History of US-Athens service

Wed Aug 14, 2019 10:03 pm

I am curious when each of the current routes began and if the were any other routes ever flown by any airline at the current Athens airport or the past one.

TW began flying US-Athens services in 1947. For decades it was the only US carrier to serve ATH until PA started FRA-ATH flights in 1985. TW continued to serve the route on the 747, and eventually the 767 until the late 90s. DL inherited PAs FRA hub, and with it FRA-ATH. It began nonstop seasonal JFK-ATH flights in the early/mid 90s, and continued operating FRA-ATH during the winter months when JFK-ATH didn't operate. In summer 99 and 00, DL flew ATL-ATH on the M11 a few times a week. That flight resumed around 2005 and operated for a few summers before being cut. Tower Air operated ATH service in the late 90s and early 00s alongside DL and TW.

Other than EKs EWR-ATH, all US-ATH service is seasonal. DLs JFK-ATH was a 763 for most of its existence. DL has since upgauged both daily flights to the A333 during the peak summer months, whereas one flight sometimes operates as a 764 outside those months. AAs current PHL-ATH service was inaugurated by US in 2007. It's been A333 for most of its existence, going A332 here and there. This year AA also launched ORD-ATH on a 788. UA served ATH for a few years (first year round, then seasonal) beginning around 2007. They returned to ATH a few years ago with a seasonal service from EWR.

OA flew ATH-JFK from the mid 1960s until dropping all longhaul flights. They also briefly served BOS and ORD. I believe ORD was always a tag onto the JFK flight, whereas BOS operated both as a tag to JFK and on a nonstop basis.

DL currently operates twice daily A330 service between JFK and ATH, which switches to once daily during off-peak season. There also used to be flights from Atlanta, but those are gone now.
If you can walk away from it intact, it was a good landing!

At one point before Emirates launched it's Dubai to Athens to Newark flights, routes between the United States and Athens only operated seasonaly. Also, it was Continental that flew the route from Newark to Athens beginning in 2007.

I recommend this site for you as well (not just for Athens):

http://www.departedflights.com

TWA's service in the 1980's was routed TLV/CAI-ATH-FCO-JFK, and sometimes via CDG as well. Those of us old enough to remember recall the hijacking of TWA 847 in 1985, and the discussion of how it was hijacked between ATH and FCO. Athens kind of kiddingly lax security came under great security after this incident, and along with the possibility of the 96 Olympics taking place in Greece prompted the move to a totally new airport.
