How come Aeroflot doesn't fly to Singapore or Mumbai?

Mon Aug 26, 2019 8:20 pm

I was looking at Aeroflot's destinations for a up-coming trip to Europe from Asia and realised Aeroflot flies to LITERALLY every airport in Europe (both Western & Eastern). They need profitable growth amid the US sanctions and they could launch Singapore (large high yielding banking, Asia regional HQ for multi-nationals) or Mumbai (India's financial centre, could attract US connections if timed correctly). They fly 2x daily to New Delhi with big equipment (A333). They literally fly to every other major Asian city.

SQ flies direct to dme on an a350 and goes on to stockholm. I would think most high yielding travelers would choose this.

Ural Airlines was supposed to start flights to Moscow from Bombay, but the date kept on being pushed, now the date is 17th September.

If Aeroflot thinks A330 is too big for Bombay, then they cause use the A321. Another problem is that its hard to get slots at Bombay. But with Jet Airways gone, maybe they can try to get slots.

They do not. No airline does or realistically could.

Maybe it's because they don't want to.

What is your definition of "major" or would that be "MAJOR"?

SE Asia is a popular among the travellers in Northern-Europe, Aeroflot often is the cheapest option to Bangkok at least and flying through Moscow makes sense geographically but... Many don't feel comfortable entering today's Russia or flying a Russian airline or both. Perhaps things change in the future.

No offense but... this is probably gonna get moved to Travel/Polls like every other "Why Doesn't X Fly to Y" thread...

If we really want to get picky, Aeroflot doesn't fly to Edinburgh/Birmingham/Reykjavik...

EDIT: Yup, moved.

Just looking at the top 30 metro areas of Asia, we can see that 18 of those are NOT served by Aeroflot. (This doesn't include cities within a major airport catchment like PEK or CAN.)

3. Jakarta
4. Mumbai
7. Manila
8. Karachi
11. Osaka
12. Dhaka
14. Kolkata
16. Chongqing
19. Chengdu
20. Bangalore
21. Lahore
22. Nagoya
24. Chennai
25. Hyderabad
26. Taipei
27. Hangzhou

They used to fly to Singapore via BKK on IL96. If I recall well they terminated the BKK-Sin sector around time of SARS and never came back

Can’t believe no Indian airline fly to Russia but right now mostly every major Chinese airline is fly to Moscow and st-Pete (SVO feels like Chinatown especially in late afternoon-evening)

Aeroflot history with Singapore dated back to late 1970s when they ran IL-62M services, linked with SVO-BKK-SIN, SVO-KUL-SIN with some flight going to CGK then. It was terminated in early 2000s to consolidate their operation at BKK. In the mid 1980s, they added DEL into the mix. https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/ai ... t-network/

Aaaaaaaand this aged well.

Aeroflot will resume SVO-BOM in July 2020.

Not many people from India will go to Cuba with beach destinations domestically like Goa close by or the Maldives a stone's throw away.
Bread and butter for India to the US is the massive amount of business travelers picking up the low yields from VFR travel in the back. From experience, Americans don't exactly want to fly through Russia nor see Aeroflot as a brand they'd want to throw on their corporate card (especially as Delta is starting flights to BOM soon).

I can't believe I am defending this poster, but I'm assuming they are young and therefore have grown up in a world where "literally" means "figuratively". This mis-use has been around for a very long time, over 100 years, but has exploded under millennials and post-millenials (e.g. I literally just died laughing!). It of course doesn't make any sense in a written format without spoken intonation, but realistically the English language is moving in this direction over time even if older purists don't like it.
