Shortest Heavy Domestic US Flight 5/23/19?

Caught this today while browsing flightaware. Maybe just a one time upgrade? Re-position flight? Can anyone give some insight on this?

If you look at the previously operated flights it appears to be a one-off substitution. Looks like the flight is typically operated with an A320 or 739

United routinely flies wide bodies SFO-LAX, nothing new here. Hub to Hub is very common

Repositioning.

If you look at history by plane, DL usually rotate their aircraft at AMS (i.e. something like DTW-AMS-MSP-AMS-DTW). The inbound A333 into DTW is delayed, though:

Today also look to be the first day which DTW-FCO is switched to a A333:

So essentially it's one-off aircraft rotation within DL's network. UA does this between hubs sometimes also.

Not technically a US Domestic flight, but AC operates 333s daily between Montreal and Toronto, which is a 272 NM trip. Again, that's hub to hub though.

A couple of years ago, UA operated a scheduled 764 on IAD-EWR. I enjoyed it a few times.

I believe daily (or close to it), they also operate a 763 as one of the aircrafts between Toronto and Ottawa.

Very common to see 777s and 330s fly between YUL and YYZ.

I'd actually say that AC might be in the lead as far as intra-North American widebody ops. There are widebodies going between Halifax and Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto, between all three hubs all the time, and they operate quite a few WB flights between YVR and EWR and YYZ and SFO/LAX.

I would say that's UA, they have a dedicated fleet of 11 domestic 772s doing intra-NA flights on a daily basis, and that's in addition to any flights that are operated by international birds like, DEN/ORD-IAH and such.

Isn't that a tack-on though? Usually that's a flight to and from GVA, which exists almost exclusively because of the UN? (This is what justifies LX's only long-haul flight out of GVA, to JFK.)

While not USA-related, at least one IST-ADB flight in Turkey is on the B77W, likely for cargo purposes.

There's a daily ORD-EWR on a 777, great flight I always book it when coming home from Chicago on UA. The takeoff on that light of a 777 is awesome.

Oh boy here we go again...

This has been debated much here in the past.

Generally a 753 can be considered a heavy. The term is not used consistently by pilots but it is usually considered acceptable to use on a 753 due to its takeoff weight and strong wing vortices.

We're getting off track, but IINM the FAA rescinded the reclassification of 757s that occurred ~2010. Of course, the MTOW of the 753 is well more than 255,000 pounds.

Back in 2007 I flew LAX-SFO on a 744 that was swapped in at the last minute. Less than 50 pax. That takeoff was awesome.

Northwest used to run this with multiple DC-10’s weekly and the occasional 747. Always full with Company traffic.

Not heavy, But I was once stranded in SJC to fly to DEN on UA.
And UA announced that since incoming flight is going to be too late, they are running a repositioning flight from SFO to SJC.
It did show up and turned out to be old initial UA 727 lot. What a pleasure.
This was in late 90s.

They operate 777s (and A330s for that matter) on IST-AYT and IST-ESB as well. UX also flies an A330/787 daily on the MAD-BCN run.

That is... until I tell you how I was on a HA 763 between HNL-OGG about 2 years ago. It was a scheduled flight that allowed HA to position the 767 in OGG for their OGG-PDX flight.

Additionally, HA was running the 332 between HNL and KOA for a while after HND service was announced because KOA’s FIS wasn’t complete.

Yes there was the 333 on YHZ-YUL last summer, but the widebody route will revert back in June to the traditional YYZ-YHZ with a 763. Currently YHZ is without any domestic widebody service. Ironically YUL-YHZ is presently seeing Rouge, mainline, Sky Regional and Jazz at the same time due to the MAX grounding.

I think it’s safe to say that for years now YOW-YYZ is/has been shortest route in North America with regularly scheduled widebody service on it. Daily 763 (6x weekly in winter), with occasional 787 and 777 upgauges...usually after a snow or thunderstorm.

Nowadays in the US, SFO-LAX might be the shortest.

Yes there is.... I had posted earlier who would be the first to chime in on who USED to fly a widebody on the shortest flight. The topic is who CURRENTLY TODAY flies the shortest domestic heavy flight. Previous history shows that these threads can go on and on if everyone posts and reminisces about the past...To cut threw the chase, in the past with daily consistent scheduled service the winner was MIA-FLL ...
