Best window seat for views per airport (landing)

Fri Jun 07, 2019 7:22 pm

Hello all,

I have done a brief search and have not found a thread dedicated to this topic.
I guess like most, when i chose a window seat, I like to chose a seat with the best views (not just of the aircraft haha) on finals.

I know winds can change things very often, but I am sure I am not the only one willing to take a chance...
For example:

DCA: D seats (views of DC monuments or Old Town)
NCE: A seats (eastbound landing views of the coast: Golfe de Saint Tropez, Cannes, Synopolis)
SAN: A seats (incredible views of downtown in the last 30 seconds before touchdown)

What are yours??

Also, I will be flying into HNL and ANC very soon, which side would you chose?

Although I understand what you are talking about, I think you should be more generic in referring to the seats; I.e. a window seat on the left side of the aircraft or a window seat on the right side of the aircraft.

On some aircraft configurations, a D seat is an aisle seat; sometimes it is a middle seat.

Choose left window seat for SYD. If the aircraft lands from the north, the view of Sydney, especially the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House is amazing.

Winds do change things so any recommendations are just best guess. Probably right side for HNL, nice city views on right downwind for the 8s. Left side for KOA, normal approach is straight in for 17; new visitors on right side are stretching out the seatbelts to look left.

MIA/FLL - Right side. A majority of arrivals to these airports follow the coastline. Some very nice views.
LGA - Usually the left side.
LAX - Right side.
SFO - Both sides are good. I prefer the left side. For those who get nervous thinking the plane is about to land in the water, may I suggest an aisle seat. :D

AUS: right side for views of downtown
DCA: left side for views of the Capital and monuments if landing from the north
LAS: right side for views of the Strip if landing from the north
SEA: left side for views of Mt Rainier
SLC: right side for views of the Great Salt Lake, if landing from the north
ZQN: either side for views of the mountains

Agreed, always A seats for the tourist view into SYD. Even if coming on 34L or R you get views of the coast rather than the ocean.

LGA is a crapshoot, but I would say maybe the left side about 2/3 of the time for a great view of Manhattan & Statue of Liberty. But when the plane flies north above the Hudson the view from the right side is breathtaking.

Depends on what you prefer to see. I am not interested in landscape, Panorama (when landing in FRA and sitting on the right side (west wind conditions) I can see my office. ) but I am a huge fan of corrosion corners....

... and that's why I prefer the right side because you can see the ex Air Afrique DC 8 during take-off roll...

I will add some more examples later...

I like sitting by the window. For me it doesn't matter which way.

Of course it depends on which runway, but some are more predictable than others.

  • LHR - Right hand side gives best views of London for the more common Westbound arrival. Landing Eastbound, you get a view of Windsor Castle out of the left hand side, but otherwise not much difference
  • SIN - Left hand side usually has the views of the city
  • EDI - I usually try and sit on the left for nice views of the Firth of Forth
  • ORD - Left hand side gives views of the city when coming in from the lake
  • JFK - When travelling TATL I like to sit on the right to look at the beaches on Long Island, plus a better view of icebergs, Greenland etc. on the way if it's a Northern routing

Then there are airports in the mountains like SLC or INN where you are guaranteed a great view on either side!
