JT8Ds in Europe? (particularly EGLL/EGSS/EGKK)

Sat Sep 21, 2019 12:52 am

Greetings, first post! I last flew on a JT8D-powered airliner in 2000 (Finnair MD-82 or -83). I miss them to bits and endlessly scour YouTube footage of them, mainly for that glorious sound. Do they (732, 727, MDxx, DC9) ever pass through EGLL/EGSS/EGKK anymore? If so, I'd love to see them or even book a flight if possible.

Those airliners are all long retired, no chance of flying them anymore. The last airline that operated the MD-80 series to London (Stansted) was Belle Air, which went belly-up in 2013 however they had already retired their MD-80s before that.

So I guess you'll have to settle for the Youtube videos, showing that nostalgia from the past.

Scheduled flights on those are long gone.

BUT, SAS have operated MD-80s into LHR a number of times as charters. Including earlier this year for a while. I guess you may see those again? No idea though.

I had a fear that would be the case. How about the rest of Europe? Do any of the lower-level airlines, or even freight carries, still use them?

I am not aware of any 727, 737 Jurassic or DC9 still being active in Europe except maybe some freighters. So my plan was to ride the MD with SK, but I could not do it as planned. Some day I had a H6 MD sitting beside me on the next gate. So I checked H6 and you can also book flights only via the tour operators website. Another option would be DX/R6. but I can't comment on them. However I have my doubts that they are flying into London, but you asked about the rest of Europe. Hope this helps.

I made my trip in the end with DL.

H6 is Bulgarian Air Charter and DX is Danish Air Transport. I have to correct myself here a bit because R6 is a subsidiary of Danish Air Transport called DAT LT and is operating regional aircraft only. The MD's are operated by DAT = DX. I did not notice this before, sorry for the correction.

Many thanks.

Might try to get a flight with one or other before they disappear.

The DAT mad dogs that operated into LHR last year were subs for the usual SK CPH flight.
Bizarrely , they were shown as available to book on SK’s website for about a week in advance.

Indeed SAS was one of the last airlines to operate the MD-80s in Europe. Was, because all SAS MD-80s are retired by now.

SAS hasn't had MD-80s for years. The last ones left in October 2013.

True, but last year, several SK CPH flights were operated with a DAT MadDog.

And only last month, one of the Bulgarian Air Charter MadDogs covered a Bulgaria Air 320 flight .
