Warning for those going to Disney for the new Star Wars land: TSA has just banned the themed Coke bottles sold there

Wed Aug 28, 2019 4:09 am

This is not an April's Fool joke: the TSA has just banned in both carry-on and checked luggage the themed bottles that Coke came up with for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Star Wars land. Looking like thermal detonators, those bottles "could be confused for explosives" during scanning.

This actually makes sense - they look like grenades.

Good for the TSA. I'm glad that even replicas aren't allowed - didn't know that.

Disneyland has some pretty stringent security measures and attire rules when it comes to entering the park. I guess if you're making a profit on replica explosive devices, they'll make an exception.

From experience TSA agents regularly don’t care and you’ll probably get through fine especially when it’s super busy.

This is by far one of the dumbest things to be banned but whatever you gotta do for Security theatre...

I had no issue getting a few of these through Orlando in a carry on a few weeks ago. Again, this will probably be a YMMV sort of thing.

Dumb question:
Isn’t the whole point of everything TSA does involve looking inside stuff? Can they not see there’s nothing inside this object? Who cares about the shape?

The very disturbing corollary is if a weapon doesn’t look like a weapon they have no idea. Pitiful.

Here's another dumb question - are you willing to wait in line longer because the TSA has to inspect every one of these that comes through the machine?

A decently trained person on the scanners should have no trouble determining that these are not weapons, there would be too many "bits" missing. A full can may cause a smaller amount of concern, but a quick visual would be all that is needed to confirm what it is. Surely just placing any of these items in their own tray for scanning, a 2 second visual by an agent would confirm it's safe and on your way. Maybe ban full ones, but empty ones should be no problem for a correctly trained person. A replica pistol, or a lighter in a pistol shape should cause far more concern that these bottles should.

You may be right, but what's a sensible rule? "Replicas that can be figured out quickly are okay but replicas that can't aren't okay" isn't really workable.

If these are empty and you take the "detonator" style cap off, then it really shouldn't be a problem i would assume. Then you have the basic Christmas ornament bottle design and keep the cap separate cause it just has a few plastic lines in it.

So, people with a plate in their hip shouldnt be allowed to fly because you would have to wait in line longer? It's an X-RAY machine. It's supposed to be able to see inside objects. Either it can and they can tell these items have no internal apparatus or it can't and we have one more example of security theater because how many other things not in the shape of a weapon just go through that they also can't see through..
