MAD-SYD best options?

Tue Oct 01, 2019 4:42 pm

Hey there! I need advice booking flights from MAD to SYD in Y class. My main concern is comfort over time, I wouldn't mind going 2 stops if seat/cabin comfort is better. Right now the cheapest options are Etihad via AUH on 789/77W and Lufthansa/Cathay via MUC and HKG on A359/77W. How would you rate them?

Thanks in advance

For bucket list's sake, I don't think you'd regret MAD-LHR-PER-SYD. All on a OneWorld ticket, too. Not sure about the price situation there, though.
Next flight: October 17 DL2641 BWI-ATL B739
October 17 DL2607 ATL-TPA B752

None of these options are going to be comfortable for flights this long so I would go for speed. The fastest trip is Emirates thru Dubai at 22 hours. Multiple connections are longer, some of them much longer. Any connection thru LHR is 35+ hours. You’d definitely be regretting that for the final 13 hours of travel.

Absolutely agree - no point in extending the trip when you'll be suffering 20hrs+ flight time in Y.

That said, probably better on an A380 than 77W in Y from ME to SYD.

If comfort is your main concern, with Emirates you can fly both legs with A380.

How about A359/A35K for the entire duration? QR has a flight that's fully A350XWB to SYD and from my observations you'd be better off on QR than EK.

Seguro?! Normally the Chines airlines are the most cheapest from MAD with extremely low fares and looong flight times. But, maybe you are entitled to the 72hrs free transit visa in China - so adding a new destination and sightseeing without extra costs! On top, most airlines -like MU- are offering FREE hotel accommodation in transit as well...

Why would you suffer? I recently travelled almost 12 hours in economy on a Swiss A340. I did not suffer at all.

When flying to Australia why not take a break somewhere in the middle? I think extending the trip is actually a very good idea.

As an Australian, the important thing is to get here. :P

From MAD, the ME is the easiest and most logical intermediate point. If you were going to do a second stop, a stopover in SE Asia is the next logical choice, opening up a range of other flights.

Australians have switched to the ME3 because of one stop convenience, even though the SYD/MEL/BNE -ME leg is too long for any real comfort. My son flew one stop SYD-TGL last week (QR). An option that wasn't available 10 years ago, but is now possible with more than one carrier.

The QR A35K DOH-SYD starts next month. I haven't flown A350, so can't comment on the relative comfort (hoping to fly CX A350 SYD-HKG later in the year). For QR, the DOH-SYD(-CBR) 77W is currently the less preferred of their 2xdaily to SYD)

Thanks for all your responses, I do appreciate them. EK is 1600€+ r/t which seems a bit overpriced. I am inclined to book 1050€ LH/CX at 28h, not too bad, and a nice mix of aircraft with A359, B748, B77W. What do you all think?

If you're happy with 28hrs is sounds like an interesting mix of types on well rated airlines.

Which sector is the 77W on? IIRC, CX is switching the HKG-SYD 77W to 359 in the next month or so. Its other two daily flights on the route are A333.

In my opinion it is a great combination, especially the B748 is a rare aircraft to fly on and the A359 much better than the B787. I am just worried about the issue of the tickets, I only would book through a reliable travel agent (and not through opodo etc.).

If money is the big concern, how about this?

Madrid - Athens on Ryanair € 32,52
Athens - Singapore on Scoot € 187,99
Singapore - Sydney on Scoot € 149,11

Total € 369,62.

However layover times would suck. Ryanair Madrid-Athens arrives in Athens at 11:00 while Scoot Athens-Singapore departs the next day at 10:55. That's almost 24 hours in Athens. Then you arrive in Singapore at 03:30 at night, while the flight to Sydney leaves at 02:00 so you have another full day layover.

As these are self-transfers, having long layovers is a good thing but this is perhaps a bit too much.

For choice of aircraft, it ain't very exciting. Ryanair is a 737-800 while Scoot is a 787-8 or 787-9. But the price would be unbeatable.

With the current unrest in Hong Kong, I would avoid going through there. It wouldn't be the first time the airport is the target of protesters. It causes disruptions.

For comfort avoid 9 abreast 787s (which is all of them except JAL) and 10 abreast 777s (including EK, varies elsewhere). Do you really want to be rubbing thighs and shoulders with your neighbour all that way, and fighting for elbow room?

Look for A330, A340, A350, A380, B767 and 9 abreast B777 for dignity in economy.
