Anyone flown all of a large fleet?

Tue Jul 02, 2019 7:26 pm

With the imminent retirement of American's MD-80's, I ran some statistics the other day on how many of them I've been on, since I have logged 519 total flights on them over the years. My logs are not complete unfortunately - I'm missing the registration for 57 of those flights due to poor record-keeping on my part at the time. What I do have shows that out of 378 total MD-80's that American has had, I've flown on 229 of them, or about 61% of the fleet. I figure the missing 57 wouldn't change that percentage too radically, but it certainly could be low by 5-10% or thereabouts.

N564AA and N972TW tied for 'most flown' at 6 times each.

Of the 149 I didn't fly - 35% of those were N9xxTW birds, which I found interesting, as some of those are among the last remaining active. But it looks like the earlier tranche of the TWA MD-80's was retired quite soon after the acquisition, so that accounts for most of them that I missed (most of my AA activity was from 2003-2016). Never got any of the N8xxRA Reno Air birds either. But I think I can confidently say that I flew the bulk of one of the largest fleets of a single type in airline history.

I don't anticipate any more flights on them as they wind down, since I have moved the majority of my flying to Delta now that I live in TYS. I do have 76 flights logged on DL MD-80's as well, on 55 different frames, but I don't think I'll be logging much more of that fleet at this point either - we'll see I guess  .

Anyway, this exercise got me curious to see if anyone has managed to fly all (or a similarly significant portion) of another large fleet like this. I suppose for the purposes of the discussion I'll define 'large' as greater than 40 frames.

I haven't done it, but I'm pretty impressed at your haul there. It's an interesting thread idea.

I think logistically, 100% coverage is most likely to happen for a type that is operated almost exclusively from a single hub and with a high percentage of the flights from that hub on that type. For example, think FI and the 757 (the total fleet over time there is just barely over 40, but some of those are/were cargo, so there aren't 40 PAX frames to cover). Perhaps someone who flies CM a lot has bagged all their 737s, which are the vast majority of the fleet and all operate from PTY.

I think that’s right; high frequency routes operated exclusively or almost exclusively by a single type would help too. I imagine someone who did STL-ORD weekly or monthly on AA through the 2000s likely got a significant percentage of the S80s, for instance. But I can’t think of many routes for large carriers that fit this description. Maybe it would have been possible on WN 732s in Texas toward the end?

I got a fair amount of those, but nowhere near all of them. I consider myself lucky that I did fly the only one in Canyon colors though (N96SW)

I was close, but missed out on the first and last 717s delivered to Midwest while flying on them between 2003 and 2009. Still, 23/25 isn't bad!

I'll have to look through my records again, but I think I've managed to get about 60 of Delta's MD-88s, with a couple of repeats.

At one point many years ago, I had managed to fly the entire VS fleet and the LAS based National, but neither of those are what I would call large.

Unfortunately I haven't flown on a "large" amount of a fleet, but I have flown on a "decent" amount of B6 A320's, WN 737-700's, DL MD88's, and PSA CR9's.

Interesting thread! So thanks for starting it.

I also regret that I did not write down each and every registration throughout the years. Sometimes you cannot see it from the gate, especially when you are in a hurry to board the plane. Yes, with some clicks you can find it in the www but often I am simply too exhausted or tired to do this.

If I would have done it, I guess I could show that I flew with about 10% of LH‘s Classic-737s...

I flew with four out of TG’s six A380s. While they are (very) „large“ aircraft, the fleet is not large. The OP defined >40 as large :-(

Eh, it's still interesting to hear about anyone's efforts to get all of a fleet. Thanks for your stories as well. :)

I flew on 50% of Lao Airlines’ A320 fleet. They have two of them :D

I've flown on almost 100 different easyJet A320 family frames - so around a quarter of the fleet, accounting for withdrawals.

Not nearly the same size fleet, but I've flown on 12 of DL's 16 757-300s. Missing N581NW, N582NW, N585NW and N592NW.

Impressive ! I guess it may not be uncommon for pilots flying for a large carrier to fly entire fleet over the course of their careers. Definitely more likely than passengers.

You'd be a bit hard pressed to find an airline with a fleet of 40 757-300s when only 55 were built.

I think this is a very cool thread idea. The best I can do is about 20 of 60 of BAs A320s which is a bit pathetic compared to most on here!

I'm on around 60+% of the BA A319 A320 A321 fleet. .. mind you its not helping with their new NEOs coming on line. Actually sat on a "new" one for me G-MEDL at the moment heading back from STO.

I had flown all the BA 767s towards the last couple of years they where in service when it was down to a dozen or so in the fleet.

Otherwise next is the QF A380s 8 out of 12 done at 66% Keep getting same ones all the time! But hardly a large fleet.
