US Airports with US military bases

Fri Jun 07, 2019 4:48 am

A thread about CHS got me wondering about this.

Are there any US airports with US military installations integrated/sharing the airfield? The only ones I can think of are CHS with Charleston AFB and GRK with Gray Army Air Field.

Im not talking about airports that happen to have ANG or reserve units, but those are welcome in the conversation; im talking about active duty military installations.

Just wondering :)
When wasn't America great?

Eglin AFB and VPS.
Peterson AFB and COS
Scott AFB and BLV
MCAS Yuma and YUM
Bergstrom AFB and AUS, but I don't think that counts.

The list will be a lot longer if you count Air National Guard units based at the local airport.

Fort Leonard Wood and TBN? Not sure if FLW uses the airfield or not but they are adjacent to each other and TBNs service is mostly for military.

JAX, FAT, TUS, PHX, CLT, RNO, BOI, FWA, TUL, SWF, SYR, FSD all have guard bases I believe. I’m sure there are others besides these and those already listed

Here’s a list of all the joint use airports owned by the DoD, but not all have commercial service.

Robert Gray Army Airfield... just to be a little more precise, although locally we call it Gray.
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

I used to see a lot of military aircraft fly in and out of PHF a lot a few years ago. Don’t know if they still do

As mentioned above HNL shares facilities with the Air Force at HIK as well as a Air National Guard facility.

MSN and MKE can be added to the list of dual purpose airports. I believe MSN was actually one of the few ANG stations selected to first receive F-35s.

Would LMT count? They have no scheduled service anymore but they are an alternate for military and have a military detachment there. I have seen military here at OTH when they fly cargo down from JBLM. PDT was a training base for Doolittle Raiders and that whole area has military from JBLM and Fairchild flying training missions.
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

Outside of the US there was a major USAF base at Rhein-Main air base at Frankfurt airport which was open until 2005.

MCO began as a civilian airport which was then leased by the Air Force, which renamed it McCoy Air Force Base which is where the MCO designator comes from. McCoy remained active until 1975 side-by-side with numerous Eastern, Delta, National and Southern departures each day, including numerous widebodies. The civilian portion was renamed McCoy Jetport.

When I was very young, my family flew into MCO, which was still using the converted missile maintenance hangar as a terminal. I can still remember as our National 727-200 taxied in and the flight attendant announced, “National Airlines would like to welcome you to the McCoy Jetport...” It all sounded so futuristic...until we deplaned by stairs into the converted hangar, and arrived at “baggage claim,” which was little more than a long shelf on which the luggage was displayed.

Hickham even has its own LOCID, PHIK as did Rhein-Main, ETAF. Skybus used KCEF, Westover.

For the Active Duty you forgot GRK for Killeen/Ft. Hood Regional Airport and Robert Gray Army Airfield.

Also, not Air Force but RIC has elements of the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment of the Virginia Army National Guard.
