Should UA build a Polaris Lounge at PVG?

Tue Jun 04, 2019 3:40 am

If HKG has it, why PVG don't deserve a UA lounge?

1. PVG has 2 daily SFO, 1 daily EWR(will soon be 2 daily from 2020), 1 daily LAX, 1 daily ORD; while HKG only has 3 daily departure(SFO, EWR, ORD) and 5 weekly GUM
2.PVG has more premium travellers for UA compare to what HKG does.

Two very different markets - arguably HKG's premium traffic is a much more mature market. PVG competition includes the likes of Air China's mediocre Biz/First lounges or China Eastern's massive but extremely poor attention to detail new lounge. Neither of those two come close to Cathay's offerings in HKG, and additionally Cathay's current PVG lounge is being rebuilt because of how awful it was before.

If the market doesn't require the high cost investment / won't draw disproportionate share with Polaris dining / service, why pay the very significant costs to build and operate such a product?

There is no Polaris lounge in HKG. There is a UA Club. Even NRT does not have a Polaris lounge.

For the Club at HKG dates back to opening of the airport and when UA had far more flights including SIN, BKK, NRT etc

Also UA is a contract lounge for several airlines in HKG so obviously there is a cost offset as well.

One small point, HKG-GUM pax will not qualify for the Polaris lounge if it ever does get built. While there are partner lounges in HKG, UA has still elected to operate their own, the economics must work out.

In PVG the Polaris lounge would have to accept other Star passengers in long haul J under the current rules, and there are a slew of them at PVG: LH, NZ, ET, OS, LX, SK, CA and AC. United would end up operating the lounge more for other carriers, the opposite of what happens in their US hubs. My guess is the cost of Polaris compared to partnering with CA must be high and yields in China are not great at the moment. Agree with you the number of flights seems enough though.

AFAIK there are no plans for a Polaris lounge neither at PVG nor HKG.

Besides LHR, If a Polaris lounge is to be built overseas I'd do it in FRA, if AC operates its own lounge in FRA I don't see why UA can't. My opinion.
