Longest fleet-wide livery repainting?

Thu May 02, 2019 5:28 pm

What's the longest an airline has taken to repaint their entire fleet into a new livery after a rebranding?

The oldest rebrands with old liveries still flying that I can remember are:
    *Spirit in 2008 and 2014
*TACA in 2008, and then in 2013 when it merged with Avianca.
    *Air France in 2009.

Some more recent ones are Air New Zealand (2012), American (2013), Iberia (2013). Have they completed their repainting?

United has to be the absolute worst at having a unified fleet livery. Spirit is bad, too, I agree!

Spirit still has silver airbuses flying around.

WN will take a while to repaint their whole fleet.

LATAM still has plenty of LAN/TAM birds flying around, too.

Alitalia still has an A321 flying around in the old pre-2006 Landor livery (I-BIXQ). Only about 1/4 of the fleet has been repainted into the 2016 livery, while the remainder sports the 2006 branding. Granted, given they've been in administration for two years now, repainting the fleet is surely not their top priority.

I think American is done except for the MD-80s, which won't be repainted as they are due to be retired. However I'm not sure 100% of the regional jets have been repainted.

There was a US Airways Express Dash8 in the dark blue that lasted until the AA merger.

I haven't seen the OO Crj-200s in a while, but they were in the white Eagle colors. All of the E140s brought out of the desert are still in the old paint.

UA was slow in getting rid of their Battleship livery. IIRC, they still had a few flying when they merged CO. UA had 4 different livery's during the merger. PMCO, PMUA(battleship) PMUA(blue), and the now old UA livery.

I think UA also had a plane in the Battleship livery flying around in 2014. IIRC I've seen a shot of a CRJ-700 at ORD with the battleship livery in 2014. It's probably on here somewhere.

Edit: Here it is: Image

Furthermore, I recall seeing in AA CRJ-200 at DCA with the old US Airways livery in October, 2017. I think that one made it to 2018, too. That's well over 2 years after US Airways shut down.

VS - for such a small airline, they do seem to spend an age painting their a/c.

Qantas still has 3 Boeing 717s in the original 1984 wingless Kangaroo livery from 1984.

This is 12 years after the livery was updated in 2007. The livery was subsequently updated in 2016.

There were actually a few 737s, 717s, A330s and Dash 8s that never appeared in the 2007-2016 livery due to a slow repaint process.

To be fair, there are plenty of airlines that are far smaller than UA fleetwise that are taking as long or longer to repaint to a standardized livery. UA’s fleet (mainline+branded regional) is over 1,000 strong. It is inherently going to take time to repaint that many planes while still maintaining the operation.

To get an accurate idea of who is taking the longest one should look at the number of years without a unified livery in relation to fleet size.

British Airways.
Negus livery was unveiled 1973 and they still had BOAC hybrid B747s in 1980 with “British” titles. Arguably half the fleet even now is in the previous shade of white and some don’t have the crest added yet.

Northwest took an age to rebrand in the 1989 scheme as they went Chp11 soon after the unveiling I think?

Continental Airlines when Gordon Bethune took over in 10/1994. Back then there were planes in "meatball" livery, which got discontinued in 1991. For this purpose, Bethune made a priority to have all aircrafts in the "globe" livery, which then migrated yo UA.

I'm pretty sure some of the Battleship Gray aircraft in United's fleet never got to wear Rising Blue, instantly going to the CO/UA livery.

I think Air France's FGMZA is still in the "old" livery, as only one in the fleet. The remainder of the fleet have been painted for ages!

I don’t think so. There is definitely at least one 777 still wearing the old livery. A number of A321 recently too at the very least.

LAN/TAM rebranding to LATAM has taken forever, specially on it's Airbus fleet. They must have a really busy fleet and maybe they just can't afford to have a few planes on the ground for such an extended period of time.

Yeah so Qantas is so slow that it's now 12 years and it's git 3 livery variations flying. That's gotta be a record.

Almost 70% of WN’s fleet is in the new colors. Once MAX deliveries resume and 700 retirements start, it should increase rapidly.

I remember seeing a NW DC-9 in mid-1995 that was still wearing the Republic hybrid livery. Wasn’t the Republic takeover in 1997?

When AC introduced their Eurowhite livery in 1993, they still had many single red cheatline liveried aircraft and the 1989 double red stripe lasted until late 1998.

Similarly, AC Express replaced the AC Jazz branding/livery on May 1, 2011 (when AC resumed YTZ) and it took until late last year for the last Dash 8 to get painted, skipping the toothpaste livery into the current black.

Three DH8Cs went straight from the dark blue US livery to the new AA livery. N327EN, N328EN, and N337EN.

The dark blue livery in general was still around for quite some time. I flew on a US A319 in 2009 that still had dark blue, as well as seeing an Air Wisconsin CRJ2 at DCA in 2012. A few A321s and Republic E170s still had dark blue all the way up until 2012.

Quite a few E140s have received new paint. There are still some with old colors that got rushed back into service.

I remember one time in 2011 seeing a Q400 in new Globe paint, a CRJ7 in Rising Blue, and two A320s in Battleship Grey all lined up consecutively down the concourse.

DL was in various states of repainting their fleet into a newer livery continuously from 1997 until the early 2010s, with three different liveries for a good portion of it.

MH still have several 738s in the old livery which was officially phased out in 2015, although they'd been receiving new aircraft in an updated livery since 2012.

Virgin Atlantic is another one that comes to mind. Some of their A346s still have one of their much older liveries.

LOT have to be up there too. They announced a new livery back in 2012, together with the delivery of their first 787, but still to this day several aircraft fly around in the old livery

With the exception of the retro B738 and B744 I don't believe MH have painted an entire aircraft in close to 10 years!

Yep, even saw the goldish livery (prior to canyon blue) a few days ago (didn't get the reg but maybe that was a special livery)

TG's current livery was announced in 2005, with the arrival of the A340-500, but by 2010, there were still a few A300 (or A330) in the old colors.

It's also quite possible that some older planes that are slated for retiring/scrapping.....the airline may decide to not repaint them and just fly them in the old livery until they are pushed out....?
