Countries where airlines are biggest brands

Wed Jul 10, 2019 6:03 am

Which airlines are the most well known brands in their respective countries? I know for Qatar and Turkish, and for Singapore that's the case. What about other nations?

How do you measure the "biggest brand"?

For UAE, or at least Dubai, Emirates is a very good example. Qatar as well.

But I'm not sure I agree with Singapore or Turkish.

I'd argue Air New Zealand is the possibly the biggest local brand in NZ.

You could say Icelandair is arguably the largest in Iceland, or possibly tied with Icelandic Glacial water.

Name that came to mind was Singapore. Even if the country has a host of many other brands, the airline stands out most

The closest I get to aviation is Red Bull for Austria.

New Zealand isn't on those lists, but Air New Zealand does come up number 1 or 2 for New Zealand depending on year, on other lists.

If you're counting LCCs, then AK/FD in Malaysia and Thailand and JT in Indonesia.

Red Bull isn't really an Austrian brand... It originated from Thailand.

Red Bull is Austrian. The drink might originate from Thailand, but the company and name doesn't.

Wrong - The Red Bull name is derived from the original Thai energy drink Krating Daeng..... Even now Chaleo Yoovidhya's family hold 51% of the shares in Red Bull GmbH.

*sigh* thats not the brand. You even wrote it in your own post: Red Bull GmbH.

A brand is a name, term, design, symbol or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers.[2][3][4] Brands are used in business, marketing, and advertising. Name brands are sometimes distinguished from generic or store brands.

Red Bull is the brand. Krating Daeng is a product they sell. Red Bull is not limited to selling Krating Daeng, they can slap the Red Bull brand onto everything from toilet paper to burgers, cars or airplane interiors if they wanted to, still under the Red Bull brand. And indeed, they do, like with Red Bull Coke.

Krating Deang translated is Red Bull. That's where the Red Bull name came from and that's where the brand and design came from - Thailand and not Austria.

You are really obtuse, aren't you? Where the inspiration for the brand came from is irrelevant. It is where the brand is based that matters. Red Bull, that's the brand. Not Krating Deang, not Röd Tjur, not Taureau Rouge, not Toro Rosso nor any other translation. Just "Red Bull". That's the brand.

JAL has to be one of Japan's biggest brands... ANA probably is now too, but JAL has more of a historical foothold since it used to be the flag carrier.

I disagree.

Toyota is by far Japan's biggest brand. Then you have the other autos such as Mazda and Nissan; the electronics companies such as Nintendo, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Sony, Nikon, Toshiba, Yamaha etc. Plus the Mitsubishi conglomerate which seems to have a hand in every industry. And that's only considering the Japanese brands from an international perspective, domestically I wouldn't be shocked if the likes of JR rates higher than either airline.

The airlines aren't anywhere close to the largest brands in Japan.

Emirates is a massive brand in the UAE and particularly Dubai. Arguably the most successful home grown company there and the secret to Dubai's claim to fame. The EK logo is on most major championships/events in town. And a very high percentage of Dubai's population (relative to other cities) works for EK/DXB.

I'm gonna say for the UK, Virgin is overall the biggest brand, of which Virgin Atlantic is a very significant part, along with Virgin Trains, Virgin Money, Virgin Media, Virgin Care, Virgin Active etc.

So on it's own, Virgin Atlantic is definitely not the largest, but when combined with all the other Virgin's it certainly could be.

Did you mean to ask which airlines are the most well known brands outside their respective countries? It's not at all obvious to me any airline is the best known brand in their respective country. And even outside the country the answer would heavily depend on where you're answering from.

For example, If you live in the US and have never been to Singapore or S.E. Asia in general, Singapore Airlines may be the only Singapore brand you've ever heard of. If you've spent any time travelling around the region, Tiger Beer is probably the one you're thinking of. And if you live in Singapore, I would guess there are a number of brands that absolutely everybody know, So Singapore Airlines would share a very crowded no.1 spot.

Icelandic Glacial Water? Never heard of it. Two brands that come to my mind when I think of Iceland are the airline Wow Air and the bank Icesave. Both companies collapsed which caused quite some financial damage to a lot of people.

If you measure in terms of brand value, Virgin doesn’t come close.

I'm not sure because when Playboy comes to mind I can only think of the mansion in Hollywood. I think a better replacement would be the Beverly Hills Hotel

Etihad and Emirates has their name slapped on pretty much lot of places in UAE, and across the world like in UK especially. I'd say LH in Germany. Air Canada in Canada.
