When they bought Western Airlines? I so miss Western Airlines - "The Only Way To Fly"

Airport Activity Statistics for 1988 shows 31458 DL sched-svc departures from LAX, 26960 UA, 24876 AA.

And 27339 USAir and 8755 PSA, so if you combine those two...

They were obviously losing money in LA.

One thing that happened post merger was the further build up of SLC which took resources away from LAX. They also had the PDX hub which diminished LAX as well.

Another thing was in the mid 90s they lost Skywest from being a Delta Connection carrier to United Express at LAX which certainly robbed DL of much feed.

In my personal view, DL was never able to properly connect with Angelenos and pretty much wiped out the goodwill and popular following they should have capitalized on from Western.

Let's remember Delta entered a period of general malaise in 1990s, going from industry darling to a troubled example.

The DL we see today is a by product of significant restructuring including trip into bankruptcy.
