Next IAD international destination?

Tue Apr 23, 2019 4:02 pm

Hey guys,

IAD has seen a large amount of growth in the end of 2018 and 2019 so far. TAP, Alitalia, Egyptair, have all announced service to IAD starting this year, as well as United adding destinations abroad (Tel Aviv) and domestic. What do you guys think logically is next?

Surprised they don’t have a PVG route.

Also possibly a link to Santiago/Buenos Aires?

The most likely routes for next year are definitely WAW-IAD on LOT Polish, TPE-IAD on EVA Air, or Swiss ZRH-IAD

If Iberia was to grow in USA serving a new market then I’d place my bet on IAD-MAD by Iberia.

I was thinking Swiss would make sense, however United already serves both GVA and ZRH from IAD, so the capacity might not support an extra a330 flight.

I saw something about it in the Swiss thread, but definitely not as likely as LOT.

Good news. Looks like they'll keep the Dublin stopover as well, meaning that IAD will see Ethiopian equipment twice on some days.

I really wish China Eastern would start PVG to IAD as it would be far more convenient for me visiting family versus using JFK. I heard rumors MU is looking at Houston or Washington as its next US destination.

LOT and IB were my 2 guesses. I also think we will see additional frequencies and destinations from UA next year. I think we will see a 2nd CDG frequency among others.

What about Prague? United might be testing the waters with EWR-PRG this summer and I think the potential is there to start PRG-IAD, say 3-4 times weekly.

IB did serve IAD few years back and it failed, IIRC it was never daily and it was at the time IB only long haulers were A340's.

I think it's a long shot even on the A332 and A359, UA runs seasonal on a 752.

Milan Malpensa on either Air Italy or United would be possible. Washington to Milan is currently unserved.

Could SIN on SQ be a dark horse? They recently expanded to SEA, and IAD is a huge Star Alliance hub...

I think expanding east in Europe might be easiest. So Warsaw, Athens, Oslo, Prague, Stockholm, Budapest. A wacky European one would be Mallorca.
In Africa, Cairo is a gaping hole as is Lagos.
S. American - Rio, Santiago, Lima. B. Aires and
Asia/Far East - Shanghai, Jakarta, Singapore, Bangkok (not sure the practicality of these, whether nonstop flight is possible).

Most likely would be Warsaw with LOT, Oslo with Norwegian, Rio?
