LOT polish east Asia expansion opportunities

Fri Sep 06, 2019 7:11 am

As the up and coming airline of Eastern Europe. Out of the main cities in Asia LOT flies to Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo and Singapore. Do you think they should now fly to Shanghai, Hong Kong and Bangkok?

There was some word on DEL earlier in the year.

What's the latest on this?

The inaugural WAW-DEL was actually pushed up to the 11th, and I'm booked on it :bouncy:

LOT has three more 787-9's on order, with one delivery in October and two next year. The total will be 9x -9's and 8x -8's. Once the issues with RR engines are resolved, LOT will have approx 2 free widebody aircraft and I think we'll see another longhaul announcement or two, possibly to east Asia.

Shanghai and Osaka come to mind as possible frontrunners.

I think one of those two will go to BUD as they announced JFK going daily.

The Poland-China bilateral is maxed out, so unless this is changed, and China seems unwilling to agree to that change, there is no option of starting flights to any additional Chinese city (apart from PEK and PKX). This is even though LOT would love to do it. .

Vietnam is a few years perspective. Certainly not 2020.

In Asia LOT would love to increase frequency to Seul, but again this seems to be blocked on a Korean side. Instead they are starting this year BUD-ICN.

As to Japan, I guess we may see in 2020 more frequences to NRT or starting KIX.

Also a new destination in India is probable, but for 2021.

How about Hong Kong?

LOT was interested, but apparently there are no appropriate slots. There is also no bilateral, but slots are the main problem here.

When it comes to bilateral with China, the Polish side is suggesting its extension to cover also flights to Shanghai and Guangzhou. The latter would probably mean no Hong Kong flights at least for some time. The issue was raised on prime ministers level some time ago, but no clear results at least for now.

The most probable (rumoured) new destination for LO from WAW in summer 2020 is IAD and maybe YYZ.

What about BKK, considering it is a Star Alliance hub which allows connections with TG and the huge tourist market there.

BKK is traditionally no. 1 unserved destination from WAW (76k pax yearly), but it is served by UIA from Kiev with dirty cheap prices from WAW, what makes it uninteresting for LO. Instead, as a countercyclical venture, LO starts this winter CMB.

In fact all top 10 unserved non-European destinations from WAW are Asian.

Do you mean YUL (or are there other rumours)? YYZ is definitely served already.

Sorry, I meant YUL of course. YYZ is a well-established destination for LO.
