Longest flight where same aircraft turns around in the same calendar day?

Tue Jun 11, 2019 3:58 pm

In another thread, user Melb94 commendably found the following schedule
during 2010-2011 for MH's operations into Argentina:

Kuala Lumpur – Cape Town – Buenos Aires 2 weekly 747-400 service
MH201 KUL0130 – 0715CPT0855 – 1330EZE 744 37
MH202 EZE2220 – 1100+1CPT1230+1 – 0540+2KUL 744 37

As can be seen, the flight leaves on Wednesdays and Sundays from KUL, and not only reaches EZE the same calendar day, but also the returning flight leaves the same calendar day, using the same aircraft. This flight doesn't operate anymore, of course, but I am curious: Is there or was there a longer flight than this, where the outbound and the inbound (from its final destination) flights left on the same calendar day, USING THE SAME AIRCRAFT? This flight was a total of 8601 nm, so longer than PER-LON or any transpacific flight. Logic has it that it must be a flight leaving just after midnight from the Far East or Australia/NZ.

I remember KL747s doing AMS-IAH-AMS in a day, the same aircraft 7 days a week.
Just enough time inbetween flights to off-load, check-fix, drain, clean, refuel, cater, load cargo, pax, crew.
Pretty efficient operation :)

Currently Air China's flights to the South/Central America fits this bill

CA-907 PEK 12.55am 6.55am MAD 8.45am 1.45pm GRU
CA-908 GRU 6.05pm 8.40am+1 MAD 12.00pm 4.45am+2 PEK

CA-879 PEK 12.40pm 1.20pm YUL 3.20pm 7.35pm HAV
CA-880 HAV 9.50am 1.20pm YUL 3.20pm 5.00pm+1 PEK

CA-885 PEK 9.20am 10.00am IAH 12.30pm 4.30pm PTY
CA-886 PTY 6.30pm 10.15pm IAH 1.00am 4.50am+1 PEK

Before Singapore Airlines adjusted their SIN-BCN-GRU schedule service which began in March 2011
(which ended in October 2016), it flew this schedule:

SQ-068 SIN 12.40am 8.20am BCN 9.30am 3.55pm GRU
SQ-069 GRU 1.45am 5.35pm BCN 6.45pm 1.35pm SIN+1 (starting March 2011)

However by October 2012, Singapore Airlines changed the schedule until the route was axed in October 2016. Therefore this route does not apply to MalevTU134's question.

SQ-068 SIN 11.45pm 6.45am+1 BCN 8.05am+1 4.15pm GRU
SQ-069 GRU 5.45pm 7.10am+1 BCN 9.15am+1 5.00am+2 SIN

That second example of the CA flights (Havana) wouldn't fit the bill if the times are correct. 735p arrival in Havana; 905AM departure from Havana. Neither would the first EK example...arrive SCL 845pm...depart SCL 115AM.

For using the same aircraft criteria.

QF15 BNE LAX 1020 0600 789 Daily
QF11 LAX JFK 0820 1640 789 Daily
QF12 JFK LAX 1810 2100 789 Daily
QF16 LAX BNE 2320 0605+2 789 Daily

There is a flight number change for the LAX-JFK-LAX tag on but it is operated by the same aircraft. The total distance BNE-LAX-JFK is 8,374 nm, and BNE-LAX-JFK-LAX is 10,524nm.

If you were to change the criteria to using the same pair of flight numbers then you could say QF11/12 SYD-LAX-JFK-LAX. Which is slightly longer but there is an aircraft change in LAX.

NZ26 AKL-ORD is 15hrs same day departs AKL at 2210, and arrives at 1705 at the same day.

Ironically on the ORD-AKL sector which is 16h30m you arrive back in AKL two days after you left e.g leave Friday night and arrive Sunday morning
