Refund for flights on jets with sport teams you hate, pink ribbons, etc.

Thu Oct 10, 2019 1:45 pm

Would an airline issue a refund or reroute you if you didn't want to fly on a jet which promoted something you hate? Perhaps you hate the NY Jets and the plane looks like it's the team's very own private charter jet. Maybe you hated TWA or America West and said you would never in a million years fly them again and you see one of their jets at the gate for your flight. Maybe, at the start of your dream vacation, you don't want to think about cancer (perhaps even moreso if you had it and the trip was to make you forget about it for awhile). I am curious what you guys think.

It would get real in a heartbeat if AA launched a Trump Shuttle retro jet. Perhaps this should move to Non-Aviation.

I actually like that question and think it's an interesting thing to think about.
But I have no valuable contribution.

In a word, no. If nothing else, all of these special liveries are public and in fact advertised. You know - or should know - there's a possibility of getting one of these liveries when you buy a ticket. Just like you can't demand a refund from Spirit because you didn't know they charge for soda, you can't demand a refund from any carrier because you didn't know how their planes are painted. This is easily available information and it's caveat emptor.

I would question the mental stability of said passenger.

Actually, I did have this happen to me once- I was flying MCO-IAD on United, and we got one of the Star Alliance logojets. An elderly passenger saw the plane pull into the gate, and went up to the podium and demanded to be put on a different flight, because he wanted to fly on United, not "whatever airline that is there".

Long story short, the gate agents did re-book him on a different flight, but only because we were overbooked and they needed the seat...

It's the same as if at the time of booking, the equipment stated was a 77W but when boarding you have an A330 at the gate. Do you think the pax has a case then too?

I’d be nervous that any jet featuring a Sheffield United logo would be prone to catastrophic failure.

I'm willing to bet some diehard Manchester United fans would be fuming if they saw this turn up at their gate:

I think it is a perfectly valid question.
What if you are flying Delta and instead of the scheduled A330 the aircraft that pulls at your gate is a pink 767-400? A PINK aircraft!
And to make matters worse once you reach you assigned seat your seatmate is a 50 year old 250 lbs guy in a pink tutu dress who immediately starts blubbering about pink IZOD polo shirts!
Wouldn't you have grounds not only to be rebooked (on a non-pink aircraft) AND upgraded but also get monetary compensation for emotional distress?

There are exceptions to every rule. That would definitely get you compensation. I don't think he's 50, though...

In march this year FC Schalke 04 was beaten up 7:0 by Manchester City in European Football Champions League. To make things worse one of charter planes taking the fans home was showing the full branding of local arch rival Borussia Dortmund.

You’re creating a long-winded description of a person best described as a snowflake.

Most snowflakes would go ahead and take the flight so they could get where they wanted to go. Then they would ask for a refund and compensation based on the emotional distress they suffered.

If someone did such a thing they should immediately be placed on the no-fly list.
