Creative and cool airline name ideas

Thu Jun 06, 2019 5:07 pm

What are some great airline names that you can think of?
For me, I have two. Magentair, for an airline with a purple livery, and South Central, an airline based in the southern states.
This might be a bit of an irrelevant topic, but it’s always interesting to get ideas.

For an LCC, I always fancied the name Sheep. When you pronounce it, it sounds similar to "cheap", which is what you expect from an LCC. And it would instantly give the airline a theme, a logo, etc.

The airline, or the passengers (sheeple)?

Alness Airways...yours truly! ;)
In the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo movie, the whole crew rides an airline called "Spooky Air," complete with monster livery.

While not so “creative” per se (although I love the livery) is Azul from Brazil. Yes, it comes from the founder of JetBlue, and Azul is his second baby, I think it has potential decades from now to be Brazil’s flagship given LATAM is shared between Chile & Brazil (perhaps others) - Azul has laid the foundation for a pleasant and easy Portuguese word easily understood and said in any western language, speaks to the blue waters of the country with the world’s longest usable shoreline. Blue skies and premium like the Brazilian blue gem stones.- along the same line “Gol” which is designed to sound like “GOOOOOL!” in futeball/soccer is fun when you connect the dots to the scream during a Brazilian futeball game. Great local name.

Personally I preferred the simple genus of USAir and laughed out loud over the CEO’s rationale of “U S AIRWAYS” as it sounding more like “British Airways” giving them more stature as the expanded to Europe.

“Song” was a joke, only made worse by putting “by Delta” under it. Totally defeated the purpose But even if that short lived trend of a MAJOR creating a LCC - “Ted” from UniTED was very clever.

I’ve ALWAYS loved the oddball acronym names that became super famous but very few knew the what they actually meant:

Qantas
Sabina
VARIG
TAAG
TAP
Lufthansa
Tariom (I assume was an acronym)
PamAm
Avianca
EVA (have no clue what EVA means)

And I always liked the name Garuda (not an acronym but nice) and Mexicana!

Can't think of any great name ideas at the moment.

But for what it's worth I can think of some pretty terrible ones...and they are all real...... SCAT, FAT, Okay Airways, Vanilla, Wizz Air, Israir, Spantax, Suckling, etc.

If a.netters had an airline, they would name it:
WidebodyPTV Airlines

One person would argue for an all-B764 fleet with pink livery and pink seats.
We don’t care what your next flight is.

SparkAir seems like a good name for a LCC/ULCC startup.

Thanks, that made me laugh out loud!
“Suckling?” Really? Where were they from? I must Google that. And “SCAT” - seriously must not be from an English speaking country.

In branding, when you need to develop a name, the hardest part of doing the legal checks is the “culturally appropriate and slang” searches. Really, after the Internet there are very, very few “clean” names, so you’re often forced to come up with unusual “coined” names (like Zappos or Lululemon) And checking for Slang can be very difficult to discover, AND if you do, it is NEVER EVER MEANS SOMETHING GOOD. It always comes up meaning something REALLY BAD.
Many years ago we once worked on an Iced Cappuccino in a bottle brand for a big American food company. The final name was “Cappio” and it cleared all the major western languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish...however in Puerto Rican Spanish only a “Cappio” was a “male prostitute” in local slang. It was not caught because you cannot check EVERY Spanish speaking country. The company who made it had to pull it off the shelves immediately because in San Juan they were either dying with laughter or sending in angry letters.
Clearly that must have been the case with “SCAT” (I can already see the livery!)

One of the most famous goofs (as most people know) was the Chevrolet “Nova” car. Nobody at GM figured out that in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages (Spanish) that it meant “No Go” - I have always wondered “didn’t someone at GM speak Spanish?”
