Is it possible to fly South America-Asia non-stop?

Wed Jun 05, 2019 1:58 am

Is it possible for one to like let's say fly GRU-NRT non-stop? Can aircraft like the A350-900ULR or 1000ULR do it?

That's pushing the definition of 'Asia' a bit...

I think if you mean East Asia you should specify that. There's a big difference between flying to TLV which is on the western edge of Asia and flying to Japan.

You could not fly from South America non stop to Japan.

Not sure of any definition which puts PTY in South America.

As does EK on DXB-GRU and GIG along with QR on DOH-GRU.

Last I check, Dubai and Doha are both in Asia. :duck:

LATAM and CX have a code-share in OneWorld on the shortest possible routes between South America & HKG both west and east bound. LATAM flies GRU-JNB, CX flies JNB-HKG. On the west-coast LATAM flies SCL-MEL, CX flies MEL-HKG. They will soon fly SCL-SYD (in addition to the existing SCL-AKL-SYD) and CX flies AKL/SYD-HKG. The routes via North America takes hours longer and Europe/Middle East is about the same (fastest).

Given it's quite a distance further than SIN - EWR if it could do SIN-GRU it would have to be in an ultra premium configuration. Can't quite see any business case for that.

BOG-NRT for instance is shorter than a handful of currently operating flights.

Whether it would ever make money.....

Also if transiting the USA is a problem due to the hassle of the visa, you can transit International to International via North America in Canada or Mexico. Air Canada and all the Asian carriers serve YYZ/YUL/YVR plus Aeromexico/COPA/Avianca and Aeromexico flies MEX-NRT/ICN/PVG (ICN west-bound stops in MTY and PVG in TIJ due to MEX's high elevation). NH (Air Nippon Airways) also flies MEX-NRT. HU (Hainan Airlines) flies MEX-TIJ-PEK and CZ (China Southern) flies MEX-YVR-CAN. From MEX all the Latin carriers fly southbound.

Unless something really weird happened in the last 24 hours, I believe São Paulo is still in South America... so the South America to Asia point still stands.

You also have to take into considering costs. I've done the route before and usually the route via the USA is the cheapest followed by Canada/Europe/Middle East/South Africa/Mexico City (HU/CZ) then Mexico City (NH/AM) then South Pacific/Oceania (LA/NZ/QF). Flying Australia/New Zealand to South America is really expensive due to the requirement of ETOPS 330 and the traditional players LATAM & Qantas (OneWorld) charge high prices but the addition of Air New Zealand on AKL-EZE has added some competition a bit.

Well I was talking about the distance, even if some place is in the same continent or even in the same country does not means it can fly to the same destination. There is a direct flight between Perth and London but no direct flight between Sydney and London.

Altitude at BOG may squash any chance.

If by "quite a distance" you mean 360nm, then sure.... but for an aircraft with an advertised range of 9700nm with a mid-density configuration, it could be done with the configuration that SQ has now, even while knocking off a good 10%+ for winds/etc.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

My apologies, thats what I get for using Wikipedia Though since Brazil is still in South America, the answer is still the same.

I'm going to assume that the OP is referring East/Southeast Asia, since there are already routes between S.America and Asia.
Is it possible? Yes, absolutely. Is it commercially feasible? That's debatable with current aircraft.
About the only route that I could ever see happen in this context is SQ flying SIN-GRU with their A359ULR.

True, forgot to factor that in.

Anyway, even if both were at sea-level, can't see that ever working on pax numbers alone

So something like SCL-PVG? That's 10160 nm, about 20 or 21 hours nonstop.

An ACJ A359ULR could do that, perhaps. Or an older WB with more aux fuel tanks and less payload.
