NJ is staggering. Novo Norodisk, Sanofi, Merck, Novartis, Bayer, the list goes on. Lest I forget Pfizer, which has had a whole building to itself on East 42nd Street at 2nd Avenue near the UN since 1960 (and will be moving into The Spiral development at Hudson Yards). Bristol-Meyers Squibb is at 345 Park Avenue, and has a huge R&D facility near Rutgers. Also near the Rutgers campus is the HQ of Johnson & Johnson. Apparently the Port Authority is refusing to give the ME3 any additional EWR slots. Obviously Gulf carriers carry a lot of traffic to central/southern India.

UA tried the route, and left the market in less than a year. It's just not as high yield as you think. Plus Hangzhou is close enough to Shanghai where there are some bargain bin fares (including premium cabin) to/from US. Once Shanghai East Station is finished (Whenever that is...), Pudong would be a lot more accessible to the HSR network, making it an even better hub to access the rest of YRD region (i.e. Hangzhou, Wuxi/Suzhou, Nanjing, etc.).
