Why no Japanese airline flying to auckland

Thu Aug 08, 2019 1:43 am

Is there any chance in the future that either ANA or JAL would fly to auckland?

First ask, how many weekly flights do Air NZ fly between Japan & NZ?
JL is not longer government owned. ANA can easily codeshare on NZ and send their low-density, premium-class centered widebody fleet elsewhere around the globe.

ANA could still fly from Haneda to auckland, could definitely by 2 daily flights between NZ and Japan especially from October to April. Can’t believe they are choosing to fly to more exotic destinations like Chennai and Vladivostok in the future but not Auckland.

Not sure why, seeing as you don't know the fare premium people are willing to pay them to fly to those "exotic" places, versus somewhere that already has Star service to Japan + plenty of easy cnnx.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

Currently, NZ operates 10x weekly to NRT and 3x weekly to KIX in summer (NW)
and 7x weekly to NRT in winter (NS)

Wasn’t there an HND service too? Or did that get dropped with all the 787 issues?

New Zealand/Japan market has had an mixed past, and has been subject to many changes over the past 20 years around demand.

NZ also codeshares with JL for an long time and wasn’t friends with ANA until a couple years back.

JL served AKL from 1981? Through 1997 initially DC8’s via NAN IIRC then DC10s and 747s from NRT, was never more than 2-3 weekly. They codeshared with NZ for years and at one point NZ served FUK and NGO as well. JL was replaced with NH a few years ago.

I had heard NH did consider AKL around the time NZ commenced HND in 2017 (now suspended)

I do wonder with the way NZ use alliances weather there is scope for NH to operate the seasonal NW frequency from NRT with a 787, possibly bringing back a CHC link a 3 weekly a week as well as AKL 4 weekly? It frees up NZ’s own aircraft as they may not take anymore Long haul frames until 2022.

HND was dropped with the 787 issues, inefficiency in aircraft utilisation with night time only ops meaning the aircraft sat from 0600-2200.

NRT was always a 747 route until 2006, 763s on some NS flights, then 772s and then due to the Japan economy and earthquake 763s were used for a few years with 772s at peak times.

KIX also got 747s on weekends in NW up until 2006, it got 772s briefly before reverting to 763s and an overnight departure for a short while before being dropped in 2013. It came back seasonally in 2016 and has since operated 3x weekly NW with 789s.

Well both JL and NH have in recent years expanded their Australian networks, JL flies to SYD and MEL and NH flies to SYD and PER, there could be a chance with a 788.

NH codeshare with NZ. JL probably think there are easier routes to tackle than competing against them. And JL can get their passengers to New Zealand with FJ and QF codeshares.

Exactly. The day when airlines need to fly almost anywhere is long over thanks to strong alliances.
