Smallest airport in EU with longhaul service

Wed Aug 14, 2019 12:08 pm

As the "Smallest airport in U.S with long haul service" (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1428933) has grown popular I was wondering what is the smallest EU airport with long haul service?

In 2016 there used to be a flight between OSR (Ostrava, Czech republic) and Dubai DXB. OSR served exactly 258 223 travellers in 2016, and in those days it had 3 other scheduled flights (Prague, Milano and London). Today only FR to London remains plus a bunch of charter flights.

Doubt it could be. I think RUN airport handles around 2 million passengers a year, not exactly sure. But, surely there's smaller airports in Europe with longhaul service.

Define long haul? Is it long haul if it's just an ordinary 737-800?

Basel-Euroairport (8,5 mio passengers) has (had?) Air Transat A310 service to Canada.

Not quite EU, but Stavanger (4.5 mio) had the SAS/PrivatAir service to Houston on the 737-700BBJ for a short while.

Dubrovnik (2.5 mio) is getting seasonal service to the US soon.

You know I was just about to very anal and say Basel is not in the EU, but then remembered the actual airport is located over the border from Basel

How about TBS? They had approx. 3.8 million pax last year and they have flights with China Southern to PEK and URC and FlyDubai to DXB. Korean Air also operates a seasonal charter to ICN.

Not in EU and truly more Eurasia than Europe and I'm fairly sure Tbilisi to Dubai is a relatively short hop

Cayenne. Less than 500,000 passengers a year. But year round trans-Atlantic service to Paris-Orly.

DBV already has seasonal service to PHL on a AA 763 this season. It will increase to daily next summer.

SNN is a pretty small airport for the amount of service it has to the US.

Im curious as to why the amount of service from Tbilisi to Asia as per the poster above.

Urumqi, Beijing and Seoul...

Even if just charters. Is there some connection I'm missing? Shopping for wealthy Georgians? Mass tourism in either direction? Business ties ?

Tourism in Georgia is booming. Rich history/culture, good wine/food, and relatively cheap. That pretty much explains it.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!
