Will UA have a round-the-world route network with SFO-DEL?

Thu Apr 11, 2019 11:09 pm

Once UA begins flying seasonally from DEL to SFO in 12/2019, is it fair to say that it will have a round-the-world route network without the help of its codeshare partners?

Judging from this track of an AI flight from DEL to SFO (https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AIC ... /VIDP/KSFO ), it's pretty clear that flights from DEL to SFO cross the Pacific rather than the Atlantic. Therefore, you could fly on UA from SFO to EWR, then from EWR to DEL (which of course crosses the Atlantic), and then from DEL to SFO. In doing so, you would travel around the world all on UA. (To be honest, even flying from SFO to DEL and then from DEL to SFO could also be a round-the-world itinerary, provided that the SFO --> DEL leg crosses the Atlantic (see https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AIC ... /KSFO/VIDP )

Are there any airlines currently offering round-the-world service (not including codeshares)?

AC has a similar round the world service as it operates YYZ-DEL-YVR-YYZ, although that has been suspended due to the Pakistani Airspace closure.

By considering SFO-DEL-SFO around the world given the potential track, AI also qualifies & SQ qualifies with SIN-EWR-SIN or SQ SIN-FRA-NYC-SIN, Interesting all are Star Alliance Carriers.

AC also did YYZ-LHR-BOM-SIN using L-1011s (the "Singapore 85" promo) and later 747-400 Combis. There was also YYZ-FRA-DEL and YVR-LHR-DEL also using 74Es, but I don't know if any of those routes crossed the Pacific west-east (which would have made them true RTW routes).

Actually, since EWR-HKG goes over Svalbard while HKG-EWR goes via either Vancouver or Fairbanks, it would have been a round-the-world flight on its metal.

Yes they will

I brought this up when the new route
was announced

It’s actually quite an epic milestone.
A true RTW flight on one passenger airline
has not been around for a while

Good for United, I think they should promote it as such and number it flight 2
for the eastbound and 1 for the westbound leg

As Pan Am used to

That would be cool! Glad I'm not the only one who sees it this way.
