When Did Emirates Start Serving Australia?

Thu May 09, 2019 9:28 pm

I really have searched, "Google is your friend" people. All I have established is that Emirates first served Melbourne, later Sydney, but no idea of timeframe at all. I flew on their 777-200 DXB-SIN-SYD in 2002, and nonstop on their A340-500 in 2007. By 2010 it was multiple 777 and A380, mix of nonstop (A380) and via BKK (777). Can you guys shed any more light on this? Really curious because I remember Sydney with wall-to-wall jumbos (OA, AZ, ME, LH, KL) DC-10s (JAT, UTA), A340s (Egyptair, Gulf Air, Virgin Atlantic), even A310s (SU, "Jes Air" of Bulgaria, ME again), and let's not forget those Lauda 767s which my family, who think they're a bit posh, all flew because they were really cheap in business class. All of those carriers went the way of the dodo because of the ME3. Your memories of the Emirates takeover are welcome here -- go!

OK that is helpful, I must say I deliberately disregarded the Emirates site cos the About page is usually aviation-illiterate, just stuff about share options and greenwash. Anyone else got more?

Emirates first flew to Melbourne in Australia back in 1996, and the service was :
Dubai - Jakarta - Melbourne with A310-300.

With the delivery of the Boeing 777-200s they then served:
Dubai - Singapore - Melbourne 3 Weekly B777-200

Sydney services were inaugurated in 1999 operating:
Dubai - Singapore - Sydney with A330-200

With the introduction of the A340-500 fleet they operated non stop Dubai-Sydney in 2003.

As for Gulf Air they flew to Sydney & Melbourne from 1995/1996:
Bahrain – Singapore – Sydney – Melbourne – Singapore – Bahrain 4 weekly B767-300ER

Melbourne has always been via Singapore. Not Jakarta, however Jakarta was the initial plan but it never actually happened.

Perth was launched in 2001 or 2002 - defenitely not 1999 , I remember this well as I was in Perth in 1999 :)

Yeah that initial timeline isn't quite right. I wanted to try the A345 so I flew it CHC -SYD in about 2005. Buy 2007 I was living in the USA so it definitely was earlier than that. The jet was a big deal at the time as it meant non-stop to DXB out of Syd and MEL. The 77W was only just getting started.

I dunno.... per A.net wisdom, all those A310/A330/A340/B777 must have been flying empty, cuz according to many, the A380 in 2008 is the only reason anyone flies EK, and what "makes them special".

For some strange reason i don't recall them in Sydney before the A345. I know that's not the case, but that's how my brain is working....

(and it's bittersweet for some of Frank Schaefer's scanned film shots to come up - RIP)
