Will DFW ever get 12:00am+(23:00) long haul departure?

Fri May 31, 2019 5:29 pm

It’s seems like DFW is the only airport out of all the top 10 busiest airports in the US that doesn’t have a long haul passengers flight that departed 23:00+.For those who have been alive way longer then me has DFW had departures that late?

Korean Air used to have a late departure from DFW. KE036 when it was shared with ATL in 2001 departed DFW for ICN after midnight. If I remember correctly, KE032 originally departed before midnight after the flight was separated from ATL and before changing to a late morning/early afternoon departure. If I can locate my old timetables I might can get exact timings.

The upcoming DFW-DUB flight will depart at 23:05

CLT, which I think is #10 doesn't have a long haul departure after 23:00 as well.

Same with DEN?...

2300 hours is 11 PM. 12:00 AM (midnight) is 00:00

DFW's location in the middle of the U.S. - and importantly, in the Central Time Zone - means that any departures within the U.S. at midnight would mean a 2:00 - 3:00 AM arrival time in most places on the East Coast (DTW, MIA, TPA, ATL, DCA, PHL, NYC, BOS), which is not a desirable arrival time, and an after midnight arrival time on the west coast as well. Either direction, this would require an arriving bank of flights to connect with for maximum utilization.

International flights to Europe will leave earlier in the day. They always have, and they always will.

Asia flights, however, could be the ones to give DFW this departure time. Look at IAH's Asia flights - Air China departs at 1:00 AM, arriving before sunrise at PEK. But that flight is only scheduled this way because of the arrival time in China.

I feel like AA could've applied for a red-eye DFW-HND slot, but they would lose out on SA connections.

Aside from the interesting 23:05 DFW-DUB departure time, every other Europe flight aside from the last LHR flight leaves in the early-mid afternoon.

Reason for the late departure ex DFW is due to lack of gate availability in DUB earlier in the day.

Ah, makes sense. Was surprised to see it moved from the original 20:35 departure.

I had forgotten about the upcoming non-stop to DUB.

The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland are one hour behind most of central Europe, hence why a very late departure is possible to both LHR and DUB, with arrival times in the early afternoon:

dp DFW 11:05 PM
ar DUB 1:50 PM

dp DUB 3:45 PM
ar DFW 7:45 PM

Looks like only one frame is needed per rotation, and the return time allows for connections westbound, albeit a bit tight.

I totally agree with you.......I think that the thread title should be changed again by the OP as it's worded terribly!

There are several LHR departures after "late afternoon". AA78 @ 19.05, AA80 @ 21.20 and BA192 @ 21.55. I usually prefer using AA80 & BA192 as DFW Terminal D is not busy at check-in, security or lounges. The only other departure form D around that time is to LIM. Those later departures also arrive into LHR around lunch time UK which is great for clearing customs and immigration.

QF8 A380 to SYD has also reverted to 22.25 departure.

Looks like the thread was originally about the Emirates A380 drone footage but was changed last minute.

Wouldn’t this be better discussed in the DFW discussion thread? Do we really need a new thread for every topic regarding DFW we can think of?
We don’t care what your next flight is.

Really wish DFW had a midnight-ish departure to NRT, HKG, TPE, or ICN. I love going to Asia but hate having to take a day off work to catch a 10am flight.

That's a weird objection, since those are all 13-16 hour flights, so you're just taking the next day off of work, instead....
Besides, local arrival would be terrible at 2-5am , and badly timed for connections (which is precisely why they leave when they do).

Leaving in the morning day 1 and arriving late on day 2 is basically a waste of 2 days.

By leaving really late on day 1 and arriving really early on day 3, I only waste 1 day. I still have all day 1 and day 3 to do things like work (day 1) or explore (day 3).

You could leave Dallas at 1-2am and arrive in Tokyo at 4-5am. This allows people to connect into DFW all day (including late flights after work) and people to connect out of Tokyo on the early bank of flights. Not to mention it's a lot easier to sleep overnight vs an awful boring 11am-3pm day time flight.

You're suggesting the same flight times as the first wave of HND flights operated & imploded at.

When was that? I've only been in the DFW area for about 4 years.
