USA Northeast Convective Activity Wednesday May 29th

Wed May 29, 2019 3:38 pm

The "interesting diversions" thread is inevitable so I thought I'd post here in advance.

Yesterday was an ugly day in the northeast but it was a warmup for this afternoon. Mere child's play.

The morning is already IFR throughout the northeast with the usual suspects having 3 hour EDCTS.

Looking at the forecasts, it will easily be the worst day of this season so far and probably one of the worst of the year.

A slow moving system with tops in the 40s will develop over the next few hours and stretch from North Jersey to PIT and another piece of the system over Kentucky a few hundred miles long towards DFW. Late afternoon and moving to early evening, forecast to move slowly southeast directly across DC/PHL/NYC.

Flightaware shows SWA and AA each having canceled 400+ flights already.

The usual popular satellite airports should see some diversions today...here's your heads up!

Flying into EWR today. Looks like it's going to be a fun ride!

Only 2 AA cancellations for PVD so far. Sadly, we don’t seem to get as many diversions as the airport could handle.

AA has already issued a weather waiver for DFW. Storms later today into evening,
although we already have pockets of heavy rain breaking out in parts
of DFW metro

UA 787-10 from LAX-EWR diverted to BDL. First time a 787 has been at BDL?

i'd say it's the first time a 78X has been at BDL. it's depressing that seeing a BDL-EWR flight listed gets me excited since UA dropped the route.

I think this is the winner.

SFO-EWR.

Pax would have been on the jet for a little more than 11 hours unless they briefly deplaned at IAD before heading back for the recovery leg.

Wow. Over 7 hours SFO to IAD. 2 hours 40 minutes from initial descent until they landed in IAD. That is a lot of holding

United 787-10 from TLV-EWR visited BOS today, and a TAP A330NEO diverted from EWR as well, here's a cool video of the landings! I believe the first visit for both types to Boston.

Funny that I noticed this flight on flight aware when I was looking at a different plane that did a 90 degree turn at altitude over Pocatello ,ID (where I was at the time).
The turning flight was a EUG-DEN UA trip but I also clicked up the SFO-EWR flight too lol.

Flew CLT-EWR on AA yesterday and got in about an hour before they hit. It was already a cluster with delays and canx’s then...I shudder to think how bad it got last night.

EWR had a 30 minute and 90 minute window when they had no arrivals. Two hours of no arrivals caused the diversions. Once those happen, the rest of the night is doomed to 5 hour inbound delays.

United has some residual cancellations but the bigger problem is the international departures to Europe were almost all late. Many were over 2 hours late which will have a residual effect today with missed connections and they try to recover.
