What routes would you like to see?

Fri Nov 01, 2019 4:58 pm

A. What routes would you like airlines to launch within the near future?
B. Which routes do you think would actually be viable?

Here's my wishlist:

    - Emirates: DXB-DTW
    - Lufthansa: MUC-SAN
    - Qantas: PER-SFO, PER-LAX
R.I.P.

Pan Am (B 19-10-1927, D 4-12-1991)
TWA (B 1-10-1930, D 1-12-2001)
Douglas (B 22-7-1921, D 23-5-2006)

YHZ-AMS - Westjet. This might happen with a MAX, if they ever fly again. It is the next logical MAX destination if WS decides to expand TATL from YHZ.
YHZ-DSS - Anyone? This is the craziest of pipe dreams, but it would be convenient for my family (and probably no one else.)

BOS-DSS or YUL-DSS would be an improvement over current options.

More routes from Munich (on Lufthansa or Star Alliance airlines) to secondary european airports. It should at least match Frankfurt.

What would benefit me the most: The Philippines paving the runway in Hilongos and extending it by about 5 to 6,000' and AA starting LAX to Hilongos.

If that doesn't happen:

LAX to Tacloban City (TAC / RPVA) on AA.
LAX to Panglao (TAG / RPSP) on AA.

Of these routes, which are viable? None.

This is perhaps too broad of a topic to be extremely useful, but it is also very fun for me, so I'll throw in my two cents, whether they are worth two cents or not.

I would love to see Air Canada or WestJet add Canadian service to markets in Southeast Asia which currently lack direct flights:

YVR-BKK
YVR-KLL
YVR-CEB (MNL already has service to both YVR and YYZ by Philippine Airlines)
YVR-SIN or YYZ-SIN

From Toronto-Pearson, I would love to see coverage for the Nordic countries (YYZ-CPH has 3x weekly coverage with AC) and South Africa:

YYZ-OSL
YYZ-ARN
YYZ-HEL
YYZ-JNB
YYZ-CPT

Quebec City to Paris seems a surety in the near future:

YQB-CDG

With SLC being completely rebuilt and redesigned, I would love to see the reentrance of Air Canada into the market, although Delta and their joint venture partner WestJet make that a very tough fight. SLC is there only major Western market I can think of with no AC service. It makes for a glaring omission when looking at their route maps. Perhaps with more than one destination they might stands a better chance, but again, I'm only dreaming and speaking more from the heart than the head:

YVR-SLC
YYC-SLC
YEG-SLC (currently unserved)
YYZ-SLC

Saint George Regional Airport in Southwestern Utah is seeing rapid growth.

SGU-SEA (already cited as a possibility)
SGU-SFO
SGU-LGU (see below)

A bit of a stretch for a relatively small college town, but it would be interesting to see Logan-Cache Airport in Logan, Utah introduce passenger service again:

LGU-DEN
LGU-SGU (popular spring break destination and winter escape)
LGU-AZA

Provo is about an hour from SLC, but has a significant enough population and distinct demographic which might merit some new routes:

PVU-DEN (previously served)
PVU-SFO (there are a decent number of tech companies in the Utah Valley area, and international and other connections to SFO open a lot of possibilities)

From Helsinki:

AY:
HEL–YYZ
HEL–BOM
HEL–BLR (viable if AY manages to get an Indian partner)
HEL–MAA (the same here)
HEL–KUL
HEL–CGK

CZ:
BJS–HEL (or HO/CA)
CAN–HEL

AA: DFW–HEL or PHL–HEL
EK: DXB–HEL (well, FZ's loads have not been impressive but with the current product, they cannot really compete with QR. The situation would be different with EK)
DY: HEL–JFK (let's see if Norwegian survives and manages to improve their financial situation)

Well, that's probably my current top list. I think those are possible but some of them would be viable in certain circumstances. Of course, the wishlist would continue (e.g. HEL–GRU, HEL–SYD [AY or QF], HEL–JNB), but they're definitely not viable nor going to happen
ATL, AYT, FRA, FUE, HEL, JFK, LCA, LHR, MUC | AY, BA, DL, FH, LH, LO | A320, A321, A333, 752, 764, 772, 788
The word "Quawer" means nothing but it looks great.

PK:
JFK-KHI (maybe with an interline agreement with DL or AA)

UA:
EWR-JNB (a night flight to complement SAA's morning JFK-JNB flight)
SFO-BNE (to compete with QF)

SQ:
ORD-AMS-SIN (a resumption of their old flight)

TK:
DTW-IST (to capture connections to India, Pakistan, and the Middle East)

AA:
ORD-CMN (to connect with Royal Air Maroc)
Pakistan's aviation sector is coming back. It won't be as strong as our eastern neighbor, nowhere close, but it's going to grow over time. Stand by and watch.

Born to Pakistani parents near ORD; raised and based near ORD.

NH NRT/HND-YYZ! It's the prime destination missing from NH's network and will compliment AC's YYZ-HND flight similar to the setup in YVR.

Haha, I don't need flights to Hilongos but international flights to Bohol would be fine. I neither like CEB + boat nor a stopover in MNL. Haven't tried going via Davao.

For a totally unrealistic dream, ARN-TAG on any reasonably OK carrier. Viable? No way.

For a somewhat more realistic approach

HKG-TAG on KA. Viable? Probably not.
ARN-HKG on CX Viable? Probably not (it is said to have been studied).

Re: What routes would you like to see?

From Mauritius in South West Indian Ocean:

•MK MRU-MLE(3× weekly A319)
This will enable tourists to combine both Mauritius and Maldives as touristic destination and South African passengers to Maldives may also transit in MRU

•MK MRU-ICN(2× weekly A330-900)
A route linking Mauritius and South Korea was announced at some point by South Korean media after the Ministry of Transport of South Korea visited Mauritius and a bilateral air agreement was signed (flights should have supposedly started in September 2019), but nothing concrete happened till date. South Korean market would then be further exploited by the Mauritian tourism industry.

•MK MRU-HAH(4× weekly A319)
Comoros has for some years been in the plans of Air Mauritius, which wants to connect the archipelagos to Asia(India, China, Singapore) and Europe(France mainly, Marseille and Paris) and thus consolidate the MRU hub

•MK MRU-MRS(2× weekly A330-900)
France is the largest single-country market for Mauritius (285,000 visitors in 2018) and Paris is the only city to which MRU is connected. Also, Marseille hosts a large Malagasy and Comorian diaspora, thus facilitating travel between the Indian Ocean and south of France.

•MK MRU-MEL/SYD(2× weekly A330-200)
Melbourne hosts a large Mauritian diaspora and Mauritius is a touristic destination which is not sufficiently promoted in Australia, though the potential exists. New direct flights would foster growth and also, following the joint venture between MK and SA, Mauritius may act as a hub for passengers between Australia and South Africa

•UL MRU-CMB(3× weekly A320neo)
The Indian and Chinese markets are huge and prospectful markets for Mauritius and the CMB hub may be used by Indian and Chinese tourists on their way to Mauritius. The latter may also act as a small hub to South Africa for UL passengers

•SU MRU-SVO(2× weekly A330-300)
Russian tourist arrivals to Mauritius ain't high compared to Maldives and the Seychelles due to the lack of flights between the 2 destinations. Mauritian Vice President expressed its willingless to welcome SU in Mauritius at the recent Russia-Africa forum in Sochi, implying that the route has much potential

•AT MRU-CMN(3× weekly B787-800)
The European market remains the biggest one for Mauritius (825,000 passengers in 2018), and CMN offers a variety of connections to European cities, even though this would require a rather long stay in Mauritius (about 12h) for the AT aircraft for short stopovers at CMN on both ways to connect rapidly to Europe

•ET MRU-ADD(5× weekly B737-800)
Mauritius is much of a missing destination in the impressive network of ET in Africa. Greater collaboration between Mauritian authorities and ET may lead to a positive outcome, benefitting Mauritius and ET (such as imposing quotas on different routes where MK operates or convincing ET to develop new tourist markets to Mauritius, such as Israel, Russia and West Africa)

Some other routes include:
MRU-NOS
MRU-CAN
MRU-BKK
MRU-LOS
MRU-WAW

LCY-BMA. No idea why nobody's ever thought of this.

AAL-IBZ, AAR-IBZ or BLL-IBZ.

Strange that a popular holiday destination like IBZ is not served from any airport in this region in Europe. I'm sure it would perform better than many destinations that are served from these airports.

Also
CPH-JNB
CPH-CPT
CPH-SEA
CPH-DEN
CPH-LAS

SAN-AMS/CDG (split operations, if needed)
SAN-ICN
SAN-PTY

SAN-BFL (just to avoid Los Angeles)

That's another good one. I would totally settle for a direct CPH-SAN to avoid LAX.

No way YVR-BKK/SIN/KUL would be profitable, they're way too long of routes. TG and MH couldn't even make LAX work, and it's doubly insulting for TG since Los Angeles has been nicknamed "Thailand's 77th province" (largest Thai community in the U.S.)

Canada is a low-yielding market in general, and doesn't have close ties with Singapore. Maybe because our immigrant population mostly comes from India/China, rather than SE Asian countries. Many overseas Chinese have set up businesses in SE Asia, so there are lots cheap flights between the PRC and BKK/KUL/SIN/CGK/SGN/HAN. Let alone the established non-PRC players like Cathay, EVA, JAL/ANA, Korean...

It is true that there's a large Filipino community in YVR/YYZ/YWG, but most Filipinos in Canada are working-class and as such fall into the price-sensitive VFR camp, rather than business travel demand--the Philippines is an extremely poor country. PR has been able to find a comfortable niche attracting the O&D market, thanks in no small part to the laissez-faire approach by the Filipino government. This is something that Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia could learn from. I can't see Air Canada being interested, either, since they have plenty of Star Alliance partners (CA, BR, NH) that can provide 1-stop services from YVR at bargain basement fares.

And then there's SQ/UA's dumping to SFO and LAX to consider. To be honest, I'm amazed SQ could even make 4x weekly to SEA work on top of the triple daily + 3/week to SFO, and 10x weekly to LAX. I am at a loss as to why it works, too, since I don't know enough about the Puget Sound's economy.

To be honest (and this is getting off-topic), I wonder why there are so many more Filipino immigrants in the U.S. and Canada compared to Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian immigrants. Maybe the strong English proficiency in the Philippines (a legacy of being a U.S. colony) plays a part? Filipino migrants here in Vancouver work like slaves and remit their earnings back home to help their families (one hour of minimum wage work in BC, $13.85, is equivalent to about a day's wages in the Philippines).

Anyway...getting back on topic, I'd like to see

  • YVR to one superhub (DXB, AUH, DOH or IST), restricted to 3 flights per week. Maybe 4/week. at most if connecting demand to India is healthy. I can't see YYC happening. The Fort Mac wildfires in 2016 permanently crippled Alberta's oil production, and U.S. shale plays will keep oil prices low into the distant future.
  • A flight between Seattle and Australia
  • British Airways and KLM returning to Addis. Currently there's no Oneworld connection between North America and Ethiopia). Addis is hot and high so a 787-8 might be dicey. I don't think a 787-9 would be appropriate since it's too premium heavy (LH flies the 343 to Addis, which has no F cabin). I'd also like to see MUC-ADD at some point.
  • More flights from Europe/Asia to Hyderabad. Software exports in Telangana were ₹1 lakh crore in FY2019, about $11 billion US, and most of those exports were destined for the U.S. and Canada. Amazon's largest office anywhere in the world opened in Hyd this August, housing 15,000 engineers. And India's largest Amazon fulfillment center is near the airport. This should be a slam dunk. And yet, BA is the only nonstop carrier from Europe, while there are no flights from Asia outside of ASEAN countries. Not even from Hong Kong!
  • More Europe-Islamabad flights. Islamabad was designed as a planned capital a la Brasilia or Canberra, it's the center of political and military power in Pakistan, and that means the city is well-secured with modern infrastructure. Security has improved by leaps and bounds since the Marriott bombing 11 years ago. And considering how thorough BA's security team is, greenlighting LHR-ISB is a huge seal of approval.
  • More flights between Taiwan and India! Considering how India hates the PRC, I would have thought they'd forge closer ties with Taiwan. But there are only 3 flights between Taiwan and India a week.

I can't see a return to Karachi for many years though. The fighting between political factions isn't as extreme as compared to 2011-15, but the last major terrorist attack in the city wasn't too long ago, the Chinese consulate bombing, which will have been exactly a year ago the Saturday after next. The security holes at KHI are bad. That the Taliban was able to breach KHI security should speak volumes. European airlines won't even entertain the proposal until KHI is locked down, and there can be crew hotels that are as secure as the Serena, PC, Ramada or Marriott in Islamabad (this includes secure escorts from the airport to the hotel). I'm not even sure if insurers are willing to underwrite a Hull All Risk policy for a flight to Karachi. Until then, I think they'd rather leave KHI to the ME4 and TG. Not to mention Pakistan in general is low-yielding.

I'd like to see DL take back the EAS contract for MKG and bring it back to MKG-DTW instead of the current UA (OO) to ORD. ORD is the 9th circle of Hell, and DTW is a blissfully easy and comfortable airport by comparison. Furthermore, with DL having a whole hub operation in SE Michigan and stations all over the state, they're kind of the "home team."
