A340-500/600

Wed May 08, 2019 12:06 pm

My apologies if this has been discussed before, however are there any A340-500’s still flying commercially? I’ve seen a few private/corporate out and about. Are Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, and Lufthansa the only three that fly the A340-600 now?

Mahan Airlines operates (7 per flightradar) A340-600. Not aware of any airlines operating A340-500's.

HiFly until as recently as October 2018 had one A340-500, CS-TFX. It was used on ACMI jobs and single charters, such as for football teams. The plane is stored in Lourdes now.

South African Airways still have A340-600s. They still fly daily JNB-JFK and JNB-FRA and occasionally elsewhere. However, I expect them to be retired within the next 18 month.

Right now, just 4K-AZ85/6 for J2, and they're generally wasted on short hops within the region where a B788 could operate more efficiently.

There are still a good amount of private/government A340s according to https://www.planespotters.net/production-list/Airbus/A340
Qatar had two A340-600s that were withdrawn from service about a week ago.

SAA uses the the A340-600 and A330 on JNB-CPT (SA323) and CPT-JNB (SA346). Nice two hour flight if you still want to catch one before they're gone.

Only 4K-AZ86 is used, 4K-AZ85 is stored. Almost exclusively used on DXB route but occasionally on other regional routes. It is the only A345 in commercial service.

Just a few years ago, 4K-AZ85/6 and CS-TFX were regulars at JFK. The other ex-Kingfisher frame now flies for the Turkish government.

I like the airfleets summary. It allows one to look at who flies what. Note: it has quite a time lag, so it can be off by 3 to 6 weeks, but it eventually catches up.

Seems like it's either GYD-DXB or GYD-IST.

Otherwise, A345 are VIP or government planes. For US-based a.nutter the one own by Sheldon Adelson/Las Vegas Sands is probably the easiest to get spotted.

For A346 - too bad IB no longer fly that between MAD and LHR. That's a nice ride on a 2.5hr flight.

I think that an Iberia A340-600 still makes the occasional appearance at Heathrow. There's still one or two Virgin ones coming in as well. Sadly, I fear that in another couple of years, the A340 will be just a memory here.
