Where are the Lufthansa 747-8s?

Wed Oct 09, 2019 5:20 am

I’m trying to plan a trip from SFO to Spain in December, and there are no direct flights. For premium economy, Lufthansa came up with reasonable flight times and prices via MUC. Outbound is A380 and 777 return. Both sound great, especially since I’ve never ridden the super jumbo. I’ve done tons of 777 flights, but never on LH. So...bonus...
But it makes me wonder where are those delightful 747-8s deployed?

Lufthansa doesn´t have 777, at least until their first 779 arrives. ...

The 748 currently fly PEK, EWR, BLR, IAD, BOS, LAX, ORD, JNB, MEX, HND, GRU, BOM ... i probably missed some.

best regards

SFO-FRA will change from an A380 to the 747-8, but not until March.

OK closer inspection shows A380 for SFO-MUC on 12/07, but the return flights on either 12/14 or 12/15 or 12/16 are on United 777s. I guess I could look harder to find the return flight on LH, but it looks like that means mostly A340-6, not A380. I love the LH A340-6, but would like to try something different.

What is the main flight time and number for LH from MUC to SFO?

LH458 leaves MUC at 16.30 CDT and arrives SFO 19.35 PDT. on an A380.
That feeling when you sit at the end of a runway, brakes are released and the raw power takes over. Now that is a thing of beauty and it never gets old.

Not sure where you're looking, but LH flies SFO-MUC daily. It is scheduled a little too late for the day for my liking, so I've never taken it. Depending on when and how you're connecting, as well as where you're trying to book, it may or may not show up.

Hi there,
Sorry for the small off topic. Norwegian flies direct SFO-BCN almost on a daily basis.
Anyway I understand the potential lure of a 747-8.
Cheers!

I would do anything to fly again in an A 340-600, whose operation time will soon end at LH. She is for me the most beautiful aircraft ever.

How is 2140 too late? Seems perfect to me, don’t need to check in til 2000 so you have the whole day free, but it’s not like an 0200 departure whee you’re nodding off at the gate. I’m curious!
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I think the issue is (and I can see where the OP is coming from here) that most people take Lufthansa and will be connecting elsewhere in Europe, I think the percentage of people who's final destination is MUC would be low, around 20 - 30%.

Arriving into MUC at 15:55 only really allows one late connection to another European city at say around 18:00 - arriving around 19:30 / 20:00.
For most people, that's annoyingly late as you then have to transfer to your hotel etc and by the time you're settled, that's a full day of your trip gone.

At least if it was scheduled to arrive into MUC around 13:00, connections could be made to arrive at final destinations for dinner.

But then again, I'm not an airline scheduler so there's probably a reason for that!

If you want to fly a LH 747-8i you should book a flight to FRA since LH only operates 747-8i flights to and from FRA. MUC is all Airbus. If you want to go to MUC you can take a rental car in FRA and enjoy the German Autobahn while driving the 400 KM with partially no Speed Limit ;)

Right. With road works every 20km or so where speed is limited to 80 km/h...
Better take ICE high speed trains, no?
Or fly LH FRA-MUC off course...
Britten Norman Islander VP-FBR on Falkland Islands. THAT'S FLYING!

Sure bet for the LH 748 is out of ORD, 2x daily year-round to FRA.

Other stations such as EWR, LAX, IAH, BOS and SFO change equipment type seasonally.
