AC future routes out of YVR

Thu Jun 06, 2019 3:07 am

YVR has reached a major milestone in their expansion project of Pier D but the article also mentioned that the president of AC in Western Canada discussed about AC's future network out of YVR. They are looking at expansion plans internationally but wouldn't specify which new routes could work from YVR. I also noticed that they have all their long haul aircrafts except for two A330's on order. With most of their long haul frames already being used, what could AC add from their YVR hub in either trans-pacific or Europe?

My guesses:

MEL daily from 4x weekly
SIN 4x weekly unless SQ adds YVR with their A350-900
AMS Summer Seasonal 5x weekly

Not knowing the market well (but I do connect in Vancouver to Asia occasionally) - I gotta imagine SIN being the next potential big add.

Also, I believe they are daily to DEL. Any chance of BLR?

AC should focus on expanding or increasing frequencies in China and Japan.
BLR would not be a great option for AC to start service, unless it launches a flight timed perfectly for onward connections to SFO or SEA, with Japan Airlines launching BLR-NRT next year, there will be an increased competition on the small market.

There are no easy choices to make for new destinations from YVR. SIN traffic is limited and the distance is long. More China would be great but due to present political climate and the many Chinese carriers in YVR, maybe not now. SYD does well, BNE less so but MEL does not warrant daily service yet. And there is heavy competition from California to consider as well. Summer AMS may be a good choice but of course limited Star connections there. MNL likely would have the traffic required but a fare-war with PR may occur. If PR would join Star, that would be helpful.

SIN could be a possibility depending on how well the new SEA route works out.

Vancouver has relatively few European flights, many Asian flights, no African flights, no Middle East flights, and three Australian flights. I'm wondering if there's a market for AKL services (in addition to NZ) or perhaps a service to a secondary large European city like MAN or DUS. If there's range then an IST or DXB is a missing super hub.

Expand Pier D in YVR? Don't get it. I am flying around there regularly and find that most gates there are empty most of the time. I am just not under impression there is shortage of international gates at YVR. U.S. section though could obviously use some more room (and another lounge there).

Last summer it was 2 gates short for Pier D between 10am and 2pm.. and it was already expanded to the max.

D50 - D76 were used for departures.
C48, C49, and a few E gates were also used for international arrivals.

I believe C47 is now also a widebody gates.. I wonder if it will be used for international arrivals this year.

Would love to see ZRH going year-round.

Also see a lot of traffic from Spain every time I do FRA or MUC-YVR, but a seasonal MAD or BCN is a long shot due to the almost unexistant Star presence in Spain.

AC are adding AKL from DEC19 through March 20 4 weekly 788.

BKK would be a nice addition, but with all the Chinese airlines selling $400 one-stops, any TPAC to BKK would never be a reality.
