How close are we to non-stop USA/Vietnam flights?

Sat Aug 17, 2019 12:19 am

I know this still needs to be worked out between the 2 governments but I'm curious as to when we'll see non-stop Vietnam flights from the US?

I could see UA starting SFO-SGN or VN starting LAX-SGN and LAX-HAN just to start.

Thoughts?

Didn’t Vietnam Airlines apply for U.S. service?

And there’s Bamboo Airways... the airline that wants to fly an A380 between Vietnam and LAX/SFO.

If more manufacturing relocates from China to Vietnam, soon.

Yes, UA did SFO-HKG-SGN from 2004 to 2016.

UA used to fly a B744 from SGN to HKG continuing onto SFO or ORD. Later downgraded to a B738 from the GUM operation and cancelled.

Thailand is actually higher yielding from the US but TG is in such a financial and also operational disarray (they failed their last FAA safety audit) that maybe Vietnam service comes first.

We are one step closer with FAA granting Vietnam a Category 1 safety rating earlier this year.

My guess they will start with something like SGN-LAX-SGN. VN have the aircraft capable of doing the route now.

Just like bkk, Vietnam pax will not pay extra for nonstop. Most of these pax are vfr, not in a huge rush, and don't mind taking a break between flights. BR (who even have Vietnamese speaking FAs and menus) among other airlines can serve this route with more frequency for a lower price. This will not work.

If Bamboo can deliver their promises, I think they'll be first to either SFO/LAX. Then again, Vietnam Airlines announced upon the 777 joining the fleet that they would fly to SFO/LAX not long afterwards. It never happened, even with the arrival of the A350s many years later, but they did park one on the hard stands by the A-Terminal for several days and the airport promoted the aircraft's presence because of the planned service. With how long/thin of a flight it is, it is hard to guess, but I think it'll happen eventually, even if it doesn't pan out ultimately like flights to Thailand.

Since VN does not have premium heavy aircraft, with J, Y+ & Y, I think there may be enough demand to fill those J seats (even if some get used to upgrade or for bulk sales) & I would not imagine VN has real high operating costs. the only seats that count as premium are the J's. I will bet VN will offer connections to Laos, Cambodia &more options to Thailand, Malaysia & Indonesia.

I don't think trying to compete to SIN, BKK, HKG as there are so many more options available, most business flyers do so with loyalty to their alliance, in this case SkyTeam. Does DL have a relationship now with VN? If DL can provide feed for this LAX flight, it may help Skyteam break out of the HND & ICN only mode more.

NW served SGN from NRT for a year or two, perhaps 2009/2010.

It is inconceivable to me that the Vietnamese government will allow Bamboo to fly non-stop to the US before VN Air. And if they did allow it, the cost of obtaining the route would make it unprofitable.

Define "not work," seeing as VN has made no secret that they don't expect a nonstop to be operationally profitable as a standalone.

Even if we were to limit such a statement to nonstop TPACs between the USA and east Asia:
How does offering nonstops to the US from PEK, PVG, CAN, NKG, SHE, CTU, TAO, KMG, WUH, XMN, TPE, NGO, and KIX equate to being in an "HND & ICN only mode"...?
