JAL was a governmental owned airline until 1989 and ANA as purely privately operated company was not allowed to run any scheduled international services until 1986 (charter flight have been possible since the early 70s though). So not sure if there has been that much competition before the 90s. Still ANA has been the biggest airline on domestic routes for the last 45 years and is currently the overall number one in Japan.

It was somewhat similar to the rivalry between Pan Am and TWA. But since JAL went private and international routes were opened up to ANA, it's been about the same as it is now.

One thing that I don't think western followers of Japanese aviation give enough weight to is JAL 123. Even though that happened 34 years ago, it was definitely a catalyst for ANA's growth at JAL's expense. My wife, who is from Japan, still talks about JAL 123 whenever we fly JAL. Her mother just won't fly JAL, even today. In Japan, where everything is supposed to work properly all the time and public safety is considered paramount, the lingering effects of JAL 123 really hurt the company once it was privatized and international routes opened up to ANA. All of that happened within just a couple of years, so it was still relatively fresh in the public's mind once ANA started flying a lot of the same routes JAL did.

Of course JAL is still pretty big and does fairly well for itself, but ANA has definitely grown faster and is now larger than JAL.
