What is Your Favorite Wide Body Aircraft and Why?

Sun Jun 16, 2019 5:55 am

Just a question out of curiosity, not a poll per se, just looking for your thoughts. What is your favorite wide body aircraft? Your answer can be by any criteria you choose. Passenger comfort, IFE, appearance, technology....whatever.

I am certain there will be a diverse range of opinions. I would really like to know what you think and why.

A330 family.

- Configuration is commonly arranged in a 2-4-2 allowing a good access to the aisle for those seated in the windows/middle.
- Nice wing view, and I love the curved wingtip on the neo.
- Usually very modern with good interiors/IFEs.
- Probably has the most smoothest landings with the help of its landing gears.

Historically, L-1011 since it was my favorite aircraft of my childhood and I loved its look and its interior design. As I got older I appreciated it even more for the marvel of engineering it was at the time.

These days, as a frequent flyer, it is a toss-up between the 787 and A350. I really like the cabin environments of both aircraft and I think I may be one of the few fans of the dimming windows. Many flights if you are on the south side of the airplane, the sun is too aggressive to keep the window shade open and you overheat with a typical window shade. The 787 window can dim so you can still enjoy the great view without baking. I also like the large size of the 787 window.

The 767 has also had some of my most favorite flight experiences and I love its layout in both business and economy. If you haven’t had the opportunity, fly like an ANA, JAL, or Air Do 767 in economy. It is wonderful. So spacious, highly cushioned seats, and very clean. The Air Do 767 in particular is like a time capsule. Projector screen and vintage fabrics and everything. Amazing on board service for a LCC.

A350, it's comfortable to fly on, I like the way it looks, and it has the capability to fly routes like LAX-SYD with a full passenger payload.

As a customer: the 767. Nothing beats 2-3-2. Minor drawback is its slow cruising speed of M0.80 resulting in about 20 minutes extra flight time on longhaul compared to other aircraft.
Second place for the 380, because of the ride quality an quietness inside.
Last place for the 777. Awesome plane, but just too darn noisy inside. And 3-4-3 in what was initially designed as a 9-abreast plane does not help.

As a pilot: the 744, for all its mega redundant systems.

Agreed!

For me the upcoming 777-X.

The most beautiful, the biggest, and best cabin that allows a heavy 7-abreast in business class lie-flat.

I'll say that the 380 is by far the best passenger experience for me. Particularly on the upper deck if you get a window seat with the storage bins, even in economy.

Other than that, especially in premium cabins, I'd say the actual seat and things like IFE is so much more important than the aircraft that I notice it a lot more from a paxex POV.

As a passenger, based solely on aircraft and not seat/service:

For now, A330ceo. So quiet. Beats the extremely noisy 777 and 787 by miles.
Looking forward to trying the A350 and A380 soon. Have been told they are even better.

In terms of cabin quality, condition and fittings:
A330 and 777 are the best, looking good even after 20 years. The A330 is slightly better because it has air ducts over the seats.
The 787 is the worst. Feels like it was built using cheap, low quality plastic that will be falling apart after a mere 2 or 3 years. Entire plane rattles like mad during taxi.

In terms of seat and service, the Swiss 777 business class. But I believe those have also been put in the A330.

The A380 any day of the week and twice on sundays. Nothing else comes even close as far as pax comfort is concerned.

A380, quiet and comfortable, than A340 and A330 (2-4-2). I have not flown the A350. 787 only at BA, I did not like it, to cramped. Every 777 I have flown was noisy. 767 is OK.

As a passenger it's A380 followed by A330 and B767
For the bottom it's B777 to noisy and dreadfull 3-4-3 seating it's only beaten by B787.
The most funny flight was with Swiss MD11
The best looking aircraft is the A340-500
Followed by the B747-400

In economy, it is 787-8 in the bulkhead or A340 anywhere else. I haven't had the chance to be in an A350 or A380 yet, so looking forward to that later this year. From outside, A350-900 is the best looking in my opinion - those twisted winglets and the sharp nose looks great.

772.... because reasons.

I think for me, it was the newest kid on the block when I was just a small child just starting to get into aviation. It was a game changer and is the best looking aircraft in my opinion. I find it to comfortable, even at 10 abreast.

The 764 is a close second for me. Like s sleeker 772 ;)

The 747,

It will always be my favorite, the smooth ride, spacious cabin, speed and sheer grandeur can’t be touched by any other aircraft, now or in the future

My very first memory of flying was on a BOAC 747-100, and it started a lifetime love of this magnificent aircraft

My only regret is not flying it at my airline when I had the seniority to hold an FO slot

the 777, especially on 3-7 hour sectors.
I flew an A359 on an redeye flight to HND and it was a pain in the arse to recover because the seats on it are slimline seats.
And on the way back from CTS, I got a 19 year old 773A back to BKK and it was much better than the outbound flight just because the seats aren't slimline seats, albeit with early 2000s Panasonic eX2 PTVs.

A380 for me too, for all the reasons previously mentioned.

A350 is second for me on flying experience.

For sentimental reasons the 747 and L1011 too.

In general, it's the A380 for me due to the engineering, passenger comfort, and just the sheer awe of it all. For looks, it is the A350-1000. As a pilot, the A330 is my favorite aircraft that I have flown to this day. I will say that I was surprised and kinda disappointed when I took my first 787 flight, it was surprisingly loud and wasn't built nearly as well as previous Boeings that I had flown. As for the A350, I had my first A350 flight in March to Seoul via Detroit, and on the return we flew non-stop with Korean Air on the A380. While I think our Delta flight was better(though I may be biased) the A380 I think offers a superior overall experience compared to the A350
I have no special talents, just a passion for flying

For me, 787, for the windows and cabin altitude / humidity. The 767 would probably come in second for the 2-3-2 layout. I would like to like the A330's but it seems every time I get on one, I am stuck with a gigantic underseat box for the IFE and I can't stretch my feet or put my laptop bag there. (I hate stowing my bag overhead with a passion, I want it where I can get at it.) The few times I've been in an unobstructed A330 seat it's been a nice ride.

Bigger bins mean nothing to me. I ride up front, I usually have an entire bin to myself. It's just more empty space.
Faster? On a ~13 hour flight between Asia and Europe, winds, airspace closures and routings will amount to much greater variations/delays. And as I noted, both the 777 and 787 are really noisy beasts, and much more so than the pleasently quiet A330.
I've had a few long flights on the 737MAX and A319LR this year, and I would say I preferred those to the 787.

As an ATR pilot, I can assure you that cheap cabin furnishings will come back to bite operators in the rear. I know, because ATR used to be the champions at that. What I've experienced on the 787 did not impress me at all. And definitely not when cabin crew try to solve the rattling by stuffing wads of tissue paper and napkins into corners and gaps - on a 2 year old plane!

Laughable. The most bumpy flights I've ever had were on 787s. At least as a pilot I know better than blaming the aircraft.
Biggest windows, sure, but again I'd much rather sacrifice those and have a quiet cabin to have a good nights sleep in - something that has so far been much more easy on a 20 year old A330.

I've only been on a few widebodies in recent memory. I preferred the A330 to the B777 (10 across), mostly because of the wider seats.

Loved the L-1011. Looks, interior, tech, and sound. Flew it on Delta TPA -ATL
Second would be the A332. Flew it on US Airways from MCO -CLT
Least favorite was the DC-10 that I flew MCO - DTW on Northwest in 2000. It was very worn down, dated and likely near retirement when I was on it. But I’m thankful I got to take at least one ride in the good ol DC-10

For wide body quads I TOTALLY agree about the A340-500. Perfectly proportioned IMHO with those beautiful engines. Tied with that is the 748-i - that extended upper deck and those huge engines just make a sexy airplane even sexier. All other variants of the 747 are A VERY close second. :-)

Regarding tri-engined wide bodies hands down thre L1011. Hi tech, sleek, powerful, gorgeous. Gosh I wish the sky was still flush with them (along with the DC-10 and MD-11 as well).

But to say that the 787 is bad I have some doubts...

I base it on my own experience. I will note that all my colleagues back me up on these points.

I will make up my opinion in due time based on own experience with the real thing, thank you.

But the 777 has bigger bins than the A330/A340 combo
He is flying higher, faster and quieter, being a much better neighbor than the twin engine of the Airbus. IMHO

Too bad you forgot that the 787 Dreamliner is exceptionally smoothly in flight and have biggest windows in the market

IMHO, you strike me as a bit of a fanboy. Your obvious username doesn't help.

What are you telling?

The 787 modern aircraft with anti noise coatings. I can not believe you.

I prefer to believe the YouTuber Non Stop Dan.

And next time when you ride a 787 Dreamliner, avoid sitting near the engines if possible.
It will stop me from being a fanboy ...
;)

The 787 is a quieter aircraft than the A330, and certainly much more so than the god-forsaken 737 and 777, but having flown the A380 several times and the A350 for the first time a few months back, it's not on the same level, I certainly don't think that you can call it a quiet aircraft, except at the front, but not in the back, that's for sure.
I have no special talents, just a passion for flying

Historically the DC-10 and MD-11 are my favorites. They're just gorgeous planes and you can't beat the DC-10's takeoff sound.

As far as widebodies I can actually fly on right now, the A340-600 is my favorite. I just love how long and graceful it is.

The IL-96 is pretty cool too. Such an illusive bird and there's not much information out there on it which intrigues me.

In economy, the 767. Gotta love the 2-3-2 seat config.

In business, the 787. Higher humidity makes for more comfortable flight, quieter ride, and I like the electronic window shades.
