Flight a within one time zone that pass thru another

Tue Jul 02, 2019 1:39 pm

Since someone posted films on flights that crashed, i thought I’d start my own odd post.

Name markets within the same time zone that on a direct routing pass through another time zone.

Certain flights from GB to Portugal come to mind, if they overly Spanish airspace.

Depending on the routing, Nashville to say the Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis markets could make an appearance in eastern time.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Atlanta to Indianapolis and vice versa could cross the Central time zone.

BUE-IGR/PSS during summer Brazil has different time zone. Sometimes if routing is done through Argentina Paraguay is touched.
SLA-IGR, Paraguay is one hour less that Argentina.

Flights across Southeast Asia do this often - owing to Thailand, Indochina and Indonesia being in UTC+7 whilst Malaysia and Singapore being in UTC+8. Almost all Trans-Malaysian flights between the Peninsula and Borneo theoretically overfly the Indonesian timezone at some point.

Flights operating from KUL or SIN also operating beyond to destinations like Perth and HKG/China (UTC +8) also overfly Indonesia/Thailand/Vietnam (UTC +7)

Flights between Spokane and San Diego originate and land in the Pacific time zone, but often pass over the Mountain time zone in Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Arizona.

Depending on routing, LAS to Spokane might pass over parts of southern Idaho or the small portion of Mountain time in eastern Oregon.

I actually do not know how many flights there really are but if you fly south from siberia to SE asia you cross china and as the country only has one timezone you actually will fly through a different one. And if I am not mistaken vladivostok to sidney should pass one too, as japan is in another timezone as far as I remember. Might have no direct flights tho.

Singapore to China. Flights fly over Vietnam (or at least its waters) which are east of Singapore but one hour behind.

Any flights from DEN to Central America (BZE/LIR/PTY are currently nonstop) leave Mountain Time (GMT-6), overfly Central Time in Mexico (GMT-5) and land in CA (GMT-6).

Additionally, a straight-line HNL-PPT leaves GMT-10, crosses over the International Date Line to GMT+14, and back to land in PPT at GMT-10. That's technically a 24h change during flight.

Strange thing is that Mexico and Panama are both in -5 while countries in between them like Honduras and Nicaragua are in -6, so a flight from Mexico to Panama would qualify.

It's a lot more complicated than that because some places observe daylight savings time and some don't. For example, Mexico City is GMT-6 (Central Daylight Time presently), whereas Panama City presently has the same time, but it is actually on Eastern Standard Time (as Panama doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time). The alignments change because of this.

Similar thing happens on flights like MIA-SCL, where the seasons are reversed. Right now Miami and Santiago show the same hour on the clock, but they aren't actually in the same time zones. Miami is Eastern Time (GMT-5) and Chile is GMT-4 by zone but the same time because it's Standard (winter) time in Chile. This flight overflies Peru, which is in the same technical time zone as Miami but is also on standard time presently, so an hour behind.

I was going to share this example! MSP would be a bit unusual, but northbound BNA-ORD flights (which I take about once a month), often/usually fly to the east over IND and central Indiana into Eastern time before turning left and re-entering Central time, assuming no avoidance of weather.

There’s no time zone in an airplane, just a reference to the sun or GMT, if you must have time reference. Once airborne, no one references what time it is on the earth below.

I flew Cincinnati-Atlanta a few years ago that spent probably half the flight in the Central Time Zone. We flew all the way down to Louisville before turning left for Atlanta. Could be the case with quite a few cities to Atlanta if you're routed in from the northwest.

A week or so ago there was a large storm system over Wisconsin. As a result some flights headed to ORD crossed Lake Michigan twice (FAR-ORD to name just one example), so these flights passed into Eastern Time. Although that's not the normal routing.

FRA to JNB or WDH or CPT
all are in UTC+2 but the Central African Republic and South Sudan share a direct border and everything due West of the CAR is in UTC+1, while everything due East of South Sudan is in UTC+3 so there's no possibility to stay in "UTC+2 airspace" all the way down.

From Chicago going down towards Chattanooga, you'll hit several time zone crossings. When you hit around Remington, Indiana on I-65, you'll go into the Eastern Time Zone since the northwest side of Indiana is in Central Time. As you continue down I-65, once you hit around Glendale and Elizabethtown in Kentucky, you'll be back in the Central Time Zone. Once you hit Nashville, you'll continue down I-24, and you return to the Eastern Time Zone once you hit the border of Georgia as you're approaching Chattanooga. There's a short stretch of I-24 in Georgia before you go back into Tennessee. The time zone crossing is somewhere around a little bit west of Knoxville.

Nothing really routes that way, though. CHI-ATL generally flies down the eastern edge of Illinois, perhaps catches Eastern in the southwest corner of Indiana, is all Central in Kentucky and the vast majority of Tennessee, and then hits Eastern near Chattanooga (typically on the northern part of the Alabama-Georgia line).

To the OP's question, though, the northbound (only) flights BNA/HSV/BHM-CHI generally route over Eastern Time portions of Kentucky and Indiana, and BNA-MKE generally routes over Indiana too.

Only in Summer though, as FRA will be back in CET (UTC+1) come winter.

GYD - DXB flies over Iran. They are both UTC+4 and Iran is UTC+4.5

Central America has CST (Central Standard Time or Central American Standard Time), which is always GMT -6. Only during DST does that equal Mountain Daylight Time. Outside of DST, everything in the US Central Time, through most of Mexico (not all of the country has the same timezone), and all the way up to the Costa Rican side of Paso Canoas (which is a bi-national city on the Costa Rican-Panamanian border) is GMT -6.
